I forgot to mention that.

I've completely shipped my sub ops over there from Dutch Harbor. I've about 50k each in fuel and supply right now. It saves at least two days each way on the trip.

Addendum:

It looks like Portland Roads is within supply range. With the arrival of the base forces there, supply has jacked up to 23,000.

None of this convoy business needed there.

Lucky you. I still have issues supplying Cooktown and Portland Roads even with convoys, though I have many many air units so I need lots of supply. The previous turn I had 18k supply at Cooktown but I still had the low supply indicator. In general I'm able to get around 70k supply between the two bases but the distribution is variable and based off demand. That being said, coastal shipping of units is still wise as it takes a while to reach Portland Roads over land and at this point you can't afford to wait months for engineers to arrive; you need them now.

I've got all my base forces engineers there now.  An air HQ is a day or two away, so I can support at least 200 planes there.

Of course, there's no airfield yet...

I think Cooktown's sitting at around 30,000-40,000 right now.

I had the supplies arrive within 2-3 days for the first units showing up.

P-40s sweeping PM may stir the pot a bit.

Certainly it would if you could! But they don't have the range. Which is why getting back to New Guinea from OZ is so difficult.

Umph... you're right. I was thinking the K could make it to 8. Not until the late Ns come out.

19 March 1943

Things got interesting

Bunches of ships sighted west of Suva. I think CF got careless with his search planes, which is what tipped me off. Judys and Kates were snooping troops and ships there.

With that alert, all the troops are put to combat mode from rest mode. CAP is airborne and strike planes set to naval strike. On hand here:

8 squadrons F4F-4
1 squadron F4U-1 (11 flyable)
2 squadrons SBD-3
3 squadrons B-26 (2 Bs one vanilla)
3 squadrons P-39D

The Marauders are fairly well trained in naval bombing, as are the Dauntlesses. I'm assigned one Airacobra squadron to antiship at 100', while the others help with CAP.

On the face of it, I think I've got a good air defense here. Strike capability is a bit light. If the fighters can hold their own, I may commit more 39s to Antiship. I'm hoping the Corsairs work as force multipliers here.

On the ground, Suva is just short of a division in troops with one USMC defense battalion. Nadi has the Fiji Brigade and two USMC defense battalions. Suva has one 155mm coast arty and a regiment of 5.5" guns. I had pulled out about 2 divisions worth of troops from here about a month ago, and I hope it doesn't bite me.

I'll probably hurl my subchasers out to mess things up. If he dual-roles his attack planes, it may draw off strikes from the troops.

I'm not fully sure what's coming ship-wise. The south group just says 4 CA, and the west group only reads 3 ships. You know at least part of KB is present.

My one recon Wildcat squadron is set to naval search in that cone to help flesh out the intel.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next turn...

Just to add.

I have four S-boats at Suva I had forgotten about. They'll cover the beaches to a hex out.

I've bunches of subs in the Noumea area, including a Dutch one. They'll go to the likely KB parking spots. I could get lucky, and the better torps helps.

The problem with defending a base like Suva in this situation is threat of bombardment. With the KB around there is no way you can prevent this. Your air defense might last a couple of turns but then the airfield will be too damaged to fly and you're going to have a bunch of damaged planes on the ground. Oh well...losing a few dozen planes on the ground isn't going to be too bad in the long run.

What you need to do is start preparing for a siege of Suva. Supply is excellent but you don't have enough LCUs to hold Suva against a determined Japanese assault. If you're going to hold the base, you're going to have to find a way to get Marine raiders and the like to augment the existing defense. And you need to establish some bases to the east of Suva to support your troops that will be under siege. The KB can't stay around forever so if he can't take the base quickly, you will have an opportunity to occupy bases around it. Unfortunate you pulled out those two divisions worth of troops. If they had been there Suva probably could have lasted a full 6 months even if it were completely isolated.

What is your naval response going to look like? Anything in mind?

I hadn't thought about bombardments.

My naval response is fairly weak. The biggest force I have is about 10 DDs/DMSs. I'm more concerned about saving my AR and AKEs. I'm writing off the ARD right now, as it's too slow. I have next to nothing on Pago Pago. I've considered these two bases fairly expendable in and of themselves, and if I lose them, I can work around it.

I'm hoping that in addition to the destroyers, all the chaff I'm throwing at him (SCs, YPs, etc -- about 30 or so) will bungle up his time and maybe prevent a bombardment or two. There's a bunch of TFs in the area now, so things will get very confused when this starts.

There's a lot of dice about to be thrown with this. I'm hoping I get some payback for not crushing KB with my slow battleships earlier.

The frustrating part is not really knowing what's there. You'd think the VPs would have detected the big ships right away.

The turn just arrived, so stay tuned.

20 March 1943

Okay... this is just weird.

As expected, there were a bunch of surface fights. Starting off, My DD/DMS group twice caught some APDs, but Moosbrugger's gunnery let me down. He has no less than eight battleships involved, including Yamato. I probably impacted his ammo situation. Suva got hit, but I did still have some active planes. Plenty of his search planes got hit by CAP. One of my retreating and surviving subchasers caught the sub south of Suva and beat the snot out of it. Unfortunately he had another to the west which hit Vestal, crippling her and sinking an AKE. There was no real air activity by either side. Maybe my air can recover enough. His only landing was at Kandavu, of all places. I guess that brings hope the point that that could have been another air base for me for mutual support. I'll file that away for the next game, if I live that long.

Don't be two impressed by the hits on the Kongos. Those were from the 4" guns.

I have 6-7 DMs which were able to escape to New Zealand.

If I've curbed the bombardment situation some, I'll consider this a win, for now.

On to the autopsy.

Part of me wants to run the five battleships I have at Sydney over, but that would be a fool's errand. Likewise, my carriers are all at Perth, escorting troop ships in from Cape Town.

One note, PB4Ys don't have cameras like I thought. I have a PB4Y-1P unit which did, and I confused the two.

A landing at Kanduva is just to establish a small base for patrol planes and fighters. The first step in laying siege to Suva. Not sure how you can really counter a deliberate and methodical siege here other than making the Japanese pay for diverting resources here; I think Fiji is doomed. Unfortunately I don't think you're in great position to do much damage elsewhere. Maybe your CVs you could launch a surprise attack on Soerbajas oil assuming you have the latest patch so you can target oil out of range (previously you had to be within range to order a strike forcing your CVs to sit in range for a turn). I think you could pull that off without too much risk assuming they don't get spotted off OZ headed north.

Have you had sigint reports of units planning for Fiji? Surely something must have come up. I'm surprised the Japanese were able to pull this off without you figuring it beforehand.

I have had a rash of intel about units prepping for Nadi lately. Pretty much when I would cross-reference those unit in the Monkey, they'd have a recent location in such places as the Manchurian/Soviet border or Japan proper. Looking back, some of the location notes are pretty dated. I'm still getting intel on units prepping for Australia when they're still clearly in remote areas. I haven't been tracking this as closely lately, so events may have changed.

This game has been devoid of location intel on major warships, which is unusual for me.

I'm not sure what his goal is at this point in the war, unless he's serious about New Zealand. I have half a mind to kick off the Gilberts op, but he's probably a day away right now, so that's a pointless risk.

My thinking about base defense has been awfully one dimensional. Seeing the results for one's self is a great educator. Reading about it in an AAR wouldn't have sent the message home like this.

I'll be developing my inland bases a bit in NZ. I am diversifying a bit in Australia, which is good.

I'm hoping his battleships are low on ammo. They were flinging plenty of shots at SCs and YPs. I also have five subs at the moment crisscrossing the area. I deserve some luck at this point. Akagi's listed as officially sunk from the previous sub incident, but I'm skeptical.

I may try the Soerabaja raid. I am dubious of naval air to impact the oil, though. In previous games, the effect had been minimal.

It looks like he pretty much neutralized or destroyed all your surface and air assets around Fiji. [:(] His massive surface fleet, backed (presumably??) by KB, is just about untouchable. But if he is committing so much there, you would figure it must leave an opening for you to counter somewhere else. Hope you can pull something off.

Yeah, the Java raid looks good right now.

We'll see if my subs work some magic. You never know.

Trincomalee may be due for a visit, too.

In the back of my mind, I'm a little worried that the Australia threat may be legit. If he does, I can drop the hammer wherever he lands. Gotta love trains. As it is, New Zealand DEFCON has ratcheted up a couple clicks. Their air situation is similar to Suva's, but not as vulnerable. I think I had planes at Nadi -- forgot to look. I think they'd be P-39s. The air at Suva isn't wiped out. They looked about half strength after the BB work was done.

Lick 'em tomorrow, though.

I hope so -- but he could come in for more bombardment with LRCAP from KB (assuming it is around there as sounds likely). Or a massive carrier air raid on Suva to shut down the airfield.

We'll see about the bombardment. Ammo may be an issue, with all the chaff I flung at his battleships.

If he doesn't bombard, I think my fighters will make a fight of it. For how long... who knows. This is the situation where I wish my carriers could ambush if he over-commits.

Despite the pain, I am enjoying this.

You need to take those sorts of intel threats seriously. Especially when the current conditions are conducive to it. If a unit can be bought out, it is a threat.

I don't see that as a pointless risk. Getting into the Gilberts is very important so you can start building air bases there. I'm not one to advise taking needless risks but opportunities like this don't come often. Who knows when the KB will pop out again offensively. Though it certainly would be dependent on what fleet assets you have here. If everything is in Perth then idk what you can do. Which is another reason why I was against that huge buildup there as you miss any opportunity in the Pacific like this.

I'm sure they are. But they will go back to Noumea to rearm and be back in a weeks time. But that doesn't really change anything for you. I don't think your air force has the ability to do much offensively anymore down there.

Yea, I don't expect much. But what else can you do? As you have said CF is usually cautious and ready to make countermoves. This time it is CF who made the move. Now you make the countermove.

No, I think that is a very real threat. If that is what intel is reporting that is where CF will go. I think Australia is CFs endgame. He could aim for New Zealand but Australia is the bigger prize. This Suva OP is probably designed to further isolate Australia as to facilitate an invasion there.
