This should prove interesting - IF - you catch his task force. No threat of Netties out of Rabaul?
What was PM's fort level? That was a NASTY bombardment!

RE: Mar 30 to 31: Trinco/ Tarakan lost, PM bombed
PM is a level 3 fort. damage was:
- Port 1, Airfield service 75, Airfield runway 93
- destroyed: 17 P-39s, 5 P-40s, 4 F-4s, 1 Catalina.
- damaged: 76 planes, mostly fighters
- 2 APDs damaged
And I am not too concerned about LBAs, so far, he has kept them at shorter range (I believe 11 or 12 hexes, as I kept using CAP traps [;)]).
I have sent cargo TFs before and they only got spotted once they were very close to PM.
Depending on where the combat takes place, they might or not find them. They are not spotted yet, and detection level is key for naval attacks.
If he does a second bombing (he is still at PM), then my chances of catching him will be good, plus he will fight with even less ammo.

April 1st: KB found
Lets start with some highlights:
- CAP trap over Darwin yielded 9 Betties and 2 Jakes. Bait was xAKL fleet unloading; trick was that the fighters were LRCAP from Katherine instead of Darwin, which is always on recon patrols.
- 1 small TK sunk near Miri
- He is certainly over extended in India. I am not too concerned for the short to medium term. Notice tomorrow he will get Benares, while I will recapture Patna

RE: April 1st: KB found
Nothing worked as planned near Port Moresby, 4 TFs patrolling and nobody found anything... what a bunch of cowards!! [:@]
At least they got intelligence on the search patterns or better to say, the lack of it south of Port Moresby.
I would have stayed longer, but I found the KB or maybe part of it.. you can see it in the map, near Dobo in the Arafura sea.
He will likely hit Darwin tomorrow, or maybe PM again in two turns
Of course everybody is now running away

April 4th: Bataan fell
I have been busy and not able to update this AAR. So what is new?
- The PI campaign ended with the capture of Bataan. This was of course expected as it is already April 4th and the besieged troops run out of supply days ago. A total of 32,194 troops, 318 guns and 93 vehicles were lost.
This means that the following Japanese troops are free to be redeployed, likely to Java as there is unfinished business there too [;)]
2nd Tank Regiment
21st Ind Engineer Regiment
65th Brigade
4th Division
4th Tank Regiment
7th Tank Regiment
15th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion
14th Army
2nd Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion
This plus 12 to 24 Sonias and around 30 Sallies
- Also lost was Kukong in China, no supplies an 10,000 casualties, 3 units destroyed 6 withdrawing... but nowhere to withdraw to, so they will be used as partisans (cut supply paths)
- In Australia/ New Guinea, the attempt to withdraw the AKL convoys ended badly, with 9 AKLs and 1 AM sunk; another 3 severely damaged/ useless.
A sad loss, but I am not losing sleep; these were all slow, small ships; and I will be getting plenty of cargo vessels in the long term.
The fleet withdrew without any incident and it is now repairing at Brisbane/ Sydney.
- Port Moresby is a ruin; I have around 50 damaged planes, every turn I get 4 to 6 repaired; and they get rebased to mainland AUS. Once all planes are moved out I will try to evacuate an air HQ with APDs
- Colombo is not damaged; but the airforce is also moving out; pressure is too intense with daily sweeps from Trincomalee
- India:

April 7th: Horn island assaulted
Turns have been slow lately, up until now... on April 7th,I had the first post amphibious bonus invasion! Horn Island was attacked, so far unsuccessfully.
But first some other updates:
- Java: I am still holding Bandoeng, Batavia and Soerabaja.
Bandoeng is being bombed (air) and bombarded (land) daily. Supplies run out, but I am using the entire Dutch air force, based at Soerabaja, to do air supply. The air force was disbanded 2 months ago, but it just start to come back in the last turns. Perfect timing... I have another plan for it, but later on; only after it is all ready.
- Luzon: he is still cleaning mines at Bataan; I give it maybe a week before I see the Luzon forces in Java.
A Dutch submarine sunk one xAK close to Iba; I hope it delays a bit the transfer of troops
- India: 2 days of air battles over the skies of Raipur. Around 20 Oscars (around ten "a" and ten "c") and 10 Hurricanes had been shot down. I will come back later for the status on India.
- China: Starving to death.. this is another one I will bring back later on; I need to ask some advice.
- Ceylon: nothing yet. Battle for Colombo should start in some turns
- Port Moresby: I am slow and painfully moving out the airforce from that crater. 45 damaged planes need to get out [:(]
- Aleutians: building up slowly, nothing to report other than a lurking submarine at Amchitka that requires some DC love
- Pacific: All quiet; convoys completely undisturbed [:)] . I have started to fortify New Caledonia; one UCSMC regiment should arrive in the next few days.
Also important to mention: last turn my carrier based dive bomber hit a submarine close to PH... this is both good and wrong; as he now knows that my carriers are no longer in the SW Pacific
Going back to Horn Island:
- This started with a late invasion (after the air transport pulse). Results were certainly good for the Allies: CL Kashii got 5 hits, xAKL Taganoura got 3 hits, both ended on fire. xAP Miike maru was not hit .
Hitting the xAKL was great news, as it was likely filled with supplies that didn't unload due to fires. His shock attack (Horn is an atoll) was out of supply [:D]

Should I do a shock attack? the enemy must be super disrupted, and worst case Horn is already doomed. Maybe go deliberate?
I think next turn he will do naval bombing,

RE: April 7th: Horn island assaulted
This is the situation on Horns:
Tomorrow I will attack; lets see how it goes, I have a chance to kill some disrupted troops. But more likely they will get a heavy bombardment tomorrow
Interesting to see xAP Miike maru on the invasion; after the end of the bonus, it is no longer wise to use xAPs/ xAKs on assaults

Did he come in from the east or west to land at Horn Island?
Looks like he's working to make life in Port Moresby difficult. You've got a fairly historical situation in SWPAC right now - this should be interesting to see how he tries to take Moresby!

He came from the west (Java). he is also doing recon on Derby and Brome, I won't be surprised if he lands in Northern Oz soon. KB was spotted some turns ago in Timor/ Arafura sea. I bet it is still there doing distant cover.
and yes, he is slowly killing PM, like a boa constrictor. He has landed significant forces in Buna, and the landing bonus is over, so he won't be doing a direct amphibious assault.
That said, he had done 2 very succesful naval bombarment, the last specially devasting, I bet he will do it again once he is ready to attack.
PM damage, after more than a week, is still very heavy: Port 4, Airfield service 81, Airfield runway 66
46 damaged aircraft are still there, mostly P-40s/ P-39s. They are subject to daily airfield bombing (so far toothless). I get between 3 and 5 planes fixed every day, these are then rebased to continental Oz.
I still have 2 damaged F-4 Lightning on PM.. I really hope I can salvage them; the recon unit was the most valuable unit hit. 5 planes lost [:(] and I am now blind
Supply is decent at 25,000 and fort level 3. Troops are so-so: mix of CMFs, AIFs, ANZ Cdo, Papuan... they will fight decently, but will be overrun eventually by overwhelming forces.
I just started building Cooktown (only after the end of the bonus), it will take some time to build to a decent level. It is at fort L2 and airfield L1
Cairns on the other hand is well developed: fort at L4, airfield at L5 and building. Same can be said about Townsville and Charter Towers. I am very confident that any attempt to assault NE Oz will be repelled.

More on recon planes:
- In 8 days I will get USAAF airgroup 9th PS , with 4 F-4s... I think I will disband them to put these 4 planes on the pool; then I will need to be careful with them. I won't have replacements until October [:(] [&:]
- I have one Marine recon group (VMD-2), the problem is I just got it recently and the pilots are still green. Another, bigger problem: they are flying Buffalos F2A-2P, which looks great, however there are no replacements, I will have to change them to short ranged Wildcat [&:][:(]
So looks like other than short ranged planes (Dragon Rapides [:@]) and "one" recon squadron, I will be blind until October [8|] !!

RE: April 7th: Horn island assaulted
Don't you get some recon Beaufighters or Beauforts, and recon Liberators?
If you saved any of the Dutch patrol squadrons, they can update to Catalinas. Even if they don't, the German made Dornier patrol plane is pretty good.

I have 3 British recon squadrons:
- one, yes just one Buffalo, to be withdrawn in 2 months
- 5 Mitchells and 5 Hurricanes PR; these 2 squadrons recently arrived. They will remain in India, as the situation there is also critical.
In India I am also training Lysanders and Fulmars to do recon.
I will get recon Liberators in December (and F-5s in October)... but being in April.. this feels like centuries!
Beufighters/ Beuforts... I don't see them as camera capable...
The Dutch: I just got them back!, but I don't know what to do with the patrol planes. So far they are busy doing supply runs to Bandoeng, afterwards maybe naval strikes. I am simply running out of Dutch bases!
This is my typical Dutch squadron... I cannot change HQs.. I know I could change an australian base to "ABDA" but the cost is very high.. and of course the planes won't be allowed to leave this base afterwards. If I pick Darwin, and he decides to invade there, the planes will be lost

RE: April 7th: Horn island assaulted
Apologies! I was remembering an unrestricted Cat squadron in the DEI, but it turned out to be Australian - No. 11 Sqn, that (I think) appeared at Koepang.
The Beaufort PR squadron is a Det. of No. 100 Sqn RAF, and it showed up (I think) in Aden.
There is a Buffalo PR sqn. - VMD 2, flying the F2A-2P. I have mine at San Diego but I am not sure if that is the arrival base.
My game (stock) is in May 42.

Yes, VMD 2 arrived recently; problem is F2A-2P are not in production, so no replacements other than moving them to much shorter legged Wildcats
And of course, this being the 1st Marine recon squadron, there is no trained pool of pilots. So they will remain in the west coast until they are at least is their 50s recon skill.
for the Dutch squadrons:
- patrols will keep moving supply,
- 2E engine bombers are resting/ getting ready for a nice bombing run. As soon as all are fixed, I plan to do a surprise visit to Palembang

April 8th: Horn island lost
As predicted, the Japanese went heavy on Horn Island. It was not only naval bombarded, but also landed a division... Yes, a full division [X(] assaulting and shock attacking it (it is an atoll)... a bit overkill? [&:]
I think he got it very cheaply: He certainly lost 1 xAKL (Taganoura Maru) and the coastal guns also damaged CL Kashii and xAP Koan Maru
The naval bombardment by BB Fuso, CA Mioko and CL Nagara was very accurate, thus by the time of the shock assault, the 21 ID had no problem killing the garrison.
Then my bombers hit the beaches with minimal impact. Again as predicted, they found the KB; but I was lucky they didn't catch the bombers:
Notice the CAP found:
Akagi-1
Kaga-1
Shokaku-1
Ryujo-1
Which leaves Zuikaku, Soryu, Hiryu, as potential KB-2
and Hosho, Shoho, Zuiho as mini-KB
Mini-KB was in the Java sea some turns ago. Likely close to KB-1
I have no idea where KB-2 is
What else... I shot down 2 Jakes at Cooktown. And I was "visited" by a float plane at Brisbane... will he try something there? I have now everybody on alert; it would be great news if he decides to attack NE Australia, as I am well prepared there.

RE: April 8th: Horn island lost
I am surprised he was able to put almost 13K troops in one day... I guess he used a lot of ships? I cannot say by only looking at the coastal gun actions. I can see troops lost on the "21 Div/ 9" which means there were at least 9 ships carrying it

The Dutch: I just got them back!, but I don't know what to do with the patrol planes.
If you get a small Dutch unit to one of the islands west of India those bases can be switched cheaply and the patrol planes will help a lot vs. subs there. I'd also look at the dot base of Coff's Harbour in Australia, though it will probably be an expensive 100+ base.
I should mention I am assuming you can switch to ABDA command and planes can then fly in. You might have to switch to a restricted Dutch command in that case the unit would need to switch HQs first before you switch the base.

Thanks!
I don't know if it is the scenario I am playing, but ABDA is greyed out for Addu

Besides he is already at Ceylon, thus even if I could rebased them to the western Indian islands, there would be a lot of Japanese "friendly visits" as soon as he figures out there are planes doing search there
And of course there is no need to patrol that area until I manage to kick him out of Ceylon; hopefully by early 1943
