Breakout and Pursuit, Final positions, ultradave vs. the AI

Post by ultradave »

This was a German major victory, and I made sure I got the victory point totals in the picture. I did take Paris, and Brest is under siege. Coastal ports are under Allied control. It was fun taking St. Malo in a massive airborne operation.

Considering where I ended up, I'm not sure that this really qualifies as an Axis major victory, but, we did take a lot of casualties. It took about 6 turns to achieve a major breakthrough in the lines big enough to force the Axis to give up trying to contain the beachhead.

I suppose looking at where the victory point hexes I should have gotten much farther east, however, Paris was well defended. Anyway, this was my 3rd time trying this scenario and the best result.

I think this was just Normal. It wasn't an open city but enough resistance that it delayed me from moving any farther east before the end of turn 12. But they didn't fight to the death :-)

On the other hand, my first crack at this I didn't even manage to break out from the beachhead area. That was just after I got the game though, so I'm probably better now with a fair bit of experience.

I think scenario would play out a bit different against a human. The AI can essentially teleport units their MP range to build a line each turn and it does this ignoring interdiction costs and consequences. That defeats a lot of what I think this scenario is intended to reflect.

When I started it as the Germans it took everything I had initially to fall back under the steel rain and not get overrun by Bradley.

I just realized you hadn't even taken Granville.
Do you not use your TF's for support?

You should be able to rush Avranches before the Germans can react.

Wrong AAR I think. This doesn't look like anything I've played.

Its always hard to take, automatically a L3 fort and often gets a Division + as defenders!

Cracking walnuts with your bare hands is hard. I suggest a tool. Same with cracking coastal forts - use the tools you have (hint: big floating guns) and it's not so hard.

It seems to me that you have way too many units trying to clean up the rear pockets. Seven divisions around Brest and four more still in Normandy. You need to contain these garrisons with a single division and keep the rest of those bubbas moving east as hard as you can.

Probably a mistake. First time arriving at Brest however, and I hadn't realized that I'd be faced with something like a defensive CV of 185. Next time I'll leave it alone.

The TFs that are maintaining your temp ports can sail over there, offer their bombardment during the attack, and then have plenty of SMP to sail back to Normandy and maintain the temp ports. The American TFs can be used for fixing the small ports you take and also for shelling (non-port!) coastal hexes at the end of the turn.
It took two weeks (initial displayed CV was XX, but it reduced quickly after they started getting shelled), but Brest fell.
