Amphibious

Post by Bipman »

I was PBEM with the 'Test Of Wills' scenario but could not get my Russian amphibious vehicles to cross the water as per the circled item in the attached picture. I tried elsewhere too and the same thing happened. Any ideas ?

My understanding and I may be wrong, but you can't cross large bodies of water such as large rivers without a bridge. Especially that large river that is on the map.

1. You can't directly (using a single order) cross a water hex. Only a water hexside
2. To cross a water hex, here's how:
a. Build a bridge on the near side
b. After the bridge is built, plot a move order (single waypoint to anywhere). Then move the waypoint to the far side of the newly laid bridge. You can't plot this directly. The game engine will declare that move as illegal.
c. Once the unit is "in the water", either plot a move to the far side, to use auto-bridging or amphib movement, or laid another bridge section.

Caveats:
1. This takes a loooong time.
2. The game engine will plot movement path to use the least amount of time to accomplish moves between waypoints. This can complicate matters in this type of move if there are any intact bridges across the river.

Jeff made a very clear example of this issue.

We have this noted as an issue. Not sure if we will be able to address for 2.09, but definitely a 2.1 fix.
