On the upcoming turn, NavSY will be -2 as a 4-point E just completed on 3-23-43.

MerSy will be back to +0, as I turned off a 30-point TK that is 9 days from completion due to another one farther back in the queue beginning production.

Current daily production numbers:

ARM: 200 (450 off)
VEH: 225 (25 off)
NAV: 1608
MER: 462

A/C: ~21 engines' worth (27 engines' worth per day turned off!)
ENG: 52 engines per day (8 engines per day turned off)

I may have overbuilt my Ha-35 factories, as I have turned off 190/mo and the pools are still trending slightly upwards. The reason for this is because I have reached the end of the A6M line that uses the Ha-35, and am now just maintaining my pool levels. I am R&Ding the Oscar-IV, and it will arrive in about 2 months, but once I have about 400 of those built beyond those in the pools I plan to curtail production even further. I am loathe to switch the Ha-35 production to something else as it would cost supplies for me to get anything out of it.

NavSY, filtered for the stuff I care about (many CHa-type SCs are halted at 10 days out, as they cost 1 point each - but they are next to worthless):

MerSY. Note all the stuff I'm not building. In 11 days when Kaiyo comes out, I'll turn that 30-point TK back on until it is completed...and then decide what to do with the other points. Probably just turn off MerSY factories.

Strat Map - March 23, 1943

New Caledonia: recently taken by Bullwinkle. I rushed KB there as fast as I could, but I was too late leaving Singapore several weeks prior. I had to wait a day for refueling as his CVs were about, and when I arrived for the strike at the ships at Noumea, the base had been his for 2 days already. Nearly all valuable shipping had left, but I did manage to sink CL St Louis (probable) and 2 AMCs, as well as a bunch of xAPs and some smaller craft. We netted about 300-400 VPs in sunk ships.

11th Air Fleet will survive as a fragment at Tulagi, but I was unable to lift any other unit fragments out of Noumea. The 16th Division will have to be bought back in its entirety. I will buy this one back as it's my first division loss, and the China Army isn't freed up yet, but I will be more judicious in my future buybacks.

I also lost 2 SNLF units and 1 JNAF unit, and all 3 have been bought back as their cost is miniscule to rebuild, given that they are almost entirely squads.

New Guinea:
Bullwinkle is raiding Moresby and Horn Island almost daily. I have had to abandon Horn's airfield and am unsure if I will be able to base there again. I was too slow to get fighters and supply in place. I am hoping to keep Moresby open, simply to keep him occupied, but I am losing the war of attrition in airframes. His bombers are shooting down my Tojos and A6M3a's left and right. I have Nicks there in the upcoming turn, but am not very optimistic as he is also sweeping with P-38s on occasion.

Chrome gobbled my post again. I don't even remember what I wrote. I have to kick Chrome - it doesn't even save me on RAM like I thought it might at first, it's just as bad as Firefox if not worse.

In any case...this is my global chart. General trends:

+10,000 supply/day. Don't know if this is good, bad, or middling for this point of the war.

Had been +5K HI/day, but am down temporarily with short term increases in MerSY and aircraft production. A/c production might remain at these levels as his OOB expands...

Refineries will begin to run dry in Japan in about 440 days, at present rate of usage. However, we'll probably be cut off in some way before then... am looking at curtailing HI production slightly when this begins to happen so that Japan doesn't run out of fuel before 1944 is even over. Actual Oil deficit on Japan is -8030/day, but average rate of decrease has been -2600/day with my convoys coming in.

At present levels of production, we have enough Fuel in Japan for 292 days. We're only averaging +2000 Fuel/day (meaning about +5500 when deficit of -3500 is accounted for) as I am not all that diligent about ships refueling here. Speaking of, that doesn't account for the fuel used as my ships refuel here. With lots of troop convoys heading out recently, I've been using the Fuel. It's worth noting that 40 days ago, I had 3.5M Fuel in Japan. On this turn, I have 3.48M, so I am more or less stagnant right now.

Up through August 19. Am doing lots of organizing for defense, and am running into a problem: I need to upgrade my LCUs. Can someone give me a rundown of what Japanese HQs will upgrade the TOE of LCUs, or a link to a thread that lists them? [:D]

Reason I'm asking is because I thought there were some HQs that aren't "top level" HQs (HQn or HQy instead of HQ in the game, for example) that for some reason will count as a command HQ to do the upgrade. Such as 4th Fleet, 5th Fleet, etc... is that correct? Or am I stuck with just CEA Army, General Defense, Southern Army, etc.? Man would that suck.

A quick search of all topics in main forum/war room for "Command HQ" hasn't given me any joy. Looking in the editor, I see ones that have a purple highlight to them for some reason. What's up with that? Does that mean those HQs can upgrade? The ones with purple are:

General Defence Army
Kwantung Army
Southern Army
5th Fleet
North China Area Army
China Expeditionary Army
Burma Area Army
2nd Area Army
8th Area Army
Formosa Army
14th Area
Korea Army
Combined Fleet
4th Fleet
Southern Fleet
Southeast Area Fleet
14th Army
15th Army
16th Army
25th Army

Others that are white are 3rd Fleet, 5th Fleet, 6th Fleet, Southwest Area Fleet, and all the air HQs... plus all the other Fleet/Army HQs.

The bolded above work as Command HQs for upgrades, etc. Also allow torps at bases they inhibit also (not to their command limit), and might not get noticed in the same way an air HQ would be by Allied intel.

I know several of us seem to use the 5th Fleet (Northeast Area Fleet) to sail around since it's the least necessary at its starting point in Ominato. Mine is doing this right now. Works to 18 hexes for upgrades.

ONLY those 4? That's it?

I guess I have a test in this turn I just downloaded. I'm seeing if one of my JNAF units at Etorofu will upgrade. It probably will not. 1st and 3rd Fleets are located there right now.

8th JNAF AF Unit's TOE was upgraded to JNAF Airfield 43 at Etorofu

HQ situation:
Northeast Area Fleet (nearest "actual" Command HQ) is at Paramushiro, range 9 but distance 12
5th Fleet is at Ominato, range 1 but distance 10
1st Fleet at Etorofu
3rd Fleet at Etorofu
Northern Army at Sapporo, range 5 but distance 8

Those are the nearest HQs. Others are farther away.

So near as I can tell, just the regular naval HQ allowed for upgrading the TOE. Got some other units upgraded this turn, but just devices, not the TOE themselves.

It says HQ, Command in the description popup when you click on a Command HQ.

Northeast Area Fleet upgraded the TOE...not the others. Range is quite long x2 for toe upgrades I think.

Sure, but... is that how TOEs upgrade? I always thought it was via command HQs only, and that they provided other bonuses (bigger command range, second check for HQ bonus in combat if prepped for the target, and more frequent replacements). But this turn seems to show it's not just "HQ, Command" units that do it.

You were at rest less than 19 hexes away from a Command HQ. I don't see how you infer that the normal HQs upgraded the TOE for you.[&:]

Oh, I thought it had to be within the Command HQ's command range, not a static 19 hexes. Followup question: why isn't it 20/are we sure it isn't 20? [:D]

Seems my reading comprehension skills are maybe lacking.

Isn't 4th Fleet a command HQ as well? I had the impression it is. In the unit list, it's listed as HQn, but in its title it says "Command HQ", exactly like 5th Fleet and SE Fleet.

Right, so I just don't get the upgrade stuff. I did another test.

4th Base Force, at Truk, needed a TOE upgrade. Southeast Area Fleet is at Truk. 4th Fleet was moved to Guam. 8th Fleet is at Truk. None of these are listed as Command HQs, yet the unit upgraded. I'm convinced there are HQs that allow upgrading that aren't Command HQs. Does anyone know what they are?

Interesting happenings. The invasions begin in earnest, it seems. I've already lost Luganville and the Solomons up through Munda, but I decided I didn't want to waste assets defending them. However, now he's coming into the Gilberts. Like the Solomons, I don't want to waste assets, however I do want to sting where possible.

Image

Here's my issue... I don't want to commit my 8 CVs and get an even trade. I think that works in his favor. From combat reports with his CAP, there are at least 3 USN fleet CVs plus the Illustrious, and from the most recent turn's combats there are at least 2 CVLs.

VF-1, -3, -6, -71, and -16 all present. So that's Yorktown, Enterprise, Wasp, Essex (16?), and I forget which ship VF-1 is on. 3 FAA units with Martlets - that's Illustrious. VRF-6F also present, with VMF-221, so some CVEs also it seems. My search keeps getting shot down, but I am getting enough to get decent DLs on them. Here's the rundown:

August 23, I sight them 8 hexes from Tarawa. 36 Zeroes and 12 Bettys mostly die to get the intel on the CAP composition. 1 torpedo dudded on an AK, so I know he's going somewhat slow. I sortie 14 subs from Truk (some to lay mines at Makin/Tabit as Tarawa is already a goner if he's going there), and vector in the few that were already nearby. I've been expecting him to move for this area at some point. In fact, I sniffed his CVs near Baker about a week ago and sent KB from Truk and Rabaul to rendezvous near Kusaie.

August 24, the USN is now 4 hexes out from Tarawa. So he's taking his time and knows he's sighted. I have LBA from Tabit but that's about it. They don't strike today.

August 25 (the most recent combat replay):
ASW attack near Tarawa at 139,128

Japanese Ships
SS I-26, hits 5, heavy damage

Allied Ships
BB Pennsylvania, Torpedo hits 1
BB Maryland
DD Farragut
DD Dale

OK good, one slow BB hurt. There were damage messages, and 2 more of my subs make contact with this TF during the night phase, confirming that Pennsylvania split off in an escort TF. I-26 should live, but RO-62 was lost and RO-61 missed Farragut.

Then:
Sub attack near Tarawa at 137,128

Japanese Ships
SS RO-61

Allied Ships
CV Essex, Torpedo hits 1
CL Montpelier
CLAA San Diego
DD McCook
DD Kalk
DD Braine
DD Conyngham
DD Benham
DD Henley
DD Mustin
Banzai! Maybe not enough to knock her out of the action, but it would weaken her to a KB strike...

Then:
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Tarawa at 138,128

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 13

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 10 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed by flak

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
CVL Belleau Wood, Torpedo hits 1
CVL Princeton

Aircraft Attacking:
13 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo
I had them set to attack at 1000. They flew right under his CAP, awesome! Also got 1 dud. So that's a damaged CV, BB, and CVL. Without that, I wouldn't even be considering.

What I ended up doing is sending KB and the Kongo TF to rendezvous near Namorik. I'll decide in the next turn if I want to do a strike. I am only 9 hexes away from Tarawa, so if he comes past Tarawa there is a risk that my KB will strike... they're locked and loaded for 8 hexes.

About a week, maybe 10 days ago, he used APDs to slip past my search and take Abemama. I think he did this because he had SIGINT on my BB Yamashiro/CL Agano/5 DDs disbanded there as a potential reactionary force to a Tabiteuea invasion. They all lived. Agano and the DDs hunted down the APDs on the 22nd.

Should find out today what he decided to do. My thinking is that I don't want a 1-1 trade with the USN CVs. That would be bad. Katsuragi still needs another month to repair, but I do get the Chitose/Chiyoda out of the yards in 2 days. I am thinking that I would like to try to pounce on some amphibs or something in case he leaves light cover there. He didn't land any air support, but that could be hanging back with the CVLs. At the very least, Essex and Belleau Wood being damaged should slow him up a little while he rotates them out and adjusts his plans. If he breaks them off and stays with the remaining flight decks, I might go for it. My only concern is the risk. In 1942 he was hurting for CVs, but I only sunk 2. He still has Saratoga, Hornet, Yorktown, and Wasp from the pre-war CV collection. Lexington's Hellcats are operating in India, and it appears that he is operating Enterprise's here as extra fighter cover. But it's hard to know for sure.

I guess we'll see where he positions the CVs in the coming turn(s), and whether he stays at Tarawa. My intention had been to hit a landing at Tabiteuea, and not defend in strength anywhere else. It's possible now that he'll bypass Tabiteuea, but I am still able to blanket the sea between the Gilberts and Baker with naval search, while also having reasonable air strength at Tabit (90x Zeroes, 1 air HQ, whatever bombers I fly in). There are about 26.5k supplies there now, which won't be much for a siege if I keep flying. I might need to rescue my division that's there, maybe flying boat it up to Mili.

Haven't quite sent this back yet, but here's what it looks like now. I won't be making a move on his CVs. He doesn't know KB is there, but I think he "knows". DL has been silent, and no sub sightings or sightings of subs via KB's aircraft.

Good decision. The Marshalls are not worth losing a CV I believe. Your subs are doing a good job sending capital ships to the dockyards.
