Game Manual (Win8.1) (solved)

Hello. Compatibility issues between Win8.1 and TOAW COW v1.04 prompted me to get TOAW3 (thanks in no small part to Easter discount). I'm happy to say it runs well on 8.1. However, I'm unable to access the .pdf files. When I try to open them I get a Fatal Error indicating I couldn't access DDE server (I have Adobe reader XI). Most of these .pdfs have a .doc counterpart but not the Ebook manual. I can't access the manual from the Intro screen either. The Windows shortcuts are non-effectual per normal with 8.1.

Also, I have the original printed manuals from Talonsoft. I imagine these can still be useful but I thought I'd check with you folks first. Although I've owned every TOAW version that's come out, they were too complicated for me back in my gaming heydays, so I never really got familiar with game mechanics and rules.

Edit: FYI, I'm also running with the latest patch (v3.4)

If you're sure the files are there (i.e. TOAW3 installed correctly and works) and you've tried right clicking on one and using 'Open With' and Adobe Acrobat (or pdf is associated correctly with Adobe Acrobat and you've double clicked to try to open), it's probably related to something like this.

If you're using Google Chrome it has a built-in pdf viewer. Hit <CTRL>-O (for open), find/select your pdf and hit open.

If none of these help try searching on the exact error message with keyword "8.1@ as well. If you're still stumped, ask again with more details- I have 8.1 and no problem opening pdf files.

Thank you. Magically, the .pdfs are now accessible. Just prior to this discovery, I opened up an arbitrary .pdf that I knew I could open. Afterwards, I tried the TOAW3 .pdfs and they're all opening now too.

I'll consider this case solved and closed.
