Issue with unit disappearing

Post by Grim.Reaper »

Playing Blackburn Ford scenario.....first picture shows my commander by Holden House, before the turn starts processing. The second picture shows the turn while processing and you can see my commander unit has disappeared. After the turn stops, then my commander does show again. Thinking they should display all the time unless I am missing something. This is repeatable.

commanders aren't shown during combat phase, and are hidden for both sides, but can still be hit and killed / wounded and damaged etc

What would be the purpose of making them disappear?

off top on my head no idea, but it's in the manual and has been in the code from day one, hopefully one of the top boss men will give a reason as unless i get manual out, mine may be wrong as it's a 100% yes answer, but reason is for me a bit unsure so don't want to guess it[;)]

Ok, thanks...will see if the dev can answer.....can't think of a purpose for hiding them during the combat phase and showing them when not in combat...seems like they should always be shown so you can always see all your units.

you can always see them, but as soon as you end your turn, they are hidden for both sides

Not sure I understand.....as I am moving my units around, I can see my commander unit....when a turn is processing, the commander unit is hidden....therefore, I can't see my commander unit on the map at all times. Can't think of a reason why you would make them disappear during turn processing so my comment was suggesting keeping them shown on the map at all times.

I believe the original reason anyway for doing his is so that your opponent (if human) doesn't see your headquarter units during the combat phase which he can see.

Staff may be able to give a better or more complete answer.

But yet he can see all the other units? Just not sure why the commander unit is singled out as being different and only different during the combat phase when neither player can do anything anyways.

In the end, not a major deal, just don't understand the logic.

But when the opponent goes back to play a turn he has a better idea of where that commander might be.

But when the opponent goes back to play a turn he has a better idea of where that commander might be.

I guess two things...

1) If this is only happening because of two player needs, then in a single player game, wouldn't think it should be done.

2) Just not understanding why this is only done for the commander versus any other unit on the map. Unless they fear the player is going to make a charge at the commander location to kill him. Although, if he does have line of sight anyway, he should be able to go after him.

I'll let it go, certainly not a major deal...just not wrapping my head around it.

I play mainly against the AI but I do like to at least dabble in PBEM

Think of it this way (better answer from Staff I'm sure is available)

When you are doing your turn against a human or against the AI you can only see what you can see. In short if none of your units has a line of sight to an enemy unit you can't see it. (Now a commander get's a little more protection even if in that line of sight) but say a unit is not in your line of sight, but when you get to the combat phase suddenly you can see all your opponents units anyway. Now you know where they are or how they were planning to sneak up on you while hidden from your sight. Kind of screws up fog of war a bit. Enough commanders can get killed already without broadcasting to the enemy just where they are.

I get fog of war and wasn't looking for the game to show me units during combat that I couldn't otherwise see. But right now the only unit disappearing during the turn is the commander, not any other unit as far as I can tell.

I understand and I probably wasn't clear but I thought the concept was the same. Your point about playing single player is well taken, but I'm sure if you had to design different combat segments to play for two player or one player would create a few programing issues. Also when you play how many of the opponents commanders are you seeing? If playing as the Yankee is it possible that Stonewall could be right there behind his regiment but you don't see him?

As you pointed out you know your unit is there and it doesn't really affect combat. I also understand as I have myself often looked at the combat phase playing out and thought, just where in the H did my commander go?! I then watch and look at the turn combat report carefully to see if the sob got himself killed.

I thought it was because Generals aren't factored normally in the combat phase, artillery can't hit them, so during the resolution they are removed from view.

Was reading about this sort of thing here...

Good point Spelk. Certainly could be more than one reason and/or new reasons that occur during a games development. Many requests are made for changes and patches.

Even if not factored into combat, still not sure why hide them during the combat phase...you as a player can't change anything during the combat phase so it's not like you can accidentally target them. Other units might not be able to participate in combat for one reason or another, so should they be hidden too?

Ok, I'll stop now:)
