that's today's highlight as our cruisers that were ordered South to engage this fleeing convoy catch it the second day during bright daylight... the result was predictable... not knowing about Force Z and no other target in the area the cruisers are now heading back to Babeldaob... like at Singapore I'd guess that was an attempt to resupply the troops cut off in the Philipines...

guess one doesn't see that very often in a PBEM [:D] the natural answer to the MrKane's fighter stack at Singapore is a BB/CA bombardment... Allied players often feel too safe sitting behind Singapore's coast defense when the only real threat are the mines there that usually hit a DD or two but of course we had the maximum outcome seeing 3 hits on BB plus 2 on my cruisers... the mine field was spotted already so the chance to actually see that many hits was quite low... oh well, no ship is near danger of sinking, the cruisers will be repaired in no time while the BB will sit in a repair yard for a month at best... those damn mine hits did achieve something though as only 2 BB and 2 CA were lobbing shells into Singapore... not nearly as many airfield hits from the 2 BB as I expected but we torch a good dozen fighters on the ground and damage many more, recon shows the airfield 50% damaged but that's an exaggeration... guess MrKane didn't expect me doing this... [:D]

if that bombardment isn't enough to scare the Allied fighters I can repeat that any time shuffling in heavy units... for those that haven't engaged such CD before, don't be too scared as heavy bombardment TF don't have to really be afraid of the CD... the couple of 15" guns there only fired a handful of shots all missing, only Atago was hit by 6" shells of which many penetrated her tower armor which wasn't nice to see as I expected the heavy cruisers to be immune to anything up to the 9.2" guns... don't try to do an amphib landing here though, an invasion would be shot to pieces...

Massive explosion on CL Nagara not really...

now that was really surprising... after taking out that Dutch convoy yesterday my SAG cruises along Mindanao's coast and suddenly US dive bombers are reported... dive bombers??? must be misidentified with a bunch of float planes coming in low... no, dive bombers!!!

a 1000lb bomb penetrates through Nagara's thin deck armor and I expect the ship to take heavy damage but all we see is 17 sys dam... so how on Earth are those Vindicators getting to Mindanao? Very nice move! Makes operating cruisers in the area more dangerous than expected but there shouldn't be a real need at this stage anyway...

At Rangoon just bring the bombers in lower. At 10k they're not hitting. Try 8k. Then 6k. See what works.

Nice bombardment on Singers. Way to nervous about mines, guns, MTBs, etc to do that myself. I think your mine hits are abut right for that location, considering it's sheltered area and massive defenses. Still, you gave the order and got what you wanted. nicely done. [&o]

Yeah, bombardment forces should really never worry about CD guns. I had six batteries of six 6 inch guns guarding Calcutta and he just started hitting them with CAs. Wiped them all out eventually. However, passing those guns is a different matter. My opponent accidentally ran past the hex with the CD guns up to Calcutta and the guns shot him to bits passing up and down the river. However, a direct bombardment of the hex containing CD units is a cake walk. Infuriating because it should be very deadly.

Actually, MR. Kane's gambit with his small CA, DD forces vs your old BBs could have resulted in disaster for you. The moonlight was zero and some of the ships were British. Slow BBs in low viability in my experience will eat torpedoes. You could have easily lost the whole force with Mr. Tanaka in command. I think it was a pretty good and aggressive move on his behalf.

already too much flak there if not really heavy compared to later stages of the game

Singapore got something like 500 mines at start, considering we have "spotted" the minefield earlier (by hitting mines) the 5 hits on my BB/CA are more than one can usually expect in the game IMO. Mines, like CD really comes into play when it comes down to invasions.

absolutely agree, very nice move to have all those cruisers in that area (only the obsolete Dutch ones didn't show up). I was using my BB due to Force Z. I preferre using heavy cruisers but I don't want them to run into Force Z, especially at daylight. Same with the enemy cruisers, if we would have reacted in daylight they would have probably been shot to bits. Losing all of my SAG to those enemy cruisers would have been the worst outcome and probably unlikely but a BB taking a torp could have happened, like seeing my heavies and especially the disappointing DD hitting more.

thanks for the info. Range 40?!? [X(] I've been playing this game quite some time now but I've never noticed the extreme range of those dive bombers.

SNLF /1 & SNLF /2; I always try to use my paratroops in big chunks for air drops & never drop with a splinter. I realize you are up against the A team here however, but you were complaining about 100' runs, to me this is fairly gamey, but obviously you are not violating a HR or you wouldn't be doing it.

all goes that isn't violating a hr, I've kept stuff behind my back until I got a picture of how the game will evolve.

As to the para drops, what do you want me to do to take all those abandoned Allied bases? If one realizes how a retreat or fall back in good order looks like, there wouldn't be hundreds of miles void of Allied troops on Malaya. All the Allied are trying is to move stuff back on turn one even without me exploiting the game with a landing there on turn two or let alone on turn one. One side acting unrealistic, the other side only in need of goats to take the empty bases that could be defended by that myriad of small Allied units on Malaya but the Allied commander preferred having everything running to Singapore instead. I'm not taking halve of Australia with my paras, all I do is taking bases that are deliberately abandoned by the Allied. And if you ask me to drop hundreds of paras in one go, well, there is only one Tina squadron that can reach Malaya. HR or not, I could argue about the para drops if I drop 20 paras on occupied bases to stop strat movement for one turn but all those paras are doing is taking abandoned bases that had no reason to be immidiately being abandoned.

You are in luck Castor. Abandoning bases instead of leaving at least a scratch force to defend them is very bad policy. It will enable you to rail in reinforcements very fast from the North, expediting the capture of Singapore...

Yeah my attitude is that it is perfectly OK to take an abandoned base near or behind the front lines with a fragment. Just housekeeping. Only restriction we follow is that if you are parachuting behind enemy lines it has to be a whole unit. And, if you can't send the whole unit due to transport limitations. The remaining fragment cannot be dropped elsewhere until the unit is intact again. American engineer units with para units won't drop so we do not count them.

true and that's what I'm going to do, even though I could also land those reinforcements at Mersing easily. At the moment the rail line is blocked as there are those cut off Indian bgds sitting at Kuala Lumpur but troops are on the way coming from the South to clear the base to have the rest of the Army railing in from the North.

we take Wake without any losses which was really nice... I hate thes atoll invasions as they can go terrible wrong even against nearly no opposition and even during the IJ amphib bonus... and we didn't have KB near so both our heavy cruisers as well as the amphib convoy and it's light cruiser escort were in danger to run into something like a pair of carriers or some BB from Pearl Harbour... we only had subs covering the approach but we didn't pick up any enemy activity so all was fine... as the Allied player one thing I immidiately do if the IJN isn't attacking PH is sending some reinforcements to Wake but the Allied commander thankfully didn't...

all goes that isn't violating a hr, I've kept stuff behind my back until I got a picture of how the game will evolve.

You make excellent points.[:)]

This can be easy exploited. You could abandon a bunch of bases and wait for your opponent to paradrop. Then nail the airfield once they take the base so you can no longer pick the troops back up then nail the troops until they're a wreck or wiped out (assuming a land-locked base, but if it's on the coast you can just nail the paras from the air right away also).

Why should there be any limitations on paras taking empty bases? If he wants to defend them he could also leave a fragment to prevent fragmentary paradrops. [:)]
