I may be a minority in this, but I also think the disparity in accumulated pilot exp/skill increase for a turn like this is a kind of latent VP generator. It only requires more good airframes and more time to become actual VPs.

I had gotten the fields opened and moved in on Hellcat group, but the rest were LR CAP and suffered, but the CR is deceptive. During the replay I noticed a good number of Georges shot up and and in the info screen 11 are shown destroyed, so slightly better. The Wildcats take the brunt of it all but on the day only 10 pilots are lost. None of the good quality plane groups lost pilots.
A bit disappointed with the Allied CPS-1 radar here. Only 12 minutes warning time. I'm moving two more in.

Pilot losses remain low and the WIA guys seem to be coming back okay without being reduced too much in exp. I see some arriving back in the 60s-70s. Still can't get anyone over 14 kills yet.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SO PAC: [/font] Since the fields at Torokina have been down I extended my naval strike DBs to that range with all kinds of LR CAP and escorts set to fly over Torokina daily and there had been daily bombing runs to keep damage on the fields. I set the escorts back to Buin during the unloading of troops and Nick's strike, then forgot to set them back to one hex farther out. He moved to Torokina with half the IJN and apparently that base is open now, because 200 fighters flew CAP over it! [X(]
Three Marine DB groups and an Aussie TB Beaufort group went for them boldy alone. Not a great plan. About 60 planes lost on the day. That evens out the score, stupidly, and for absolutely no gain. I have three more DB groups in the Solomons, so strike ability is still strong, but instead of going for the ships at Torokina I decided to gamble a bit. I decided to hit Rabaul!

Unfortunately this is what opened the raid on Rabaul. If the sweeps from Buin and Shortlands had come in first maybe it would have been a different story.

A Lightning sweep and the Hellcat LR CAP took most of the CAP away for the second big package, but they still got to the bombers.

On the day it wasn't a disaster as the heavies did get to the base and did get to a lot of parked planes. It's not great to lose 25 B-17s though, and this will sideline those groups for a week as some upgrade to B-24D-1 and others take the resulting replacements.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SO PAC: [/font]The reasoning for a Rabaul strike was that if Nick followed his usual MO he would have stayed at Torokina for a bit, brought some more mines in and kept the fleets there. I thought this was a good chance to test the defenses and give a scare, and possibly more.
I set the 4Es knowing it could be a debacle, but got a kind of hallway success. I almost commited a naval strike, and now I know that if I can do this again I would send them and most likely could wear the CAP sufficiently to get some hits. The AA at Rabaul is not strong for some reason.

On the losses info screen it shows 5 B5N1 destroyed on the ground, and if I remember correctly there were 2 Judys destroyed as well.
At Kwejalein the DL is high from troops already on the ground plus recon and bombing daily. So it was lit up like Christmas.
I'm now working on Roi-Namur in the same way, with about 60-70 bombers a day hitting troops, and there are 20-25 infantry squads disabled per day. I might land at half prep with an ind regiment and some tanks and use the division I had at 100% to start prepping for elsewhere.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIA: [/font] Cox's Bazaar gets needed supply and gets a level 2 field up and running. I'll keep building and resupplying for a few weeks before moving on Akyab. Looks like he has about 10k troops at akyab and another 20k across the river on the Burma side.
[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENT PAC: [/font] Things have quieted down here. No action right now. I sent a big supply and reinforcement mission to Taongi, which I want to build an airfield on for CAP over Wake. Search is already operating here and should shut down any resupply missions there.
[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SO PAC: [/font]After the recent fireworks I decided to rest and try something new. I set a number of groups to various types of night strikes aimed at Rabaul. With Kiriwina and Buin I've got two bases within 6-7 hexes and I set some DBs and TBs on naval strike, some Venturas to hit the fields and mine, and Marauders to hit the port. Most strikes did something, but no serious damage. Just pinpricks.
Still, this is promising, and if something can be achieved during 'down time' that will help once a major push goes forward. I've now also moved Beauforts into Lae set to strike at 8 hexes with gorps at night. They can search, as can the Avengers, and I've got about 30 FP also searching in that direction, so hopefully one day a bunch will fly.
I've tried sweeping with my Havoc NF but with no luck. I tried using them on a LR CAP and they didn't show up either. Any ideas? I want to get to the FP he's using to CAP the base.
One of my favorite items from these turns was finding a great use for the Boomerangs! They sortied twice against barges near Finschafen and took out everything! Very fun. They pack a punch too with two 500lb bombs, so could be used against other harder targets as a low level option.
[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] Two small shocks close hex sides around some troops being pushed by the IJA. I fear a good number will not make it out and a lot of zombies will clog up Chungking soon. That base is doing well now, increasing supply by about 300-400 a day via the air bridge. All planes are repaired in the CAP and I'm just waiting for supply to get up to drop tank levels to remove the P-40K and bring in more P-47s. Troops are recovering from the battles nearby with the increased supply as well. The AV has popped up about 100 points in the past week. Still another 400-500 to repair. The goal is to get enough supply to upgrade to 43 squads and fill out some arty. I have more Indian mountain and jungle gun units to fly in too, plus some AT guns I need to upgrade to the 6 pounder.
Lotsof units are now making it to Kashgar. It's at about 25k of a 60k SL now. I'll try to get the base up to full supply so in the future units even a hex out can take supply. it's a long road but better than giving him the VPs for these units, and if they can build for later, even better. I plan to build up some of the base forces and build an air supply line from Kashgar through Urumchi and all of he way back so that when they do move to fight again they don't lose their mojo on the way.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]OZ:[/font] Units are moving to within 3-4 hexes of Carnarvon now. This is the tricky part. I'll send CD guns ahead with AA units to man the coastal hexes. He can bombard for 12 days here as we move forward during the last stretch so I've goto to either go through the desert slowly or go along the vulnerable coastal road. I'm choosing the later but knowing I will do everything short of bringing surface forces to interdict any response. It'll be air coverage from LR, CD guns and hopefully a solid sub screen.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIA: [/font] Cox's Bazaar gets needed supply and gets a level 2 field up and running. I'll keep building and resupplying for a few weeks before moving on Akyab. Looks like he has about 10k troops at akyab and another 20k across the river on the Burma side.
[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENT PAC: [/font] Things have quieted down here. No action right now. I sent a big supply and reinforcement mission to Taongi, which I want to build an airfield on for CAP over Wake. Search is already operating here and should shut down any resupply missions there.
[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SO PAC: [/font]After the recent fireworks I decided to rest and try something new. I set a number of groups to various types of night strikes aimed at Rabaul. With Kiriwina and Buin I've got two bases within 6-7 hexes and I set some DBs and TBs on naval strike, some Venturas to hit the fields and mine, and Marauders to hit the port. Most strikes did something, but no serious damage. Just pinpricks.
Still, this is promising, and if something can be achieved during 'down time' that will help once a major push goes forward. I've now also moved Beauforts into Lae set to strike at 8 hexes with gorps at night. They can search, as can the Avengers, and I've got about 30 FP also searching in that direction, so hopefully one day a bunch will fly.
I've tried sweeping with my Havoc NF but with no luck. I tried using them on a LR CAP and they didn't show up either. Any ideas? I want to get to the FP he's using to CAP the base.
One of my favorite items from these turns was finding a great use for the Boomerangs! They sortied twice against barges near Finschafen and took out everything! Very fun. They pack a punch too with two 500lb bombs, so could be used against other harder targets as a low level option.
[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] Two small shocks close hex sides around some troops being pushed by the IJA. I fear a good number will not make it out and a lot of zombies will clog up Chungking soon. That base is doing well now, increasing supply by about 300-400 a day via the air bridge. All planes are repaired in the CAP and I'm just waiting for supply to get up to drop tank levels to remove the P-40K and bring in more P-47s. Troops are recovering from the battles nearby with the increased supply as well. The AV has popped up about 100 points in the past week. Still another 400-500 to repair. The goal is to get enough supply to upgrade to 43 squads and fill out some arty. I have more Indian mountain and jungle gun units to fly in too, plus some AT guns I need to upgrade to the 6 pounder.
Lotsof units are now making it to Kashgar. It's at about 25k of a 60k SL now. I'll try to get the base up to full supply so in the future units even a hex out can take supply. it's a long road but better than giving him the VPs for these units, and if they can build for later, even better. I plan to build up some of the base forces and build an air supply line from Kashgar through Urumchi and all of he way back so that when they do move to fight again they don't lose their mojo on the way.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]OZ:[/font] Units are moving to within 3-4 hexes of Carnarvon now. This is the tricky part. I'll send CD guns ahead with AA units to man the coastal hexes. He can bombard for 12 days here as we move forward during the last stretch so I've goto to either go through the desert slowly or go along the vulnerable coastal road. I'm choosing the later but knowing I will do everything short of bringing surface forces to interdict any response. It'll be air coverage from LR, CD guns and hopefully a solid sub screen.

You cannot sweep at night, even with float planes..however the floats will fly a normal cap under the sweep setting.
I have however used LRCAP and it worked. I can't remember if I did it over a base or a task force, but it worked for one of them...I think it was a friendly base. I think.[:)]

Have you tried them in Babes? I've found them pretty effective for the Japanese, but haven't had cause to use any yet as Allies.
Maybe they could lessen the bombardment results even if they miss all targets, like flak at a base. Not sure, but that's what I am hoping. They're on the way already, so may as well experiment.

Upgrades: Nearly all divisions of the Aussie and Indian armies have now upgraded to 43 squads. Some just now as they've been away from decent supply fighting in NE India. Feels good to get this major upgrade taken care of and now have an abundance of squads to fill out units for both armies.
[font="Trebuchet MS"]Here is the Marshalls now. Getting major supply and fuel convoys to dump at key bases here now as we think about pushing further over the next months. Ailinglaplap, Nauru and Roi-Manur once captured should provide good striking bases toward Kusaie and Ponape plus coverage for a future Eniweitok invasion. I might feint one sooner than I'm ready to see what comes hunting. [/font]
