OT: Movie Days of the Past

Hello All.

School is out for the summer so the Cochran Clan is watching movies periodically. Thought it might be fun to get some people's perspectives. We've watched two John Wayne Classics in War Wagon and Flying Leathernecks.

Would like to ask what people enjoy watching of the older films? John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, others? Toss in your favorite Wayne Film. Favorite War Film. Favorite Sci Fi/Fantasy Film.

Both Eastwood and Wayne are top notch but I prefer The Duke over Clint.

A favorite of mine is "In Harm's Way".
If you're not familiar with it its setting is in the Pacific in the early part of WW 2.

John Wayne and Client Eastwood, can't go wrong with either, both very different types of "cowboys" but icons the same

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance staring Wyane, some other guys named Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin and Woody Strode also try acting in it [;)]; excellent movie one of my fav Wayne movies

The Searchers & The Shootist starting Wayne,

The Final Countdown staring Kirk Douglas. If you enjoy history and science fiction this is one for you Alternate History movie, Douglas commands a 1980's Carrier that goes back in time on eve of Pearl Harbor. I like the acting and story, they act and ask questions like people and Military Officers would, "what do they do?" stop Pearl Harbor, wait then fight, do nothing, alter or not alter history?

Some amazing foreign war films which mostly get ignored.

I was totally blown away by the German film "I was nineteen." about a young German expat returning to Germany as a Russian officer as the war closes. Great movie and all the equipment is original. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061802/

"The Beast" about a lost Russian tank takes place during the Russian occupation of Afganistan. It puts the rather crappy "Fury" to shame. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_beast_1988/

"No Man's Land" Takes place during the Bosnian/Serbian conflict. Intense and well crafted. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_beast_1988/

I am taking you out of the "box" here but these are all great films and merit watching.

Watch this gem: Little Giant; Costello is a naive country boy, Abbott plays 3 roles. Not your normal A&C movie.

I'd like to mention some truly great actors, to begin with Robert Ryan. A couple of examples are with another outstanding actor, Spencer Tracy in "Bad Day at Black Rock" or with the great Burl Ives in "Day of the Outlaw" as just two examples.

Great actors? There's a thought. Wow - so many.

As a kid growing up I think James Stewart and Cary Grant were incredibly watchable actors.

Who else? Anthony Hopkins, Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Denzil Washington, Ralph Fiennes, Kevin Spacey.... so many quality actors.

But favourite actors of modern times? I would go with two:

Best all rounder, comedy and straight roles - Tom Hanks

Most underrated actor - possibly ever - Robert Downey Jr. His performance in Chaplin was incredible.




EDIT: Sorry I forgot Ben Affleck - he's my number 1 obviously. He was just great in that Pearl Harbor film. Anyone seen it?

I watched it over Memorial Day Weekend with my 17 year old daughter. Even she liked it.

Beneath Hill 60 (WWI near Ypres) - unusual since it's about the 1st Australian Tunneling Company: the monument to those soldiers near Hill 60 has a couple of bullet holes in it from the nearby battle in 1940.

Another sort of war movie: "The Wipers Iimes" (BBC production for Region 2 but available from PBS in Region One format). The reprints of the "paper" are cool too.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. My little warspites were playing at the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and we took some time out to see some of the memorials and cemeteries.
