I don't know what they were -- whatever the defaults were. I tend to be less than diligent checking on that for surface forces. Subs, I purge regularly, but not the capital ships.

The BBs base experience were low to mid 60s. Scratch that - high 50s. They gained more in death, apparently. I was hoping Tracker would still have it, but I guess not.

I'm not sure how many subs I have in the area. Any in the Marshalls or Gilberts would have a hard time chasing them down. I know I have one by Truk. I'll have to check.

All his destroyers are definitely dead.

His ships were shown as heading west, so I'm sure he's thinking about a possible sub threat.

He did have remarkably few escorts for his carriers. Three DDs, one CA and the two fast BB/CCs. The DDs are dead. The CA is most likely dead and one BB is in bad shape. Doesn't leave much, does it. He probably threw this TF together on the fly to catch me. It makes me realize I should have rolled over him more than I did. Akagi and Kaga were landing hits with their 8" guns as it was.

Mundy, that was quite a show! [X(] My naive take on the strategy is that you would never have a better chance for a surface engagement against his CVs, so it made sense to try it. If your gun crews had been just a bit better it would have made a huge difference, I think. In any case you shot up some real fireworks for us armchair admirals. Wow!

He pretty much told me as much. The reason there were no AM airstrikes was that he was dealing with fires yet. They must have been put out by the PM segment. If only...

29 October 1942

I've managed to round up 5 subs to put at or enroute to Truk. We'll see...

I'm going to pull the trigger on Tarawa and the surrounding islands. My troops are in the 90-95 range, prep-wise. Even if KB is dockside repairing, it'll take three days to get them going. I'm going to round up some of the returning APs/AKs first, so I have enough lift. This will be no whizzy battalion level landing, as I'll have the better part of three divisions worth of troops doing this.

Another CVE arrived at Pearl, so with three fleet carriers and 4-5 CVEs, I should have plenty of air. 3 jeep carriers will be fighter dedicated, while the other two have strike planes.

In India, I'm sending a bunch of combat forces to Nagpur and Jubbulpore. I'm going to advance on Raipur from the NW and the NE, so some coordination will be required. I'll have a credible force approaching from Nagpur, while the hammer hits from the east. I'll be relocating my longer range bombers at Delhi. Two squadrons of A-20, and Vengences can run from Nagpur, plus whatever else I can pack in.

In China, I've noticed I have a 4-1 advantage at Hankow, so they'll shock attack next turn. The whole China theatre has devolved into about half a dozen massive sieges, which won't break anytime soon.

Quiet start to the next month.

I'm moving slowly with regard to the Gilberts. KB seems to be taking it's sweet time withdrawing from the area. They're sitting at Jaluit right now. I have a S boat a day away, so they'll be receiving a visit.

I've upgraded my P-38F unit at Cairns to the G model. The G has the range to reach Katherine from Normanton, so his fighters will eventually receive a visit. I only had 20 when I flipped them, but by the time they get fixed up, I may be at full strength. I'll have more Fs in the pool to help the two India squadrons out.

I've had more Chinese Corps respawning at Chungking, pushing them to over 5,000 AV now.

My fifth CVE arrived at Pearl. 5 CVEs and 3 fleet carriers. Another CVE is due in about a month or so. I think a British CV is due before too long. I'm not sure whether to keep her with the Indian fleet or have her help with the USN carriers. I'm favoring the latter right now.

I have two VMFs at Cape Town, shipping out to Karachi. They're first on the list for F4U-1s when they arrive. Three fully stocked heavy USAAF bomber squadrons arrived in Karachi yesterday. They'll be off to Delhi with the others I've stashed there. When I start my offensive, I'll begin with a bombing campaign in the north -- hopefully as a distraction.

The 3rd Australian Division is a day away from Normanton. I'll be kicking off that offensive soon, too, to Katherine. Make him worry about Darwin. The airbase situation up there pretty much sucks.

I think the majority of the KB won't need serious repairs (don't assume they are going to be in dockside repair move) so if they are stationed at Truk and you invade the Gilberts, this is not going to end well. You're not at a point where you can force an invasion under the nose of the KB. If you want to succeed in a Gilbert Islands invasion you're going to need to draw the KB elsewhere. Not to mention that the Japanese have Baker Island still meaning they will see any forces heading toward the Gilberts days before they arrive. My advice is to hold off of the Gilberts and focus on retaking Baker first while increasing the pressure on the Empire from other directions in the meantime. This is a long war and you are ill-served by rushing invasions just because you have the LCUs prepped and ready.

I'm guessing you don't have troops in Tennant Creek yet then? If so I'm guessing you're unaware how many supply problems you will have in approaching Katherine through the deserts of Northern OZ. And of course they prime targets for IJA bombers. I believe an approach on Katherine can work but only in conjunction with offensive moves on Darwin from the sea as well so the Japanese are forced to having to deal with both of that at once. Perhaps other players can explain what happens when you try to approach Kahterine from the south alone...it never ends well.

KB is on the move. They're 6 hexes due west of Baker Is, heading SW. I don't know if they're going to take a shot at Canton or not. No shipping is anywhere in the area, so that's good. If he decides to moved towards Suva/Pago Pago, I'll have to be alert. They're within PBY range from Canton.

Likewise, his old battleships are prowling the seas about 4 hexes south of the Indian coast. I'm not sure what their intentions are. If they were bombarding, it would have happened already. A single B-26 made a run at Yamashiro, to no effect. My bombers in India are pretty much ground oriented, so I don't see a lot happening there.

I've moved a bunch of heavy USAAF squadrons to Delhi from Bombay and Karachi. There should be well over a dozen squadrons there now. I can pretty much do what I want in the north, it seems. I'll probably be able to nail Raipur good when the time comes. The mob from Jubbulpore is on the way there to approach Raipur from the East. I'll time the Nagpur bunch to get there at the same time. Lighter bombers from Nagpur will help out with escorts. He seems to have fighters based at Raipur.

I'm getting my troops moving against Raipur.  Delhi has 19 heavy USAAF squadrons.  I'll plaster Raipur's airfield first, and then move on to the troops when the time comes.
 
Two VMFs arrive at Karachi.  My first F4U candidates come the end of January.
 
I have a UK base force enroute to Karachi.  I'll leave them there when they arrive.  Karachi is short on air support, affecting the repair rate.  I've been trying to get squadrons there sent out to Bombay or other more open bases.
 
Within the next two months, I'll have another 3 CVEs in theatre.  8 of them plus the three fleet carriers can make them fairly formidable, at least on the fighter side.  I'll probably leave two of them with strike planes.  I've been beaching one of the VFR/VBRs at Pearl when they arrive to allow flight ops.  When the next RN carrier arrives, I've decided to send them to Pearl via Panama.
 
My first Cleveland class CL arrived about a week ago, enroute to Pearl from Panama.
 
CF's out on a work trip again, so nothing until Friday/Saturday.
