There are other things in life than money. [:'(] Go with what you 'enjoy', anyone can be a web designer and not be happy doin it. But, most everyone enjoys creating something especially a great game like Civilization II or Battles of Napoleon. Gary Grigsby can tell you the wonderful feeling of accomplishment after creating one of his games. He'll be long remembered I doubt you'll hear much about a web designers life. [:D]

Actually, my job is rather about software development than 'web design'.

I've worked on other people's websites enough to realize, I'd loathe being a "off-the shelf" web-designer . . . Now, working for a quirky, unusual firm for whom their website is a bit of farce or at least fun (here I'm thinking of something like The Onion) that I could conceivably enjoy. But that is so niche. Seems the development path for a typical web-developer today is to "do your time as a flunky" and maybe get a job you love eventually.

That said, I've been working on my first little game in HTML! [:'(] I'll post it up here when I get a prototype running.

IMO one with passion for games should rather focus to build game, not engine.
At least not before have medium sized studio at minimum.
Starting your own engine would mean huge amount of work and programmers.
There are plenty of commeriacly available engines out there to save you that trouble.
Still have your dream, I admire that!
Step by step...

Y'know, there are games that were started from scratch and all made by (mostly) 1 person alone. Not just small games under 1 megabyte, but also some really impressive ones. Though Starshatter: The Gathering Storm took few years of work...
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Certainly there are many such one man own engine games.
Was referring more to “dream engines” that will render miracles, etc.
These could be quite time consuming

Oh My God, that sounds horrific

. . . I don't want to jinx myself, so I think I'm gonna shut up until I have something playable. [:D]
