National Guard Divisions/Brigades missions

Post by LOK_32MK »

I am trying to redo a US-USSR scenario and I am trying to determine which US National Guard Divisions/Brigades were slated for missions to the European and other theaters (Korea/Japan/Middle East).
The NATO OOB v8.6 (found here http://defense-and-freedom.blogspot.com ... -1989.html) does a very good job in listing the Divisions/Brigades that had a NATO mission but I could not find out any info for the Pacific or Middle East Theaters.
Also other on-line sources list additional/alternative brigades participating in REFORGER exercises. It also seems odd that some divisions like the 28th Infantry Division based in the Eastern US did not have a NATO mission since it was used after WWII to reinforce West Germany but the 40th Division based in the Western US had a NATO mission.
If anyone has a definitive guide I would be very grateful.
Thank you

Greetings,
I have been looking at NATO-Warsaw Pact European scenarios. In my opinion, Red Thunder 1988 is the one that I favor. Indeed, the original designer, Eric Rutins has graciously given me permission to use it as the basis of a modification that I hope to publish here in the near future.

Andy Johnson's OOB that you referred to for NATO and Warsaw Pact forces generally seem to be quite accurate for 1989. These OOBs are basically the ones used in Red Thunder 1988. I am not surprized to find some variation in REFORGER assignments; in his NATO OOB, Johnson notes several Bdes that are renumbered/reassigned in 1989.

To answer your question re: US National Guard divisions with NATO missions are generally Infantry Divisions (Mech). That would explain why the 40th ID has a NATO mission and the 28th (a light div) does not. I was in the 28th in this time frame, XO 1-111th Inf, and I was not aware of any overseas contingency role.

I will be anxious to hear how you are doing with your scenario and share resources.

Cheers

Thank you so much. That makes sense (about the 40th and 28th Infantry Divisions). I agree the current version of Andy Johnson's NATO OOB is excellent.
I am trying to revise my 1988 Global Conflict scenarios in anticipation of 3.5 (or 4.0). I started with a single global scenario in CoW, then split it in two scenarios for TOAW III and now I am planning to break up the two scenarios into four (or more?) smaller scenarios, increase the map resolution (10-15km) and the number of units. However, the players will no longer have the flexibility to send reinforcements to different theaters as they please so I must allocate which units appear in which theater (scenario).
Do you know of any NG units that were slated to reinforce the Korean/Pacific Theater?
