Issues with fortified positions, artillery and helicopter resupply

Post by governato »

Below are a few issues I encountered with some (WAD?) decisions the engine takes regarding arty and heli.
I was playing 'Fulda Gap' as WP in PBEM mode. These issues can probably be fixed easily, but I'd like to get the designers opinion.

- should units of the opposite force be able to take advantage of abandoned 'fortified positions'? I'd assume that them trenches 'd be pointing in the wrong direction, plus the advantage of camouflage/scouting/cleared LOF would be lost. My first thought 'd be to deny such benefit.

- I put artillery units in captured fortified positions ...and they scoot out every time they fire! That is frustrating and probably not realistic? Assuming that they 'd be able to use such captured positions (see above) it 'd make sense that they stay put...again canceling the benefit of captured fortified positions 'd solve this. Adding a 'do not scoot if in a fortified position' would be another option.

- it is my impression that when helicopter need resupply they override orders and take *the shortest* route to their boss HQ. Often the new route put them on a very exposed course. It'd make more sense that they first follow ALL the waypoints and THEN take fly to the HQ for resupply.

1). Fortified locations currently have an omnidirectional benefit. We are looking at changing that Southern Storm.
2). Artillery really does now want to sit. You do raise an interesting point when fortified. We will add your point into the arty discussion for Southern Storm.
3). The pathing issue on helos returning to resupply is a known issue and already on the books as part of a helo logic overhaul in Southern Storm. One of the major code changes will be moving helo logic to its own code module so we can separate pathing and other routines from ground units. This will give us a better control over the way they work without having to add special code and logic as we do now.

Good questions. I hope those are good answers.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!
