What is the best way to intercept Torpedo bombers?

The Betties always drop to 200 feet before make attack, but they approach the target from 6000 feet. So, should the CAP be set at 2000 feet or 10,000 feet?

10k works well enough for me.

But also be aware that the Betty's will be much less likely to attack your TF in the first place, if you have -ANY- CAP at all, so it's almost moot. If the Betty's are well escorted, they MIGHT attack your TF, but again, the Betty's will almost always go for an undefended TF (or none at all), if there there CAP around.

I have seen many times my Betties and Nells go for Allied ships docked at bases under heavy CAP without escort and get slaughtered especially when they have high morale (98-99).
They even go for SCs or PTs under heavy CAP.
It's very frustrating when I see an injured Allied CA limping back to base and want to finish it off by my Betties and Nells and see they go for SCs and PTs under heavy CAP and get slaughtered.

Woa!

I want a copy of your game file for my machine!

I can't keep Betties alive for nothing due to running into CAP when easy targets are out about right under their noses.

THis is why IMHO that you should have the option to pick (1) What air groups go on a mission, (2) Pick the Primary target.

This should be incorporated into WITP if it already hasn't.

Please Please Please don't start that thread again.

As to the difference in Betty behaviour, have you both got the same version?

The best way to intercept torpedo aircraft.

1.) Send taunt by email

2.) reply by deploying Bettys

3.) Bettys meet rude reception over Allied base that poped up SUDDENLY after judicious use of magic seebee pixie dust.

4.) repeat as necessary.

Presto.....soon you have dealt effectively with all those torpedo bombers.

You should have been capturing those base dots. That allied base would not have suddenly appeared on your doorstep if you had taken the time to capture the base dots.

And please send more Betty's. :D

Well soorrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I was busy processing all those POW's you left from your futile attempt to deny New Gineau to the future Empire of Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp.

I got your Bettys.......if you build it......they will come. :D

Ha! It worked. That entire contretemps at Wau was designed solely to focus your attention on New Guinea while the real threat was developing at Irau. Heck, you were so focused on NG that I don't think you even noticed that I had an airbase at Irau for two turns after it was built.

As an Allied player, I certainly do hate the IJN 2e bombers, but again, as long as something is flying overhead, they pretty much leave my TFs alone. I've seen them fly all the way from Rabaul to hit an non-CAP supply convoy running between Townsville and Cairns. Worked over my freighters pretty good. But a half squadron of ThrowAways (Wirraways) flying overhead, and I've never had that problem again. Even convoys shuttling to PM, as long as they're under CAP from Cairns and PM, they're good. As the TF get closer to PM, my opponent can attempt to saturate the CAP with his own land-based fighters, and his 2e bombers will attack under these circumstances. But again, if I have CAP, and outside of escort range, I don't see them over my TFs very often.

But that was my "objective" during the last month of my PBEM game, was to reduce my opponent's abilty to launch his 2e bombers. He had actually been able to push then as far south as Lunga and Buna, and was hitting convoys alont the coast of Australia and aroudn Luganville. I probably lost 15 merchants the previous month in "mundane" convoys, because his 2e bombers were having a field day. My fighters were stressed, just trying to fly CAP for the more critical convoys, but still, 15 merchants in a month was unacceptable. So I took the offensive and coordinated my bombardment TFs and own 4e bombers vs. his AFs. It's taken a month, but I've beaten his 2e bombers back to Rabaul, and all of his "front line" AFs are unusable in any capacity (so they're not providing escort fighters either). But I had to clear out his 2e bombers before being able to begin conducting offensive amphibious operations (and the resupply of those ops).

Did it ever happen to you that a small group of Betties penetrate your heavy CAP and never got touched by fighters? The sole message would be, Air-Air combat over. No engagement despite 20 fighters in the air. It happens frequently to me.

Yes, I've occasionally been flying Wirraway CAP over transport TF's in Cairns or Cooktown when Betty's or Nells have attacked straight through the CAP without being touched.

Mabe it has something to do with weather or CAP altitude.
I had the CAP at 7000 so that should have been ok.

It could and did happen in the war that CAP didn't sight bombers but shouldn't happen often if defenders have radar.

UV has the most sophisticated air model I have ever seen - and I have seen professional ones.

A Betty MIGHT attack WITHOUT escort against a target defended by CAP - it is a function of the unit morale and the commander charisma ratings. This is usually a bad idea, but I have seen em hit targets, and sometimes then you think it was a good idea. I see this more than you do because I put Betty's and Nells forward only rated 95 to 99 - so I get a lot of attacks!!! I also know how to build em up that high quickly.
