You've done an excellent job in preserving key assets, while whittling away at his - I'm not surprised he didn't jump in to challenge you, because anything you lost could be replaced, which is not so on his side of the house.

Yes, that's true. He has jumped before and won a recent battle, but he's also lost a few cruisers earlier down here, so I'm sure he felt enough of a tithe was taken from the Allies for this one.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Our subs scooted past Rabaul without a contact, which was the first indication we might get a reprieve this turn. Another two midgets are sunk at Buin, this time with BB Maryland getting in some of the final shots on the surface against one of them. [:D]

The RO-60 was also sunk by sub chasers near Majuro. Life as a submariner has gotten pretty hazardous on both sides lately!

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENT PAC: [/font] Wotje is in Allied hands! I didn't think it would fall the first day, but the forts are low at level 2 and the combination of tanks, engineers and arty seems like the right mix. The Pennsylvania was a bit beat up by the CD guns here and has 25 system damage and 21 fires still burning. I've slowed the TF to cruise and sent them back to Mili where I can disband the ship safely if needed. She's been a stalwart, involved in 4-5 invasion in the past few months. Luckily the two Oklahoma class are nearly ready at Pearl, because this makes three BBs that need significant work now.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SO PAC: [/font] The Buin invasion lands easily and should retire back to safety tomorrow. The Japanese don't risk it against the fast BBs. We have a full US Army division here against a naval guard and a garrison unit. It should be plenty.

If I remember right, the AF can go to size 5 which would allow B-24s to hit Kusaie and Ponape with full bomb loads.

Good point. I wasn't noticing yet that Ponape was in range from there. I knew I could hit Kusaie from Nauru, which is nearing level 5.

But wait, after just checking I think Nauru is also closer to Ponape, at 15 hexes. So I might use that at least first as it's more developed and relatively safe. Ailinglalap would still be useful though. Never hurts to have another good airbase, and to be honest I don't have enough bases currently for all of the base forces pumping out of Port Huneume, so I should plop a few there and go for it!

Some of the dots I'll be taking soon aren't necessary, but they're areas where I can put units! Crazy, but it makes more sense than leaving them sitting in Pago Pago. At least they can function as search bases or staging areas. Beru has been really useful like that, now with a size 2 port and size 3 field, it functions as a secondary base to hold units prepping for invasions to the North along with Tabiteuaea.

Yeah, it's getting fun. Playing Japan early you get some of that, but it's mainly just major stress as there is so much you know you have to do in a short period.

This part does feel tense when I screw up (!) but usually a bit more relaxed, at least since I know I'm ahead of my own schedule, and therefore can pick timing and spots according to what's going on. I'm not trying to go as fast as possible since I know I'm a rookie at all of this.

Wotje wasn't supposed to happen for a month, so now I'm looking ahead even further. Buin is a week or two late, but everything is ready for nearby bases and once things are patched up I should be able to go again and make up that time. Also, Torokina can be reached without a landing, which makes that very low pressure.

In the meantime, if he wants to battle it out he has to bring the supply, the fuel and the stuff into the area through my increasingly proficient sub to do it. [:)]

I'm wary of this. I imagine he'll want to bring it in to good effect. I have to be careful with any moves I make and keep my search extended at key moments to see into the deep dark areas of the Japanese Empire. I'm sending some LR Wildcat units to hop on CVs and have a look at some things I can't see usually. Should be fun. Hopefully it'll give him a little scare! [:)]

Things have slowed a bit here. We sent the current turn to michaelm to fix the blue line and in less than a day he sent it back fixed! Amazing to get the support he's still able to give. [&o]

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIA: [/font] Starting to head for Addu. I'll sweep for mines and bombard a bit first.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENT PAC: [/font] Still working on Maleolap daily. Getting a few squads disabled and destroyed each day. The infantry here is being very slow to fix disabled squads, but I may decide to go soon anyway. He has to be low on supply. Looking forward to finishing the Marshalls to be able to use the air groups here now in the SW/So Pac areas.

A Marine Raider unit takes Ailuk near Wotje. Rongelap will also be taken tomorrow if there is no interdiction of the LCI TF heading there. Rongelap will be made into a search base for PBYs.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SW/SO PAC: [/font] Torokina is hit enough to ensure it's continued closure in spite of bad weather. I won't let this base reopen now. Our division at Buin tried a DA after three TFs hit the base, but couldn't pull out a 1:1. A few arty units will be added to keep the pressure up, and soon a Marine regiment will be landed here to speed things up.

Two Marine regiments are now walking to Fincshafen. A number of units have made it to Lae in barges and landing craft. So far so good over here.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] The IJA suffers another two defeats at 76, 46 and 76, 47. I'll keep the troops here for one more at 76, 46 before trying to switch things out. Two of the units have level 2 forts, and that is something I'd like to keep using even though they're both wearing out and nearly out of supply. At 76, 47 there is no choice of tactics. It's just hold out as long as possible with no supply.

Two divisions have moved into Wenchow and are bombarding in addition to the base being hit from the sky and by sea. He'll most likely work it out of supply before even trying an attack.

Not sure how that happened without it heading back to replenish, but I noticed I still own Buuanga and it had 400 fuel in base. I limped the sub over there and it was able to fuel up and should make it back to Perth! [:)][/font]

Yep, it's one of the big 18-knot (or are they 16-knot?) ones. 2 hits with fuel onboard and she's a goner, IMO. Barring a miracle.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENT PAC: [/font] Rongalap is taken. I'll start concentrating on wiping out the last remaining functional airfield for the Japanese at Kweijalein. They have some search (maybe Rufes) there, but it's just a size 1.

When it's 3-2 in the 4th inning, and you have a guy on 2nd with no outs, it usually pays to think small. Move the runner. Set up a squeeze with one out and get that run where you can to keep the pressure on, knowing there is plenty of time for the big RBI double in the late innings. Sometimes it just all falls apart though; your runner starts late, the batter drops a slow bunt right in front of the catcher on the 3rd base line, your runner slides to try to break it up and tweaks his ankle. Out of the inning.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SW PAC: [/font] Nick decided finally to go for the multitudes of landing craft and xAKLs plying between Milne Bay and Lae. He managed to sink three TFs, all carrying parts of a NZ brigade. About a third of it is swimming now. His cruisers stayed put one hex from Buna but I stupidly didn't have my DB/TB turned on! [:@]

I tried an intercept with three CA five DD during the night with no success, just sinking his barges (dropping supplies somewhere probably), and my TB found the ships but struck out too. Luckily there wassn't much else to hit. While this is unfortunate, and there is potential for some losses in this kind of "smallball" strategy, I'm sticking to it. I've already moved three regiments, two engineer units, two base forces and a tank regiment plus a few smaller units all through the same area without attracting any attention. If I lose stuff here occasionally, the odds are still good and I won't go down swinging as often as if I risk big noticable TFs he has to respond to.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Two more xAK hit.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIA: [/font] Nick nails the Dimpapur fields to continue his good turn. I'd been intentionally leaving them unCAPed thikning the five AA units here would make any strike pretty painful. They didn't do enough, unfortunately, and 9 4E are lost for about 7-10 2E bombers. I'll move it all back and get CAP in once the P-47s arrive to anchor the high level.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] Another failed attack at 76, 46 for the IJA. There are a lot of Chinese squads disabled now though, so I have o watch it. I've got the big supplied Corps in next turn and that should make things solid for a while so I can flip another few units. It all depends on how much fatigue and disruption he's getting on the other side, and how often he can strike, which I can't predict.

About 15 subs ring Truk on triangular patrols. They've been seeing a lot of movement through the area in the past week, and have scored a number of hits. All new subs will head to this area. There is a lot of open water away from the Kates in this area and subs are being led in by Cats from Lae and Coronados from Ontong Java on the close approaches to Rabaul. Always a good start to the replay! [:)]
