US sub torps

Post by Oleg Mastruko »

Do US sub Mark 14 torps on "named" submarines improve over time, and if so - when?

I know these torpedos are pretty much useless early on, but do they remain useless throughout the campaign or do they improve?

Watching the AARs on this forum I have seen some impressive attacks made by named subs...

Historically they fixed the problems in September of 1943. By that point I would imagine that the Japanese player wouldn’t be sending his ships out all that often to be targets so it probably doesn’t matter much anyway.

The short supply of the Mk-14 also caused big problems as well.
U.S. enterted the war with inadequate supply of torpedoes and too few facilities to produce torpedoes required. By the end of November, 1942, Pearl Harbor's supply of MK-14 torpedoes dwindled down to zero.
Submariners were ordered to fire the absolute minimum of torpedoes to achieve their sinkings, since they could not rely on a steady supply. Also, Mk-10 and Mk-15 were, frequently and sometimes, respectively, used in boats. Even the Mk-9 former battleship torpedo was utilized in the S-boats.

Based on what I've seen in books and past postings, the hit rate on the Mark 14 on non S-Class boats started in mid 1942 at about 10-20 percent.

This slowly improved over the course of the war to be about 40-50 by the end of 1942 and finally up to about 85 percent by September of 1943.

Mark 10 torpedos used on S-Boats and Japanese torpedos are also about 80-90 percent.

*Bump*

Thanks for the info, but no one said as to how is this simulated in UV? Ie. do the US Mk14 torps improve over time, and if so - when?

My personal experience -- American torpedos DO get better in the game at the rate that I mentioned in my first reply.
