We did give the empire quite vast room to play around. Also, allies are doing no strategic bombing, so his economy is intact at this point except for fuel, which he admitted is making him consider beginning the controlled collapse

empire may have more air replacements than allies do at this point. My esteemed opponent is not revealing that. He seems to have an endless supply of airframes and pilots.

ORIGINAL: Capt. Harlock
Massive air losses on both sides, few hits

I assume that, since this scenario puts Japanese industry on steroids, they can replace the losses as easily as the Allies can?

Miri Sept 14, 1945

Post by topeverest »

Empire has been flashing 2 CV task forces around Borneo with around 900 aircraft, which I assume are fast and slow platforms. he had been doing this as I reduced the Marshalls with my main American CV task forces. meanwhile the British and a small American CV task force teamed up and drove into the lower DEI providing support to cover the Java landings. From there I CV raided Balikpapan and Miri sequentially. Several turns ago, I thought he might be itching for a fight with the Balikpapan CV support force, which is materially larger than the CVL and CVE force that went after Miri.

In any event, the first turn's raid at Miri was completely successful, and I decided to stay a second day, inching a 100 miles further east in the event the empire CV's popped out of a hiding space - - - which they did.

The allies opened this opera with the first strike, but alas - it was uncoordinated! This is the first time since 1942 that my CV strikes were uncoordinated. An inauspicious start to be sure. Empire CAP entirely. My air compliment was chewed to bits.

Notice how the Braracuda bombers dropped from different altitudes despite having exactly the same mission.

Second empire CV punch - INCLUDES KAMI's but these probably the accidental type, because this was an attack that came from his carriers.

To end the morning phase 36 empire bombers and TBD's fly in in 4 attacks unescorted and are eaten alive.

Later in the combat sequence 40+ british Barracuda and Avengers do the same and suffer the fate of Torpedo 8. Not even Ensign Gay survived that maelstrom!

A lesson for IJN players - never tangle with a nation that knows how to make very good working torpedoes!

Not a lot of noteworthy action going on.

The allies wiped out the Kusai Island garrison after nearly a game month of siege.

American Carriers should be at Sorong within a game week - and ready to launch an offensive, either to cut off DEI, Attack Philippiines, or attack towards Mariana's. I probably will cut off DEI

In China, the enemy massed just enough troops in Canton to make an assault long and deleterious. The goal is to get a port and cut any transport across asia. So I will go for another port. I will link the rails so I can push more supply and troops into the area.

In Russia, the Japs have air supremacy over Vladivostok and outer vicinity. I am still working on bringing up troops to take the same cities in Russia. What they did historically in a couple weeks, I still haven't done in six game weeks! I am getting much closer, bt could be another 3-4 game weeks before east and west are put together.

On Borneo, the enemy is using Balikpapan and Miri again. I have to raid again, but the minor CV forces are replenishing.

Subs final revenge

Post by topeverest »

So an EBOAT forced an American sub to the surface after a successful single torpedo hit on a mega AP tf with a mega AK. What happened next is the stuff of legends. Nice coding here!

A gun duel started, and the sub, which would sink put 4 more torpedoes into the mega AP and sunk it - and then put a torpedo into the AK and then emptied her torps towards the E, (those missed).

I tend to put two subs in a task force, and as frequently occurs, the second sub then attacked and put the remaining AK at the bottom

Very exciting.

Very nice sub attack! You must have provided one very aggressive skipper to Scabbardfish! (BTW, shouldn't she have been paired with Swordfish?)

This combat illustrates very well why I have been advocating for Allied subs to operate in pairs. I have seen many similar dual attacks in my games but none quite so spectacular. BZ! [&o]

For many games I have been doing two sub task forces and playing with aggressive and passive commanders.

I believe that the aggressive ones are the best. I think points spent to change sub commanders to more aggressive reap large rewards via the Silent War.

Finally something to actually type about - - -

Crippled CVE from Miri fight will make Oosthaven this turn. No further combat ships lost after the day of CV combat at Miri. Empire continues to use both Miri and Balikpapan to their fullest potential. Hopefully within 30 days I can have that at an end.

Java fighting progresses, and Allies hold 9 of the bases to the empire's 6. It is a race to Soerabaya to shut down that heavy industry.

Ruskies begin reduction of Chanchung and soon will begin two more cities. These are the big battles that will occur. Once the enemy loses these three hexes, the AV of the Manchukuo garrison will be spent.

Invasions are underway (none yet landed) for Tarawa, ternate, and Celebes near Makassar. Manadao invasion will begin loading in several days

It is unlikely the empire has any more forces on Java other than the 25K in Surabaya. About 80K total troops were on the island at the start of the invasions. Allies have about 250K and 200 aircraft, so the outcome is not in doubt.

Here is that titanic battle at Changchun. Units need to rest this turn as some units are red supply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Changchun (106,41)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 321290 troops, 7565 guns, 7032 vehicles, Assault Value = 12374
