CVE's not lauching planes?

Post by mikehow3 »

I'm currently playing pbem as the allies in scen17. Its March 1943 and I have a aircombat tf with 5 cve's. It appears after a day of combat that 3 of my 5 cve's are not lauching their aircraft during combat vs a jap carrier tf. Is this normal?

If the CVEs did not have organic plane groups when they arrived in the theater (for example, Long Island) then they can not be used as attack carriers, only as air group ferrys. You can load planes on them and fly the planes off to an airbase but they will not launch an attack.

How about CAP? If I load fighters on a CVE, does it fly CAP?

Never really messed with these silly things, but is it not dependant on who the air wing belongs to as to whether it will fly off CV's? You should try shoving that little F4F-3 group that shows up in Noumea onto Long Island and send it out for some test runs.

Never tested that hunk of junk after it ate my first air group, I only use it for target distraction (as it draws bombs that may have hit a real CV).

I've occasionally transferred squadrons to cve's when I had an excess of vmf & vmb units sitting around. If I only assign 1 unit to a cve the unit will fly but if I assign more than 1, none fly. I think it has to do with max capacity vs unit size, the LI only having 16 doesn't allow for much. I've read where it's capacity was actually 21 so in a future upgrade, matrix might want to change it as this increase in max aircraft may allow for ops to happen. I tend to use the cve's to support actions in the NG area as long as I can get air units on them else I send them back to Pearl.

Check and see if they are over loaded.

It's likely an overloading problem. I noticed that in some cases in 2.30 games the SBD squadrons that come with the CVEs will grow to 18 planes from about 10, which will cause an overloading problem.
