Night Fighters

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Night Fighters

Post by LiquidSky »

As the war gets later and later, I notice that I have a fair number of night fighters, yet because of the large number of allied fighters, or the low number/experience of my day fighters...

The allies are no longer bombing me at night.

Shouldn't I be able to transfer a night fighter pilot into a day fighter? Why is it easier to put a random 17 year old in a plane then it is to take somebody who has flown dozens of missions in combat in a night figher?

I know I can just pick day missions for my night fighters, but it seems such a waste of good experienced pilots to make them fly a twin engine piece of garbage against a Mustang when I have a fair sized pool of Bf 109G's

IIRC there are some limits of switching between 2 engine and single engine fighters, so this may not be a night fighter thing. Pavel would have to chime in on this though as he knows the ins and outs of the pilots.

Well..I can take a pilot in a FW 190A-5/U2 Night Fighter and put him in a Bf 110G-4 Night fighter by upgrading his aircraft.

I can take a pilot of a FW-190A-5 Fighter-Bomber and put him in a Me410A Fighter Bomber.

But I can't take a pilot of a Fw190A-5/U2 and put him in a Fw190A-5.

I suspect it has more to do with some perceived play balance issue. You probably don't want a Ju52 pilot in a Me262. Or for all the LB bomber squadrons to be disbanded for the pilots.

But: The night fighting planes (and the basic dog fighting principle of pointy-end forward) are similar enough to go from day to night.
The allies can switch from bombing from day to night freely...the germans should be allowed to match it with the proper machines. For balance

There was a fix. I see no problem in switching adding former NF pilots to F/FB-F groups.

1.00.29
8. Wrong training flag for the FB group is checked when adding fighter type pilots. Fixed.

Ahh...okay. I am playing a .29 game, but it was started way back as a umm..probably .13 game.

Ok, just tried it and it worked for me in your game. Moved FTR type pilots from Bf-110 to bf-109 group.

Ahh..I just got my turn back and I am unable to 'upgrade' a Night Fighter into a Fighter. I suspect that we may be talking about two different things. If I disband all my night fighters, all the pilots will be eligible to fly in day fighters, correct? That is what you are telling me I think.

What I am trying to do is click on a night fighter squadron...hit the Manual Upgrade into a day fighter squadron..keeping all the pilots (and the squadron) together

Yes, I misunderstood you. I was thinking of pilot transfer. Direct upgrade is not possible.
