Conquest of BSLand

Post by TeaLeaf »

Last turn the Brits took Berbera from Italy. I thought BSomaliland should be conquered?
I just picked up (with a TRS, I mean) the Indian Mech that took it and liberated French Somaliland last turn, so that's why I notice it only now and not last turn during conquest.

I remember when Italy took it, berbera was enough to trigger conquest of the entire territory.
EDIT: FYI, there were no Italians in BSLand anymore. To be more specific, there were/are no Italians in all of Africa except Tripoli.

Liberation has different hex control rules than conquest and territories have different conquest and liberation hex control rules than major or minor countries.

With Territories you may have to walk over all the enemy hexes.

Thanks Paul, I couldn't find it in the rules.
I still cannot find a clear explanation. As far as I can find relevant rules, I understand that:

1-Territories can be conquered.
2-Conquered territories or minor countries however, cannot be conquered, only liberated or reverted.
3-Liberation and Reversion is only explained for Minor Countries (and Major Powers) -> This is perhaps the hidden explanation that all hexes of conquered territories need to be walked over?

If that is the case I can understand the difference between liberation/retaking of a Minor Country (French SL) or a territory (British SL). Playing MWIF certainly gets people to learn the rules better than playing WIF. If you don't have a rules-expert stored in the closet, ready for questioning [:D].

This is a bug. Look at the FAQ on this item:

Q13.7-20 13.7.5 May conquered Territories be reconquered
or liberated?

They cannot be re-conquered but may only
be liberated. Date 07/03/2008

This is done by meeting the same
conditions as for conquest
(see 13.7.1).
Date 12/05/2008

13.7.5: Conquered minor countries, major powers and
Commonwealth home countries (...) may not be
conquered. Instead, the major power controlling its
capital can liberate it during the peace step if that major
power is from the other side to the major power that
conquered it.
12/05/2008

Now we look in RAW:

To conquer a territory, you must control every city and port in that
territory.

So capturing the port of Berbera should be enough to "liberate" British Somaliland.

Yes I know that FAQ very well. It says you liberate a territory by meeting the same conditions as for conquest. It does not say what happens to hex control when you do liberate a territory. RAW7 says what happens to hex control when you liberate a country. What happens to hex control when you liberate a territory is undefined.

You are right of course. However, if it's undefined in the rules, we need to define it for MWIF. So we need a ruling on this one...

Do you have a saved game of this? I am curious whether BSL is shown on the Relationship form as having been liberated.
