Rebalanced Scenarios

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Pzgndr, readiness can go back up to 100‰ from any default start point. Dropping training levels will impact many things. Morale will be more of a run away under fire. Readiness is fatigue and reduces a units effectiveness in all facets. So test with those and see what you get.

OK so basically all we can really fiddle with is the unit training parameter to affect orders delays to produce an additional sluggishness in Soviet command and control.  The AI does play by the scenario parameters, yes?  Thanks!

Yes, the AI uses the scenario and then in game parameters.

Total aside, feel free to ignore! I was at Ft Sill in the summer of 1984... AIT as a 31V. I'm from Connecticut, and I loved the smell of the trees there - I think they were sycamore? Now that I'm 50 and am being laid low by Rheumatoid Arthritis and age, I'd love just once more to be 19 and on a PT run in the early morning at Sill...

Swamp_Yankee, being 50 myself, I too would love to be 19 again and playing hours of volleyball and football again. Walking these days with a degenerative disc condition in the lower back is no fun at times. Age has a way of catching up with us. [:(]

First and foremost you all need to remember that balanced is my opinion. I consider a scenario balanced when I play it hard and get a draw or close to a draw. There are various reasons for that.

Second, I consider that Murphy is alive and well in every war, battle, campaign. And absolutely in every scenario/campaign in the game. Which means quite literally Sh!t Happens. You will rarely have all the tools, equipment, troops YOU think you need to complete the mission. Deal with the missing parts and get on with it. That to me is reality. I understand that's not everyone's reality but it's mine and unfortunately if you are playing the scenarios/campaigns I create you get to live with mine. If you make your own or play other people's you can get away from how I think combat looks.

Third, there will be new content added when we rebalance them. Not sure how much but there will be some. My commitment to all of you was that I would provide FREE content whenever possible and this is another of those times when it's possible.

Good Hunting.

I like the way you think about that, and it's probably what give us enjoyable and interressing scenarios ^^ No doubt you will handle that well.

To be honest the AI sucks when attacking too . This is the case with EACH computer game I know. Actually RS has one of the best AI's I know, but it's still not good enough. I doubt that we will see a really competitive AI anytime soon, this is just the reality. You can live with that when you play as NATO against a massively superior WP AI. But the things get really unbalanced in human vs human games and playing WP against the NATO AI.

Wargames and some sort of games like that (4X) is usually played in single-player mode by the vast majority, despite a small comunity of multiplayers folks ^^. And even in that case, we usually play in multiplayer competitive games 2 time a scenario, one each side, and compare the results for giving a winner/best gamer.

I should here notice that the AI in FC:RS is really interressing, thanks to the dev's way to update their AI at every new feature they include in their game and continue to improve these. It's really a major point in wargames. Thanks you.

Sorry to hit the gunship point again, but the last time we had this discussion I opinioned (and I think I got agreement) that the real problem with helicopter gunships is not their effectiveness in combat per-se, but the fact that the game is incredibly lax in assuming that forward airbases exist in a quantum cloud 1.5km all around wherever the top HQ is, which means their persistenceon the battlefield is often far above what one would expect and means they have a disproportionate influence on the battle.

Just throwing in a few withdrawal 'use them or lose them' timers on scenarios where there wouldn't reasonably be an on-map forward base for them would probably make quite a few scenarios suddenly feel a lot fairer.

Helicopter availability was checked when the helicopters were added the first time. Unless they are totally overpowering in the scenario, with no way to counteract them, the mix for the battles won't change. What is more likely to change is the ground units, especially NATO ability to counter them.

When looking at the numbers of helicopters, or any other weapons system, in a scenario you have to consider that for the most part the scenarios in the game represent the battles of main effort for the entire war in West Germany. As the points of main effort they would get full support by whatever assets are available to both sides. That means that force multipliers are often out of proportion to the norm.

The stats of the helicopters also need to be looked at. Not that I'm a NATO fanboy, but currently AH-64 and Mi-24 have the same level of protection. Again, I'm not an expert but it doesn't seem to be right. They are not the same type nor they represent the same generation in helicopter development. I've came upon some data, that the vital elements of Mi-24 were resistant to 12.7mm fire, while some elements of Apache are resistant to 23mm. In fact the two types are incomparable. Mi-28 is Apache's modern counterpart.

Good to know that.

Here's a quote from OTS facebook profile:
"Now that 2.09 is finished it's time to start my part of the deal and finish the polishing process for Red Storm. The scenarios will all be rebalanced as needed and new content will be added at the release. Hopefully this can gain traction for a quick release and then on to another content related project due to release this fall".

So can we expect 2.09 after the scenarios get rebalanced?

Are you seriously planning to release "Southern Storm" sometime this fall?

No.

No, 2.09 will be released before I rebalance the scenarios. It wouldn't make sense to rebalance them and then make changes to the code.

No, we are not going to release 2.1 this year. I didn't say we were. What I said was there are projects currently in the works that should be released this fall and probably at other times this year as well.

Good Hunting.

Can we expect some DLC's then? I'd love to see new campaigns, that would feature some new NATO and WP nations that use some older equipment like Leopard's 1, AMX's-30 or T-55's.

I'd pay any money for such a new content...

Not new nations. New maps, new scenarios, new campaigns are all a distinct possibility though....
