Fuel efficiency amongst xAK
Hi everyone,
I seem to remember seeing something where someone broke down xAK/AK/xAP/AP for fuel efficiency. I want to set up the most efficient tasks forces to run supplies/fuel/resources. Anyone remember seeing it and, if so, could you share the location or a link with me please?
Thanks!

Didn't Mike Solli make a spreadsheet for that?

Pretty sure you can do it in Tracker...

It is certainly avaiable in the tracker
a good rule of thumb is that the bigger the "cargo" ship, the more fuel efficient it is

..also don't mix ship classes.

The Yusen-S and Kyushu are the most efficient. The Yusen-N and Lima pretty good too.

One of the things that I noticed by playing in a PBEM game that considerations about fuel efficiency is one thing, the thing that one needs to consider is the point value of loosing high value AKs vs sending a bunch of 1pt xAKLs into enemy sub patrolled areas.

Yes. There are a lot of factors to consider though! [:D]
Which ships are more likely to survive against a sub screen and race past, like the 18 knot AKs. Which ships offer compatibility of speed with the best escorts? If sunk how much fuel are you also losing in the bunkers of those ships, and how much of whatever cargo are you losing? You could also say it's better to lose a 3 VP ships and a smaller percentage of the cargo for each TT hit than what would be on a 20 VP ship! [:D]
For troops I usually prioritize high value fast, efficient cargo and troop ships. I rarely send troops any distance longer than 20 hexes on an xAKL, especially through the open ocean. Close in though, the smaller ships may have an advantage as even aggressive commanders often 'elect not to attack' the tiny xAKL/PB types.
In game terms I'd really consider the time period, how torps are working, what type of subs frequent the area, how good the ASW air is and can you travel under its umbrella, and do you have plethora of the E escorts ready to patrol the area?
In my Japanese game currently going I'm suffering a bunch of losses as it's later 43 and he's being really aggressive with the USN subs near the HI now. I don't yet have a lot of Es and the ones I do have are assigned to TK/AO, so the troops get converted minelayers/minesweepers, the faster TB, and PB. It's pretty brutal, but I didn't feel quite right in my first game killing half of the Allied subs either. This feels like it's a duel and I like that. He adjusts and so do I and neither of us has yet begun to dominate this part of the game. [:)]

Thanks all for the feedback and thoughts. Michael - thanks much for the files. Normally I try to keep the same speed for merchants in a TF and look for the bigger loads to run supplies out to the front lines and the ships with a smaller cargo rating close to gather resources.
With this BTS Lite mode I'm much more concerned about the long-distance hauls since all of the cargo/tanker space has been cut by a third. For me that spells a third or more ships burning a third or more fuel than what I'm used to.
It's too bad they didn't have a Prius model cargo ship... [:D][:D]

Sails are making a comeback as a possibility for the next generation of merchant ships. The technology had largely died out by WW II because sail ships required a much larger crew than mechanized ships. With modern computer control the sails can be trimmed without a lot of people climbing the rat lines.

Is there any similar model for the Allied xAK ships ?

If you use tracker shouldn't that interpret the stats the same for the Allied ships? I've never used it on the Allied side so I can only guess, but assume there is no difference.
Also, I have more fuel sitting on the West Coast in 43 than I used in my entire first campaign as Japan! As Allies I rarely think about fuel. Just load it up and send it out. [:)]

Why worry? xAKs are “cargo” ships. They move Supply from A to B. One needs supply in Burma or New Guinea, one spends fuel getting it there. Fuel and supply don’t equate, so you may use more fuel than the supply you carry, but if you need supply, who gives a rats how you get it there.
If you are trying to hump fuel in your xAKs, you will very likely consume almost as much as you move, but so what? You need fuel at point B. Who cares how much you have at point A and what it costs to get it where needed; you need fuel at point B, so who gives a rats how you get it there.
And why not just use a tanker? I mean heck, all the combatants did and I presume they knew what they were doing. Or are you just trying to find the best way to game the system? If so, can’t hep ya none.
Welcome to the wonderful world of "choices" that Japan had to make in the real world, and why certain operations were so ....

I do. I give a rat's ass. Otherwise I wouldn't have asked. No - I don't want to game the system - that's not me. But when I'm setting up CS:TFs for transport I'd like to put a little thought into the process. I also wanna put some thought into the upgrading of some of the ships for transporting troops. And with converting some of the ships to PB or AV or AKE.
I like choices. Sometimes I need a quick-and-dirty and I grab what's available. Sometimes I need it yesterday and go for speed. I hate re-inventing wheels however. So if someone has been there and done that then I'd like to check over the work and see if I can use it.
