Japanese forces crush 4 chinese divisions south east of nanchang
Captain Watanabe looks up from his desk
The lights are on, shore power now available, but little else is running aboard his destroyer.
Fuel is promised.................
Whatever the future holds, the this week, at least, means enforced idleness. Time, then, to catch up with a few things.
He contemplates the two men standing before him, and the newly arrived manilla folder on his desk.
carefully, he extracts a sheet of paper from one of the folders
"An ...........interesting career..........very interesting. A few holes in the records though............care to explain petty officers?'
Hirate, Okano glance quickly at each other, then back at watanabe. They say nothing
Watanabe purses his lips.........yes, an interesting career indeed, one day he might even like to fill some of those gaps.....a patrol boat, a carrier, no, two carriers, the Yamato...........and what the hell ..how did they swing some of these postings?
An interesting tale...........but other things need addressing.
"Gentlemen, I have examined carefully your records, for what they are.........and there is a glaring mistake I need to rectify'
Both men stand stock still, trying to hide a sudden worry that flashes across their face
Watanabe stands a liitle more stiffly.
'Coxswain!"
The Petty Officer, obviously waiting outside for the moment, enters the cabin
He holds a warrant in his hand
"Petty officers Hirate, Okano, you are both hereby promoted to Chief Petty officer, as from this moment.you are......."
The traditional words flow, as the two mens jaws seem to almost lower in comical slow motion
"Congratulations men..........long overdue it appears.......and your promotion probably will mean I will lose you.........but we shall see,"
But not if he can help it.
Two good men like that, now?

September 10th
japanese production for today:
4 george fighters
3 Frank fighters
1 Tony
1 peggy bomber
The Russians begin to realise the long cherished dream, the assualt on Port Aurthur begins
Two japanese divisions, and other shattered units resist
But it will not be a long battle, we think.
The first of 8 depot divisions arrives in Tokyo, the old, the very young conscripts, the now idle factory workers
Eight of these divisions are planned to be raised, these are the very last new units we will see..............
Japanese tanks enter Nanchang, it seems every chines unit in central china is on its way there.
Lovely feeling having allies react to japanese moves late in forty five [:D]
Hirate, Okano.......... they go ashore, smell out a bar which still sells beer...........and basically drink it dry.

September 11
On this beautiful clear day in Hiroshima bay, Hirate can stand on the quarterdeck of Susuzuki, and see clear across the bay towards the village where his wife lives. The view, normally, would just be a vague grey shore line, only the most prominant features visible.
Now, over there, two features are very visible.
Yamato and Musashi lie there, grey mountains. But even at this distance, the guns can be seen
It is easy to tell where the village is now, at least, its hidden directly behind those man made mountains.
It is 8:15 am, just after the morning muster, the men dispersing to their work. With the ship shut down, few spares, (not even a tin of paint available), its going to be a slow day. Cleaning mainly.
The new CPO chevrons weigh heavily upon Hirate. CPO's are not meant to get their hands dirty, although he recalls a Certain Charge, (what was his name?) on Zuiho who always seemed to be in the thick of it..
But not, apparently, on Susuzuki.
'We are getting some new boys, and I mean boys , this week" the Engineer has told him " I want you to try to rustle up a training program for them, let them benefit from your experience..."
he supposes he can do it, if his red scarred face doesn't scare the hell out of them, that is..............

The Assualt on Port Arthur advances, steadily, steadily.
They do not call it the steamroller for nothing
The chinese however, have been chased into Nanchang.
A race for reinforcements on both sides has begun

Ogowa banks, and carefully observes the view below
Yamato lies of the village, of the girls.
Around the town, and antheap of disturbed workers...........he can see the beginnings of a floating pier, AA gun pits on the shore, trucks scattered all over the place.
The house, however, looks untouched, the fishing boats still on the beach.
he circles again, noting the hills, the approaches.........Its going to be a buggar of a job if his eagles are going to be called to defend these two bloody ships.
But in his heart, its not defending the ships that takes all his attention
Its that little house..........

Battleship Tirpitz was - eventually - sunk by bombers. Today the wreck is gone, but the shore is marked by a dozen or more small circular ponds, the craters left by the misses. Some are hundreds of meters from the ship's anchorage. When the bombers come for Yamato and Musashi, there will be no bombs as big as the 12,000-pounders the British (they called it a "medium capacity" bomb) used against the Germans. But there will be many, many more.

RE: The little ship that could.
Medium Capacity because it was not designed to go off on contact like high capacity (explosive filler % of total bomb weight), but to burrow into the ground, bunker or in that case, ship and then go off. That meant a thicker nose cap and casing and less explosives.ORIGINAL: Smoky Stoker

Reports said some of the hits on unarmoured portions of Tirpitz passed straight through and detonated in the sea bottom which caused mine effect damage.

Emperor Mikasa.supreme warlord, sun to 100 million, a living god............
And I am trapped in the imperial palace, a victim as much as my people..who everywhere now must walk.
There is fuel for him, of course, but what impression would that make, to drive down the streets, which now see only pedestrians.
"So, Admiral.........your estimation of the allied intentions, and , if you do not mind, this opinion of the interior ministers, that we all, every last one of us, face starvation?"
The Admiral grimaces.
"Truth please Admiral, I, for one, am past floral language and obscure messages. As our American foes would say..........give it to me straight"
'Your highness, the harvest this year, was, surprisingly, good.
Coal reserves are still, ...........satisfactory, some still comes from the North.
"But the fuel ?"
'There is little............enough to allow food distribution until, March, April, 46. After that.............
'The end comes quickly then?"
"It comes quickly"
Mikasa thinks. 6 months. Can we hold for 6 months. Can we make him bleed again?
"And the allies?"
The Admiral rubs his hand wearily across his brow. "That, your Highness, I honestly do not know. Their fleet has vanished. They sit and do nothing in Minando. Since that funny bomb.............and I have my own thoughts on THAT...........we have hardly seen a bomber, .a desolutory bomb here, or there on lost bases, but nothing we need fear.
'And they sit outside Singapore still?'
"Still"
A long silence fills the room
the emperor speaks the unspoken hope
"Do you think they have lost the will to see it through?"
"I think they might have"
6 months
We can hang on for that long............

Fuel shortages mean ships do not move
And sometimes, you cannot hide them.............
The Russians attack the port of rashin, North east Korea
2 AS, 2AR, 2 AG, a patrol boat, an E class, are blasted to pieces over a brutal, brutal day.
Once, years ago, heads would have rolled for this disaster.
Now, one shrugs, looks the other way.................

I am going to step out of the story for a while, and just give a few thoughts on the game, as I see it
1/ playing absolutely stock.and great, great credit to matrix, the economy model has worked , in this game, brilliantly
Even with quite large areas still in japanese control, there are few ships to cart anything.
2/ plane stocks are huge, but really mirror real life, heaps of useless crates converted to kami's, but as for elite pilots and planes, well there is Ogowa's eagles, 2 army squadrons, and really little else
3/ Lots of soldiers............not many guns
4/ Fuel...........well this is the interesting bit, despite the story line, today I filled Yamato, and the fleet. HI and production says I have 300000 tons...........but a huge number of cities are showing failed production. I have a lot of oil in the northern japanese island, but only 2 tankers left there to cart it.........
Overall, the model is working really, really well. despite the " FUN" in China, all that was /is a side show, there are no supplies there at all, he will quickly take those cities back
Finally, i think Cantona has a big case of game fatigue (little wonder i tink) No signs at all of an offensive, little bombing, a lot of stuff that seems to be in almost automatic.
The last battle I now firmly believe, seriously disrupted whatever plans he had, I see battleships in port at Davao, the rest of the fleet has gone to Australia.............a long way from the front.
In a final washup of this game, I reckon the battles for Minando were what decided the issue, he is suffering a huge lack of troop lift ........
I don't think he will invade Japan, of do any other pacific attacks, settling for taking Korea, all of China, and hoping that will gather enough points for "a win"
I will be more than happy if this game finishes with japan, Formosa, northern phillipines , and iwo jima allied troops free.
lastly, really struggling to write anything entertaining , as so little is happening, I hope something will change all that.
Strange, playing as japan, and hoping the allies will attack the homeland in 45.............
(cause I think I could actually smash it[:)])
thankyou fellow journeymen for the patience, and the sharing
herbie

RE: The little ship that could.
Brilliant game and AAR.
When he dropped the Atomic bomb he lost a full level of victory points in the game. It must have been devastating for it to not have had much of any effect. Another Atomic bomb that missed it's mark could put the game into a win for the Japanese.
I never understood the reason the developers chose to punish the players of this game for something that did actually happen historically.
Bravo!

What do you think accounts for a good amount of your success?
I have envied your surface TF successes and am always open for learning new techniques and tactics. Any thoughts there Sir?

Sept 18
(little to report for 4 days, CVE kaiyo is sunk near manila on a blockade breaker run bya SS..yes, I am STILL getting ships through to one oil port)
Ogowa awakens with a start.
For a moment his brain, so rudely taken from the smooth flesh of a certain Giesha, struggles to refocus. Immediate thoughts, no air raid siren, no yelling, or frantic activity, just the gentle snoring of Oda in the room, and Diogowa's ugly dial grinning down on him in the pale light.
Definately no Giesha...........
Ogowa groans......."let me guess..........I know the look, some part of the empire requires our rescue...........right?"
Diogowa grins.........."well 3rd air fleet seems to be excited about something"
Ogowa's mind fixes on its numbr one piority......."carriers?"..........yamato, a little house.
'No, no sign of those cowards..something about Korea, I think"
Korea. Those bloody russians............easy kills, but, gods, the trouble that operating there means.............
Ogowa swings himself upright on his bunk. 'Third air fleet huh?, lazy barsteds..Breakfast first my friend, then we will see where us mere mortals will have to go next ney?"
By midday, "the where next' is not much clearer than what they knew at first light. Words of 'collapsing front', out flanked, steamrollers........and worringly "maximum effort" have filled the morning.
But of fixed details.........truk all,.
Get Norrth, get to some hole called kanko, and get every bird aloft tomorrow.
A fly in and fight, fly out effort Ogowa thinks..........no one seems to have even thought how his eagles would be sustained.
Diogowa meets him on the steps of the HQ as he emerges, mind filled witha million details to attend to.........'pack lots of food you fat barsted'
'Action then?"
"The russians have come into zero range of the homeland, tomorrow it seems every one who can carry a bomb is going hunting, some bloody mountain near kanko, North korea"
"kanko?" Diogowa is no fool, one knows exactly these days the range to every field from here, and kanko is not for the George.
'yep, kanko, pack your crap, pack some extra warm @#@% we are going..........."
pack your crap.
How many times now in this war have they done this?
Ogowa has little to pack, a sleeping mat, some balls of rice, his bible.
The essentials.
They join his chute, his revolver, the clipboard, maps, code books, and a second jacket...........
Winter is coming fast now, Korea will be bloody cold.
But the fighting might be hot.
140 eagles arrive at Kanko just on dusk.
Flurries of snow, a muddy strip. Surprisingly 2 air flottilla HQ's, and all the support that means.
But pitifully little in supplies.
But no shortage, apparently, in Russians. Faintly, in the cold, cold dusk air, the un missable sound of massed artillery in full voice
The sound of the steamroller.......................
