Menu Bar disappears

Several times I have experienced the menu bar disappearing. Now I cannot save my game or run the turn. This is after several hours of "work" and is highly frustrating. There is other glitch behavior as well, such as 'r' key doesn't show roads. Repro steps are:
1)I pressed GCU button, isolated Australian Units only.
2) Scrolled to a unit which was part of a yet to be formed 6th Australian Division.
3) Pressed the 6th Div button on bottom left of screen to see status of the units needed to form the 6th Aus Div.
4) Exit this screen and there is no top menu bar.

Is there any way to get the menu bar back or otherwise at least save my progress before I restart the machine?

Note this bug has happened at least once before.

BTW. 'E' and 'F' hot keys do not work.

Something strange is going on there. Have you tried running the game in XP compatibility mode?
