US and New Zealand LCU’s in the Ndeni invasion force completed LCU element upgrades and continue drawing replacement elements to reach full TOE strength. Another 7/18 Sigint entry reports Jap 43rd Infantry Division now located at Tinian, this LCU transferred from the Japanese Home Islands. Current intelligence data indicates 10 identified Japanese LCU (including 43 Division) located on Tinian – other units include 77 Infantry Brigade, 31 Independent Mixed Brigade, 5 South Seas Detachment, 84 Naval Gd, 4 RF Gun Bn, two flak LCU (68 & 71 Field AA Bns), HQ 26 Air Flotilla, 17 JNAF AF Unit. Detected base status at Tinian shows airfield size 4(4), port size 1(1), no visible Japanese forces or activity. The known Japanese garrison at Tinian is in line with my current estimates of Pillager’s garrison sizes at major bases in the Marianas, possibly a slightly smaller garrison than other key Marianas bases (Guam, Saipan). In general, my estimate is that Pillager has most if not all key bases in the Marianas area heavily garrisoned and fortified as much as possible given the ample opportunity he’s had to do so.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon (after raid below) – 60 aircraft (all fighters), no Jap TF, 15 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32), fires 21.

USAAF and RAF 4E bombers launch night city raid against refinery facilities in Rangoon. Detected status of Rangoon base (above) shows no additional damage to refinery facilities from the raid. One RAF Liberator B.VI (ops) lost in the raid. Japanese CAP fighter losses include 6 Ki-43 Oscar (5 air-to-air, 1 ops). Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 981K, fuel 81K.

Current status of Terapo base – 104K supply on hand. Amphibious transport TF’s from NE Australia with supply cargo plus construction engineer and aviation support LCU arrive in Terapo during night movement phase. All LCU aboard the transports have fully completed unloading along with 39K supply. US Escort Carrier force at Terapo with the amphibious TF’s to provide fighter CAP coverage. Japanese LBA bombers continue ground attack air strike against 8th Australian Division at Wau. AAR follows.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 90 aircraft (all fighters), no Jap TF, 15 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32), no fires.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 145 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 187(114), refinery 96(5), 24 Jap LCU.

Planned night airfield raid on Magwe by RAF 2E bombers failed to launch, no cause identified.

Summary of Operations 7/21/44

Central Pacific: US Main Carrier force (11 TF including 14 CV, 8 CVL) launches port strike against Truk. While the element of surprise by the US force was apparently successful (based on known information from game turn reports throughout the course of its transit north), only a relatively small number of Japanese ships were caught in port at Truk – none of these major IJN surface combat ships or KB carriers. Reported US plane losses included 3 SBC Helldiver and 2 SBD-5 Dauntless (all ops), no reported Jap aircraft losses. Detected status of Truk base hex shows no Japanese ships remaining at anchor, 5 Jap TF (11 ships total), 31 aircraft (unknown types), 69 port damage, 12 Jap LCU.

Main Carrier force departed Suva on 7/12 with replenishment TF’s embedded within the Carrier force formation, the entire group moving northward at the replenishment TF’s speed. During its movement north, the Main Carrier force operated in a “silent running” mode – no naval search planes launched to prevent contacts with Japanese TF’s or spotting of US planes over Jap bases. CAP fighters the only planes launched from the Carrier force as it moved north, fighter planes operating only within the Main Carrier force’s current hex position. Fighter CAP was launched from the Main Carrier force for defensive purposes and also to generate reports of contact with Japanese naval search air patrols. A major concern of this mission was unintentional contact with Japanese ships, bases, etc during the Carrier force’s northward movement. This action was my second attempt at a surprise US carrier strike on Truk – the initial attempt timed with the Ndeni amphibious invasion in 4/44. The first attempt at Truk was aborted following an accidental naval air strike by US carrier planes on 4/26/44 against a spotted Japanese transport TF near Nauru Is. Grounding of naval search planes (“silent running”) during the US Main Carrier force’s current sortie on Truk was intended to prevent a repeat of the 4/26 incident. It should be noted that the US Main Carrier force’s movement route to Truk had been carefully plotted and managed to minimize any potential contact with Japanese ships or aircraft plus preventing movement into hexes on or adjacent to Japanese-controlled island bases. In all, these measures not unlike the historical 12/7/41 Japanese strike on Pearl Harbor. Replenishment TF’s with the Carrier force refueled the entire Main Carrier force at sea SW of Kwajalein on 7/19 before turning back southward. A “picket” surface combat TF (4 CL) was dispatched with the Main Carrier force, the CL’s moved northward one day’s movement in advance of the Carrier force itself. Several lessons from the US Main Carrier force’s 1943 operation against Palembang oil production were also incorporated into the Truk operation, particularly in regard to air combat TF fuel consumption.

Original plans were for the Main Carrier force to launch two days of air strikes against Truk and/or Japanese TF(s) spotted leaving Truk base hex. Given results of the initial US air strikes on Truk, the second day of air strikes is cancelled and the US Main Carrier force turning southward as no clearly defined Japanese targets of significant value are visible or detected in the Truk area within reach of US carriers. Central Pacific: US Main Carrier force turns southward from Truk, moving toward Rabaul to attack targets of opportunity in that area. No decision at this time on target selection once the Carrier force reaches Rabaul. Main Carrier force expected to reach attack range of Rabaul on 7/23.

Sigint entry for 7/22 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Kwajalein. Detected status of Kwajalein shows Allied minefield laid by US submarines, no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Australia: Transport convoy WX-9 (19 ships) arrives from US West coast. Cargo aboard the convoy includes US 50 Aviation Base force, 76K supply and 74K fuel.
