with some patch this was changed, lownav earlier was below 6000ft, now it seems 1000ft or so. Some of the bomber crews that were involved even increased a pt of navbmb in the attack at 2000ft. Don't ask me when this was changed or why, to me it doesn't make any sense at all, hence my comments on this. Why training pilots or using those highly skilled crews in aircraft that were designed for ship strikes when a couple of sh*tty pilots in sh*tty floatplanes can do better at 100ft completely untrained.

Forget about the cannon or MGs, it's all about the bombs so attacking at 100ft with reduced load still will get you more hits than bombing from reasonable heights. Bomb at min alt, use your fighters at max alt, that's how you get the best results. I remember Nemo being applauded for using a sh*tload of Lillies to night bomb airfields at 100ft... [8|] There is always a way to game the game and we are steering right into this in every aspect except what is house ruled.

Again, no rules are being violated so everything goes. I preferre it halve way reasonable but that path has been left and we are only in the first month of the war [:D] Putting up hrs for everything means not finding an opponent...

Are you using Symon's air fixes in this one? They help make sure some airframes don't operate well at high altitudes in site of the dive advantage. Most early Allied planes will just get creamed up high while the A6M and Oscar lines do pretty well up to 31k.

actually got no idea, is scen 30 using these changes?
AFAIK the changes are in Babes for a while now. So if you have an old download you would need to check, but if you did a fresh download then you should have them.

They did the changes and then (a few weeks later?) changed them based on feedback and discussion. The adjustments reduced some of the gains that certain Japanese fighters got. In my current 1x1 we are still playing with the interim load (what the hell! [:D]).

Just check the Ki-100-1. If it goes 385mph in your game then you're using the new air stuff. [:)]

With regards to Singapore, mrKane surely knows it can't be held. Still, it must be defended for as long as possible to deny the IJN easy early access to India and Ceylon as well as a good port. I think I hold the record for losing it fastest (December....) and once I also defended it succesfully for months..

that's how the Ki-100 is looking like when loading the scenario. Not 385 but 386mph

yeah but then I still wonder what he's really up to. His Indian bgds were cut off in the North due to him not even thinking about guarding his rail lines when one of the small units that are so numerous would have been enough so he won't be able to recombine that Division. I was very conservative as I did not land early on Mersing (fault on my part but I didn't know how the game would evolve when it comes down to how we play it) but all MrKane was doing on Malaya was clicking everything into strat mode heading to Singers. His retreat failed due to this so he will get something around 850av into the base. If you manage to retreat everything there it should be 1100 and you can recombine the Indian division which is quite a help.

I expect him to build forts to 5 so that's all he might achieve with bringing pretty much ALL available fighters to Singapore. Lvl 5 forts will mean one more deliberate attack needed compared to level 4 but if someone expects me to bring only a handful of units to Malaya that might be wrong. I am not in a hurry at the moment as those units just take a while to be moved in as they are also coming from Japan or from the recently captured Hong Kong. From the last couple of games, the river crossing and the resulting shock attack often already resulted in a 2:1 or 3:1 knocking down the forts by 2 or 3 lvls if the engineer die roll hits and one isn't too unlucky with the adjusted av roll.

I know that MrKane got a lot of experience and the only real fault so far was leaving halve of Malaya empty so he might be up to something that will cause me more than a little headache so we'll see. I am definitely not underrating his abilities but if he would be really able to hold Singapore longer than the historical surrender date I would be surprised. And I am saying this well knowing that he puts more effort in defending the damn place than real life but so do I taking it. [:)] So we are aiming at mid Feb to take the base at the latest.

when complaining about the die rolls with my not so succesful sub attacks on Enterprise I've already said that the dice always roll in both directions at some point and it didn't take too long that I saw the dice completely favouring us today... we take Hong Kong and I can't remember ever taking the city with nearly 400.000 fuel, 40.000 supplies and both the 80 HI and 220 LI being fully intact... [&o] that's really nice as this will give us quite some additional and unexpected amounts of supplies over the coming years...

I like you comments in the combat report.

Don't drop down to 100' for the level bombers. By all means with Zeroes, but I am sure you have other uses for those.[;)]

I think I will learn a lot following here; heck, I already have.[&o]

What are you doing plane research wise? You do mention going after planes that will win the altitude race. In this game what are those as the Tony is really different from stock Tony?

Aren't you going to research anything just for fun...it is a game after all?[:)]

Good to see you back in action and complaining..[:D] I enjoy your AARs. One note, I would not fret much about the 100 foot height for bombers. The AA upgrades in the most recent patch really have an effect. It only makes sense that a seagull would bomb an slow AK with a couple of 303 MGs from 100 feet. But once the ships start to get some AA upgrades any sort of bombers attacking at 100 feet are going to get chewed to bits. I just lost 30 heavy Allied bombers over two turns while attacking too low (8,000ft) at a Japanese base with a lot of AA units. Kind of blew me away to see it. In the past all my 4Es bombed at 6-8k. Not any more.

R&D? Nothing spectacular different than what most IJ players do. Create size 30 R&D factories and focus on streamlining engine and aircraft production. First real step ahead in terms of fighters will be the TojoII but one doesn't get that earlier than May but the Tojo will pretty much rule until the end of 42. Then it will be succeeded by the George coming online some time in early 43. Next step for the IJA will then be the Frank in late 43 early 44 and I guess that's it then other going through some of the George/Frank versions at best. Seeing late 44 and super advanced IJ aircraft is something one usually doesn't see in a PBEM because either the Allied are trashed earlier or the Japanese. [:D] Having a "balanced" campaign usually isn't going to happen.

As for bombers, well, nothing unusual here either. Army = HelenII, Navy is Frances and Betty. Dive bomber only for IJN = Judy (late versions preffered of course) and 1e IJN bomber = Grace which is pretty much the best overall anti ship weapon all around.

Night fighters, I'll more or less take what I get as night fighters are only needed to be "present" in the air, they won't be killers anyway, no matter which night fighter you use, tried that often enough in sand box runs.

Recons, Dinah versions, no IJN recons needed, those will just train pilots as there are more than enough Army recons.

Float planes = Jake

Patrols = Emily

Transports = IJA Topsy, IJN Emily and Tina

of course all in sufficient numbers, especially fighters and bombers as usual. Not going to produce the tens of thousands aircraft that were produced in real life but I will only produce aircraft I can actually use, which is the point where we are back at playing a game. There won't be anything that would really surprise MrKane, lucky die rolls might get me an aircraft perhaps a month earlier than one could expect it but that's about it.

Having the hindsight of having played the Allied there is nothing that could really surprise me either, of course the P-47 will be dominating everything, usually getting a 4:1 if not better depending on the situation. But I've also shred P-47 at the opposite rate at the right times (not that many times of course [;)]). As you can see, we will never fight this game at 1ft lower than our fighters can go so it's all about height. Until late 44 to mid 45 I really only fear the P-47 and the Spit VIII, the rest can be dealt with. This of course doesn't mean we will routinely shoot Corsairs, Hellcats or Lightnings out of the sky but those we can fight at acceptabel losses.

As to your question, no, I am not going to R&D something just for fun. MrKane is just going to be a too tough opponent that I will be able to afford that, that's something I'm clearly experiencing already.

Not any more.

yeah, somehow I can't resist the ranting when going through the combat reports seeing what has gone wrong and where the dice failed [;)] nice to have you aboard again

agree with the low level attacks but it still will net you more hits on ships (no matter how intense the flak) than going at "reasonable" heights because also at a couple of thousand ft flak will shred you so at 100ft you will still see 20 skill pilots scoring hits when they wouldn't score within 1000yards of a ship from 4000ft for example. Bombing bases, well that's another story because a base can also be hit from 15k or higher, a ship more or less "can't" be hit from that height.

Escort abandons search for sub

lucky xAK the sub missed... needless to say that even in a base hex IJN ASW can't do much at this stage of the game but also that will change over the course of the war... don't expect subs having a real effect, they will of course hit a BB/CA/CV now and then but nothing compared to what happened real life... needless to say I will freak out whenever a succesful attack on one of my capital ships will happen [;)]

Force Z now around the Eastern Celebes... good move MrKane, exactly where I would have sent the Brits too... now if I just could put a torp or two into POW, Repulse is just an oversized heavy cruiser and can usually be dealt with...

that strike didn't go well at all, only getting a 1:1 over the base ending with more losses on our side due to write offs later... the incoming strike suffered from the Cap actually diving on the sweeper which was far from nice to see... still even with nearly 130 fighters on CAP it only took two Zero sweeps to see halve of the second main sweep not encountering an enemy fighter over the base... as mentioned a thousand times in all my games, the effect of the dive is just too much as the dive always puts everything upside down (not discounting what a height advantage really means)...

if you look at the losses which aren't a great thing for the IJ of course it still would only take five such days and the Allied would have pretty much run out of Buffalos, H81-A3 (with the earlier losses) and P-40... leaves the USAAF with the P-39 in the pool and some crap that can't be used... what we have sent in today isn't nearly what we could send in... of course there is also the valid Allied thinking that the earlier you kill an IJN pilot the better but when it comes down to me playing the IJ I'm normally as fine with a 70/70 fighter pilot like I'm fine with a better skilled one... just give a 70/70 fighter pilot an upgunned fighter and the height advantage and you'll produce aces at will...

what strikes me are all those attacks from ahead or astern as these got a hit chance of something like 1% no matter if bombs or torpedoes... really often I see 30-40% of huge strikes being completely wasted due to these attacks... in this case the small strike fully attacked from ahead without a chance to hit something...

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Allied Deliberate attack

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Allied forces CAPTURE Kuala Lumpur !!!

Combat modifiers
Attacker:

Assaulting units:
6th Indian Brigade
15th Indian Brigade
109th RAF Adv Base Force

those two Indian bgds will never reach Singapore... there should also be that other Indian bgd from Kuantan that had to march over the trail so if I'm not mistaken neither of the two possible Indian Divs should be able to recombine at Singapore which is a huge blow to the defense there... just a big difference to have 800av out of two full divisions or 800av out of all sort of small units up to bgd size... means the two Australian bgds at Singers will be the main threat...

Ground combat at Mersing (51,82)

Japanese assault odds: 14 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Mersing !!!

Combat modifiers
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(-)

Assaulting units:
Yokosuka 1st SNLF /1

MrKane keeps abandoning bases so we just keep taking the empty places for free... will land quite an Army at Mersing in the coming days, with all the fighters at Singapore I wouldn't be surprised to see the Allied trying a big nav attack against my ships but even if I see a good chance to score hits it would be very costly... if the Allied just keep sitting at Singers, then the base will just be invaded at the cost of some more disabled squads which isn't a problem if not my whole Army gets chewed up due to some whopping die roll... trying to hit my fleet would be the only reason for me that would make it worthwhile sending all available frontline fighters to Singapore... just for building the fort level one or perhaps even two pts higher doesn't make it worth it for me as the rest of the frontline is now void of Allied fighter cover...

OOOOPS! That was shocking for a short moment even if there wouldn't have been a real threat... just don't like seeing CV showing up in a surface engagement... surprising it was as the CVL were following a big SAG that actually should clear the path...

no idea how many times I've tried to intercept that convoy that was sitting in a base hex NE of Mindanao... had my SAGs even parked in the same hex and just never had an engagement triggering... cost me a couple of Betties to flak but today the convoy was shot up pretty badly... the two IJN destroyers retire without a single 12.7cm shell or any torpedoes left... not much left to shoot at anyways... [:D] there shouldn't be much left to catch in the DEI now even though we get sightings of convoys a little further South in the Manado/Ternate area but those could as well be SAGs as I am sure also Force Z is around somewhere... Boise and that USN CA, an old USN CL, old USN DD and the dangerous Brit light cruisers accompied by destroyers are also still somewhere around in the DEI and it doesn't seem they want to move into range of any IJN bomber... [:D]

RE: Rise of an Empire - Mr. Kane (A) vs castor troy (J)

Post by crsutton »

I think Mr. Kane has already made a mistake with his air defense of Singapore. You just can't trade fighters that way in the early months as the Allies. Plus, the changes to AA alter the whole equation. Sometimes you just should let AA defend your base. With the new patch my AA units just bled Japanese bombers over Singapore. Probably shot down 100 or more in the time it took him to reduce the fortress. His fighters should be safely in the rear. The Allies AA assets at Singapore will do fine until the supply burns out. Even the lowly Japanese AA if committed in enough numbers will make air bombing of a strong point problematical for the Allies.

Before the patch, I did not even really bother with my AA units. Never bought any out of the US. Post patch and I am making use of them all. They really help the Allies in 42 survive Japanese air superiority.

I'm still not sure what all those fighters are meant for at Singapore. Like mentioned before, if I won't be completely surprised by a move of my sneaky opponent or completely mistaken, the only effect all those fighters at Singapore will make is having one or at best two fort levels higher than with the usual bombing now and then. Only the dice gods can really make a difference in the battle when thinking about what I am going to move over the river when the assault on Singapore starts.

that's the start of some serious night fighting this turn... I've moved one BB SAG into the area around the Eastern Celebes and the second one with the two Fusos South of Mindanao... this one here is under command of Tanaka and reacts towards this USN cruiser TF that is lead by CA Houston... well, not much to say about the battle, there was a lot of shooting but nothing else happened... Marblehead takes one damaging hit but that's it... especially the IJN destroyers perform poor once more...

looks like this turn answers my earlier question where all the enemy cruisers and destroyers that start the war in the DEI are... not sure if the enemy SAGs are also reacting but there suddenly seem to be quite a lot of TFs around the area of Tanaka... even though Boise is sent to Davy Jones after taking two 40cm hits through the belt I am again very unhappy about my destroyers... heck, never have seen IJN destroyers do so bad like they did in this campaign so far... they nearly never hit and if they do they score a superstructure hit that does nothing... in fact the old USN DD did better here as one 4" shell hits Tadeshiwa and does serious damage, which is only topped by the collision of Tadeshiwa with another IJN destroyer... if Mutsu wouldn't have sunk Boise in this engagement it would have been a total flop so far...

it's not over yet... while Tanaka got the highest skills in naval warfare he is also the most aggressive commander and at this point I am not sure if it was a good idea to put him in command of a BB group... we engage the TF around Houston and Marblehead again and a knife fight at really close range evolves with both sides taking hits but once again the USN DD are only taking superstructure hits not damaging them... [8|] no damage in return, the whole engagement was a waste of shells... at this point I was hoping to see my BB group retiring East...

my hopes to see Tanaka retiring were dashed and after three rounds of fighting we now engage a British light cruiser force which really was something I was not amused about as the battle starts at 1000 yards and I already saw several British torpedoes slamming into my battleships... Tanaka crosses the T but I've never been sure of that really being an advantage in the game or if this is really working right... Nagato sinks DD Van Ghent with accurate gun fire but the rest of the IJN task force completely underperforms with the destroyers just making a joke out of themselfes again... I was so glad to see the range increasing and the batlle not even lasting 1/3 of the earlier engagements and Tanaka then ordered his ships to move out of the area leaving the two earlier damaged DD behind...

now the question where is Force Z... if POW and company would have shown up at this stage I could have seen that ending in a disaster...

I wanted to move my invasion group into Mersing earlier but due to spotting enemy mine layers earlier there was no doubt MrKane dropped mines at the base... here we go, there are plenty of them but one day should be enough to clear the base and move in to unload...

Morning Air attack on Singapore , at 50,84

Estimated time to target is 15 minutes

Aircraft Attacking:

Looking at the replay I was more confident then the report looks like as the Oscars damaged a high number of enemy fighters forcing them out of the fight... not achieving a lot of kills is common for the completely undergunned Oscars but usually one sees quite some write offs and op losses later on...

spotted a big convoy at Cebu, no idea what it was doing there, if I'm not mistaken those ships don't start out at Manila so it might be an evacuation or resupply attempt for the Philipines, probably a supply run... we have spotted at least a dozen ships in this convoy, am going to move a cruiser SAG into the area to catch them as one can't rely on the IJNAF to completely deny the enemy of these waters...

Aircraft Attacking:
19 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 30940 feet

a second Oscar sweep that does slightly better as the Ic at least carries a little better armament... still when looking at the air losses at the end it was a total flop as it seems nearly none of the at least two dozen damaged Allied fighters were in unrepairable state or lost to ops... the fact that we flew from Mersing and the fragile Oscars that were damaged pretty much all crashed made this a day that surely will make the enemy think it was well worth bringing his fighters to Singapore... soon we will have an airfield for sweeps two hexes away from Singapore and then we will just grind them down...
