Game Minimizes and Can't Be Opened

Post by pbbm »

I just bought War in the Pacific and the game loads up to the first title card, and then minimizes and can't be opened again by either alt+tab or clicking on the game icon on the taskbar. At this point the only way to close the game is to end the task in the Windows Task Manager.

If anyone can help me fix this issue I'd be greatly appreciative.

That sounds really bizarre! I've never heard of anyone running into that. Can you give some more information about your PC, operating system? How are you actually starting the game?

Hey witpqs

Thanks for replying.

My basic specs are:

Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) (64-bit)
i7-2600 CPU 3.4 GHz
NVIDIA GTX 770
16 GB RAM

I have installed the game on a 2 TB secondary HDD, which is currently where most of my games and programs are stored (C:/ is a SSD drive that holds my operating system). I have also tried to change the target of the autorun properties on the desktop to:

"H:\Program Files (x86)\War in the Pacific\autorun.exe" -w -skipVideo -deepColor -px1920 -py1080

I hoped that this would force the game to open in a fullscreen windowed version, but the game still minimized and stays minimized.

I should also mention that I have a multiple monitor set up. I didn't think that this would affect the game, as it doesn't with any other game, but maybe that's part of the problem why? My desktop resolution for my main monitor is 1920x1080, with 1680x1050 as my second monitor, and a tablet that is 1920x1080.

"H:\Program Files (x86)\War in the Pacific\autorun.exe" -w -skipVideo -deepColor -px1920 -py1080
This is likely the problem. Instead of addressing the 'autorun.exe', replace that with 'War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe'. I don't know if you will still have some problem to sort out, but don't reference autorun. Just forget autorun even exists!

Of course our set-ups are different, but just for reference here are the switches that I am using on Windows 7. One for full screen, one for windowed mode (that one tuned to leave room at the bottom for the Windows menu bar or whatever it's called so I can just click on icons to switch to other running apps).

For full screen:
"C:\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #1\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -dd_sw -archive -d -px1920 -py1080

For windowed mode (the -w does that):
"C:\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #1\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -cpu4 -dd_sw -archive -wd -pxf1920 -pyf1018 -noFire

The shortcuts are set up to run 'Maximized'. The reason I use two different shortcuts is that I run the combat replay in full screen mode so I can see the combat animations. When I do that in windowed mode my screen jumps. I use windowed mode to issue orders because the space at the bottom allows me to more easily switch back and forth to play aids like Tracker, Intel Monkey (the -archive switch is required for this so that the reports files it needs in the SAVE\archive sub-folder are created), a text editor I use to read the four reports produced each turn plus write my AAR post (I use Notepad++).

I hoped that this would force the game to open in a fullscreen windowed version, but the game still minimized and stays minimized.

I should also mention that I have a multiple monitor set up. I didn't think that this would affect the game, as it doesn't with any other game, but maybe that's part of the problem why? I just realized that many people who have installed into the Programs area have run into problems. You might want to consider uninstalling, then installing in some other place.

Thanks, witpqs!

That target completely fixed the problem. I like the windowed mode better, so thank you for showing me how to get the windowed mode and the full screen mode to work.

Thanks again! :D

But on the issue of it being installed in the Programs area, you might run into trouble later. If weird things happen, just move the installation.

I'll try it now and see how it runs. Hopefully I don't run into any issues, but if I do I will keep that in mind.

Thanks again, witpqs.

Hey,

Thanks again for your help. I was noticing stuttering on my screen and misunderstood what you wrote before (I thought you said you got stuttering only at fullscreen, not realizing you said it was the other way around). So I reinstalled the game under C:/ and not in the Program folder, but now the windowed mode is showing up in about 800x800 instead of 1920x1018, and when I switch to full screen the problem returns and the game minimizing on me as soon as I open it up (even using the .exe application and not autorun).

I'm not sure what exactly to do at this point.

Strange that it worked before. Double check everything, including all the shortcut settings.
