I'm afraid your guys will be beaten into the hex by the Japanese. Chinese units will be moving at 4 miles per day. Japanese will be moving at around 7 MPD (assuming they are all infantry). It's because half the terrain he is moving through is clear.

Normally you would be right. But (assuming recon is correct) I started moving 6 days ahead of him (24 miles). I also used the meager Chinese air force to bump him out of move mode. I hope it will be enough and I think he has some armor with him which moves slower.

I should shift hex next turn so I hope he doesn´t too! [:)]

You should be good - got the impression there were fewer days between your units setting off and his.

Yeah, I was a bit unclear. Sorry about that! [:)]

Another naval battle develops in the DEI. I think this one was an allied victory.

------------------------
Pacific
------------------------

A long time since I saw the KB now which has me a bit worried. Most of the WC shipping is now sitting at Balboa but I have some warships available.

Going to put up some pickets I think. Have a good amount of short range PCs for this.

------------------------
NOPAC
------------------------

The 2 ship TF turns out to be 2 DDs. They miss the Colorado TF but run into my AMCs.
Day Time Surface Combat, near Sitka at 190,50, Range 4,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Karii, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Yanagi, Shell hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
AMC Prince Henry, Shell hits 3, on fire
AMC Prince Robert, Shell hits 7, on fire

Nothing decisive but I have to turn the AMCs back for repairs.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

More action here as we stop our first invasion! [:)]
Night Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 70,106, Range 7,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Yugao, Shell hits 17, and is sunk
DD Susuki, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

TB Hiyodori
xAK Tone Maru, Shell hits 9, and is sunk
xAK Uyo Maru, Shell hits 11, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Ume Maru, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

xAK Amakusa Maru, Shell hits 3, on fire
xAP Tatsuta Maru, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
CL De Ruyter, Shell hits 3
CL Tromp
CL Durban, Shell hits 2
DD Piet Hein, Shell hits 1
DD Kortenaer
DD Evertsen
DD Witte de With
DD Van Nes
DD Banckert

Japanese ground losses:
1992 casualties reported
Squads: 60 destroyed, 37 disabled
Non Combat: 27 destroyed, 44 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 15 (11 destroyed, 4 disabled)

The Dutch TF later runs into a Japanese CA TF.
Night Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 70,106, Range 11,000 Yards

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
C.XI-W: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Maya, Shell hits 4
CA Myoko, Shell hits 5
CL Tama, Shell hits 3, on fire
DD Kuroshio, Shell hits 2
DD Oyashio
DD Hatsukaze
DD Shinonome, Shell hits 16, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Shirakumo, Shell hits 18, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Sazanami, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Ushio
DD Satsuki, Shell hits 35, and is sunk

Allied Ships
CL De Ruyter, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
CL Tromp, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
CL Durban, Shell hits 5, on fire
DD Piet Hein, on fire
DD Kortenaer, Shell hits 9, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Evertsen
DD Witte de With
DD Van Nes, Shell hits 6, on fire
DD Banckert

Although losing De Ruyter and Tromp I´m quite happy with the exchange. At least 3 Japanese DDs sunk (most likely 5) and 2000 Japanese troops on the bottom of the sea and the Tarakan invasion turned back.

Looks like Nick is moving in the MKB to sort out the situation. This will be far outside his LBA though and I have surprise ready for it when it comes. [:)]

Van Ghent has been repairing undisturbed at Batavia after getting hit a while back. She now returns to the Fleet in a commendable fashion!
Night Time Surface Combat, near Kalidjati at 50,99, Range 8,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
PB Tatsumiya Maru, Shell hits 2, on fire
PB Naruto Maru #3, Shell hits 18, and is sunk
SC Ch 8
SC Ch 22
xAK Azuchi Maru, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
xAK Bingo Maru

Well done Jocke! This kind of stuff can really set him back if he's planning a quick second phase. I'm sure there are not a lot of reserve troops in the area to fill in based on the other things he's doing. Nice to get those DDs for sure too.

Interested in the next surprise. [:)]

Very quiet turn.

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

Colorado bumps into the DDs but after exchanging some shots they separate without any hits scored.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

The xAP that got away yesterday unloads 25AV at Tarakan. Not enough. It looks like I at least for now scared Nick off. The entire fleet turns back North and abandons what was possibly an Ambon invasion. Looks like he shifted target to Balikpapan instead.

Lots of traffic in the straights at Osthaven. I spot a big SCTF with BBs(?) and CAs as well as a lot of smaller TFs. Invasion for Christmas IO? Some DDs will move in tomorrow with what remains of the Dutch air force.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Nick and I reaches the important hex between the Ankang and Sian road at the same time. This means the hex is open for both players. Bad news for me. Nick starts moving North straight away. I don´t have any troops to send to that hex. Not. Good. [:(]

At least some good news. The roadblock at the Sian road withstood the first assault. Big Japanese disablements.

No kidding! Sadly that won´t effect his supply. [:(]

I tried dumping 50k supply at Rangoon but it just flowed back to Calcutta. [:(]

Very little to report

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

Colorado retires. I don´t know where the KB is and the BBs will be valuable in 44-45. Don´t want to lose any more of them.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Bombardments only.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

I had a big CA TF spotted at Osthaven. I unleshed the Dutch Air force but the CAs turned out to be PC/PBs/DDs and no hits were scored. A DD TF of Porters/Mahans were also sent in to hit the "CAs". They sunk 4 PBs.

Thats all I can manage now. Been up since 3:30 with two sick kids. [:(]

Not much happening.

------------------------
CENTPAC
------------------------

Looks like Nick has moved out a large portion of the Betties based at Lahaina. That can´t be good for me as it probably means he has some evil plan for them...

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Our DDs go in again. Nothing spectacular but every VP helps.
Night Time Surface Combat, near Merak at 48,97, Range 5,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CM Katsuriki, Shell hits 13, and is sunk
CM Kamome, Shell hits 14, and is sunk
CM Kyosai, Shell hits 12, and is sunk
DMS Taneko, Shell hits 36, and is sunk
DMS Sureko, Shell hits 9, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Allied Ships
DD Dunlap
DD Drayton
DD Lamson
DD Flusser
DD Porter

Not going to push it though. Time to get the hell out as they are out of TTs. Don´t have any place to rearm them either. Sending them back to either OZ or India together with what remains of the Dutch Navy.

The USN still have a strong presence in the area though. Houston/Boise have been looking for an opening down in south DEI and might have found it.

Most of the Allied navy is now focused on the DEI. I´ll keep looking for openings. Don´t want to accidently run into the KB.

------------------------
OZ/SOPAC
------------------------

Japanese continue to secure the Solomons. With poor allied search and KBs whereabouts unknown I don´t dare try to intervene. No sign of the 4th and and 33rd IDs yet. Also have the 144 Infantry RGT moving for Rabaul.

Forts and defenses in OZ is still improving. I have about 2500 AV divided evenly between Melbourne and Sydney. Forts are at 4.5 and 4.1 but growing slowly now.

------------------------
Overall
------------------------

Still a very fun game. [:)] The very unusual opening and Nicks style of play makes the game very interesting even for an allied player. He moves really fast and doesn´t hesitate to operate outside the air umbrella. This makes him able to advance very rapidly but also it gives me opportunities.

I´ve only been able to land some jabs though and his rapid advance has really payed off so far. I´m still waiting for 2nd phase hammer to drop somewhere. No doubt it will hit hard and fast.

The only piece of the puzzle I have is the 2 IDs moving for Rabaul, MKB possibly moving towards India and various smaller forces prepping for PH.

All these contradict each other. Its not impossible though that he intends to expand deep into SOPAC (Fiji + Samoans) + take PH. If I remember correctly this is what Yamamoto actually wanted to do? But it was ruled out since the Japanese lacked the cargo capacity to expand that deep. I think their analysis showed they couldn´t even keep the Hawaiian islands fed?

Whatever he plans it will come soon though. KB has been missing for 3 weeks and the 4th and 33rd are on the move.

Think beyond the VP to the function(s) of the ships sunk. Their loss is a permanent reduction in Japanese capacity to perform those types of missions. Think of the number of mines to which your ships will never be exposed. The reduction in the possibility of losses has value beyond VPs.

The IJN will never run out of Type 4 minelayers. The 2 DMS hulls are the real haul here.

Besides that, the Type 4 mines suck. I use them because I feel like I have to, but they just don't pack a lot of punch. Requires multiple hits to sink even subs and DDs.

That is true. Also worth to keep in mind is that every VP I gain is worth x4 in when you regard AV. [:)]

Frustration!

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

The Houston/Boise TF sprints in trying to stop the Japanese reinforcement of Tarakan. I spotted a 14 ship cargo TF there yesterday and sent them in.
Night Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 70,106, Range 8,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Haguro, Shell hits 1
CA Nachi
CA Ashigara
CL Natori, Shell hits 1
CL Kuma
DD Minazuki, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Kamikaze
DD Asagao
DD Fuyo
DD Karukaya

Allied Ships
CA Houston, Shell hits 2, heavy fires
CL Marblehead, Shell hits 2
CL Boise
DD Alden
DD Barker
DD Bulmer
DD Edsall
DD John D. Edwards
DD Stewart
DD Paul Jones
DD Whipple
DD Parrott

No serious damage on any ship. Houston has 22 SYS. The cargo TF unloads in peace and Tarakan falls. The Japanese TF reacts towards Java though and is now within range of Force Z. I´ll send them in at full speed during the night. If Nick hangs around we may have a good chance to cripple a couple of CAs.

------------------------
CENTPAC
------------------------

A S-boat hits a big tanker coming in for Lahaina. Doesn´t look to be in any danger of sinking.
Sub attack near Niihau at 173,108

Japanese Ships
TK San Clemente Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Kiku

Allied Ships
SS S-18

Betties suddenly return over PH and takes an absolute beating! 22 shot down during the day. Nice!

That is it for today!

I think if he doesn't land on Oahu in force by Feb 1 he's past his window. Transit times plus loss of bonus, etc. Your P-40E pool starts to fill. You get a few DDs to play with. Your fort building at Pearl should be past level 5 if not 6.

Keep jabbing and ducking.

Not so sure about that. I can´t fly any fighters short of putting them on CVs as I don´t have any bases in range. Nick also keeps the AF suppressed. Forts have actually not increased very much. The engineers thinks its more important to repair the AF and port rather then building forts... [8|]

He will take PH if he tries. But I´m happy for the exchange. It will require a huge investment on his part and he will probably take heavy losses in the landing. It also (probably) means he can´t do any major 2nd phase attack (OZ, India). I´ll happily give away PH for that.

This is of course if my estimate that he will need about 5 IDs to take it is correct.

Another slow turn

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Force Z missed the Jap CAs as they head almost due West into the Java sea. Lots and lots of subs here so I might get lucky!

------------------------
China
------------------------

Usual aerial attacks and bombardments.

------------------------
SIGINT
------------------------

Now this is interesting...
5/33rd Division is planning for an attack on Pearl Harbor.

This is one of the IDs moving for Rabaul. Looks like Nick is being sneaky and setting fake destinations. He can´t fake the planning though. I´ll be more then happy if he indeed moves for PH rather then OZ.

I also have the 4th ID on the move. Assuming its moving with the 33rd towards PH its still far from enough to capture PH. He needs more which should buy me more time.
