You got the whole division except for those on Kotohira Maru. Just enough to re-seed the division, but probably six months to rebuild! Good job picking the sweet spot! [&o]

I'm sure there was a bit of celebrating when you watched that replay, along with the obligatory wailing and gnashing of teeth from your opponents. Nice intercept. Even given they can rebuild it will make them much more cautious moving troops around and will slow their pace.

Noumea: I think this leaves the even more beat up 4th Div and a SNLF at Noumea. Jap heavies 480 miles N of Koumac...probably headed for a night bombardment of Noumea. The 3 cruisers aren't going to be enough. Warpsite can't join easily because of the position of the KB. Looks like a night battle is in the works the night of 30/31. The CA need to (in order of priority):

1) Stop a shore bombardment by making the Jap heavies use up their ammo
2) Sink or put out of action the Jap heavies.
3) Not get sunk

If the airfield is intact, Jap cripples will be vulnerable to the SBD's...very Guadalcanalish.

The Captain crumples up the Op Order and tosses it overboard. "Get me the radio operator! The way I read this message the first order is a direct contradiction to the third! It must have been garbled in the transmission or some idiot on the staff doesn't understand what ammunition is used for! If I need to get them to use their ammo then I may very well need permission to get sunk, dag nabbit!"

Another thing I just noticed.

Non Combat: 247 destroyed, 247 disabled

That's too many support squads for a Jap division is it not? Maybe it was a division AND a HQ unit.

Judging from the Southerly route I would say this convoy had embarked from Soerabaja after the capture of Java

Actually it can be very amusing, and having had the opportunity to spend time in Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, and Malibu during my trouble making years I had a once in a lifetime opportunity at such an occasion: The vegan/politically correct folks were complaining about the horror of veal being a choice on the evening's menu and the gourmets were tsking about some detail or another. One of the guests, knowing of my Montana influences, loudly asked me "How do you like your veal?". I thought he was going to have a stroke when I responded "Battered". Didn't have much trouble with small talk after that.

Re: Tom Thumb in WWII(a), he waffled at whether to attack the Japanese landings, heading towards the reported scene, then deciding he needed confirmation so he steered away from the coast, then finally headed back toward the coast. All the waffling gave the IJAAF time to locate and attack before Force Z could do battle with the Kongo BBs covering the landings. To be fair, he may have been waiting for air cover (which arrived just as the last Japanese bomber left), but why would you dally at sea instead of rushing in and getting back to Singers for G&T? Perhaps Tommy boy was afraid they would make him go to Bugis street and perform the dance of the flaming a$$h0les ...again!
