Lok,

The hotkey is 5. It only works in single player, since it gives too much information away.

The supply mechanic for supplying troops in the field is different. Not the same as supplying bases. They will draw from bases with less the x3 supply, heck, they will draw every day.

Your bombing might reduce the AA supply present, but it will barely scratch the supply levels for the the infantry and tanks. You may even see a malus for supply, but that shows up if only one unit is low on supply which in this case will be AA.

Ah, but the combat units have AA too!

Their draw still follows the range rules: short range = 4 days/week, medium range = 2 days/week. long range = 1 day/week, and those are cumulative. Only a unit at short range from a base will draw every day (providing the base has anything).

Ah yes, hotkey 5 and not working in PBEM. Duh, I remember that being talked about now.

I don't recall the change to being able to draw from bases with less than the 3* required supply. Was it in a beta, or what?

Because I know that my units in Burma in my Allied games don't exactly have great supply. Not zero, but red numbers are not uncommon at all.
It was looong ago. I'm sure it was Beta at the time, but it was long enough ago that I think it was before the recent set of Betas (more than one official release ago).

Night bombing
Night bombing at Darwin again. We upgraded the Tojo unit to Tonys today, and 1 is lost on the ground before being ready. I still can't decide what to shift the 2 Tojo-IIc factories to. Do I move them to Ki-83 and try to get that beasty going sooner? It will still be some months before the R&D factories repair reliably...

Night firebombing at Chungking and Lanchow. A few more fires than days past, but still nothing major. He loses a couple bombers to flak/ops.

Burma/Western China
Helens bomb Akyab some more. The airfield is 51% damaged (OK, airfield service is) when the new turn loads.

He sends B-25s to bomb at Ramree and the stack outside Ramree. I have Jacks/Franks on LRCAP over the stack, and I shoot down 5 of the bombers for no loss.

His forces try another attack at Myitkyina:
Ground combat at Myitkyina (64,42)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 30479 troops, 395 guns, 363 vehicles, Assault Value = 743

We'll take it. Continued stalemate, and my forts held this time.

New Invasions
Shortlands - not detected until they landed. Fun! I have basically evacuated this place as he has Munda and below already. I'll fly out even more of the units. It looks like he has no CV or CVE support here, so I flew 44 Jills and 25 Frances to Rabaul. Hopefully they will join the 40ish Bettys there and 53 A6M3a's for escort and sink some ships. I dedicated a Jake unit to search with 60% of its planes in just 2 arcs covering Shortlands and Treasury Islands. Here's what he brought:
Ground combat at Shortlands (109,131)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1446 troops, 6 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 53

Defending force 4259 troops, 183 guns, 69 vehicles, Assault Value = 311

Japanese ground losses:
8 casualties reported

Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:

11th Air Fleet /1
28th JNAF AF Unit /1

Defending units:
3rd NZ Armoured Sqn /4
37th Infantry Div /17
30th Field Artillery Regiment

The bigger invasion - he comes to Cocos in the IO. I had recently rested my Emily unit at Benkoelen (within the past few days) so that I could run them for several more weeks without rest, thinking he would come for Sumatra soon if the Burma/Andamans operations were really a feint (they strike me as something of a feint). Go figure... at least 3 TFs unload at Cocos, and there are CVEs/CVs present. If I had to guess, it's 2 Essexes and maybe some CVEs from CONUS. So maybe he is going to try to thrust up through the DEI. If he's been getting lots of SIGINT on the area, he'll know that there are weak points. Unsure how I feel about this in general.

I did not order an attack by the division on the 15th. Forts are at 4+90%. I want to see how trashed his units are tomorrow. I have 18K supplies on the island. This is a fairly substantial investment on his part - lots of ships here. Nells and Zeroes are now at Benkoelen, but we won't try a strike yet. My Nells would just be flying without escorts. They are set to range 15 so that the A6M3a's can escort them with DTs, in case any ships come closer... I am moving the 4th Division (74 Exp) from Soerabaja to Benkoelen.

MKB (Junyo, Hiyo, Zuiho) is moving down from Medan, and BBs are moving to Batavia from Soerabaja.

Since he has some USN CVs over here and is therefore split east/west (roughly evenly), I am bringing "KB2" over this way: Amagi, Unryu, Taiho, and Ryuho (to join MKB). Katsuragi will probably come down here also when she finishes repairs at Sasebo in 4 days.

KB1 will remain based at Truk (Akagi, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Chitose, Chiyoda).

Other
Musashi and Yamashiro have turned for Guam, where I may let them repair for a little bit longer, or I may not.

I moved the 1x30 Frank-a factory to Frank-r. The Frank-a is kind of disappointing. I have the George, which is a better sweeper, and the Jack/Tony are doing just fine on defense. I've kept the 1x60 Frank-a factory on production. Yeah, it has speed, but the altitude is only 34K and the maneuver is only comparable to George. The Ki-100 actually has a better armament, too. I'll keep some Franks mixed in for now, but am going to go light on upgrading units to them until I have the -r model.

I noticed on loading up the combatreport.txt:
TF 75 encounters mine field at Car Nicobar (44,62)

Allied Ships
DD Napier

1 mine cleared
I laid sub mines here a few days back. Wonder what he's doing with the DD.

Somewhat frustrating is the fact that I have Jake units, with well-trained pilots, searching from Rabaul and Cocos. They should have picked up his forces approaching Cocos - they are set to search at range 10, with 24 planes doing 70% search on a 340' coverage (from 010 to 020, counter-clockwise). The longer arc is the reactivated Emily unit at Benkoelen. Am wondering if his units suffered a LOT of attrition deaths after that attack... 180 troops, 4 guns, 9 AFVs? But I only have +20 Allied LCU VPs this turn.

Image

If he takes this place... I will need to invest in keeping it shut down. It is within B-24 range of Palembang. I can't have that happening this early.

I was wondering too about all the guns - did he bring a bunch of AA units or something?

He said after that he landed with 32%. I'm not sure if he knew everything I had there. He did see me dropping off something maybe 6 weeks ago. It was the division, as it was time to defend in force.

Looked like it was from the East African division? Do those have a bunch of guns? I thought their TOE was pretty similar to other British/CW units. Analogous to Indian divisions, maybe? It's been a while since I looked at them as I am not yet using them for operations in my Allies games.

I believe the African divisions enter with only 40 experience as well.

Not a good idea to go in with such inexperienced troops with such low prep unless he was expecting a walkover.

Bold move committing a full division to the defense.

No wonder he suffered! Atolls need 100% prepp and a couple of weeks of working them over if defended! I bet he took a gamble you hadn´t much there.

Well... I would put a division on Cocos every game. It's just too important as a foothold for the Allies, IMO. It can support full B-24 operations and they can reach the most valuable targets in the DEI. It requires naval power to maintain, but in late 1943 he has that if he wants it.

But you get so many! At this point, I don't have the independent mixed brigades and such that arrive in November '43. It was either a division, or a bunch of crap SNLF units. Cocos has a stacking limit of 60K.

He sees my "KB2" leaving Truk, heading west, during the replay but has no way of knowing what the TF is. It's just there on the map. Not sighted during the next day.

9 Oil was damaged at Lanchow from fires. Oh well. I'm actually having trouble clearing the SRA of Fuel or Oil. Still building tankers, sending xAKs, etc... it's slow going.

Solomons
His TFs melt away, out of range from Rabaul. Oh well. No strikes, but no planes risked either. We got about half of the SNLF unit out of Shortlands before it is captured.

Indian Ocean
His BBs and cruisers bombard Cocos, but only cause a reported 99 casualties and a few base hits. 1 Jake destroyed. 1 CV's worth of planes strike Cocos also, so maybe just 1 USN CV here. His forced shock for the day:

Not great results, but his units are very depleted already. I do have a lot of negatives, but it looks like I can last so far.

And unfortunately, he sends a big SCTF (hunting my 2 Mogamis, maybe, which are now at Rangoon) to Port Blair...he sinks all the ships. I got about 4.5K supplies unloaded out of more than 30K inbound. So that sucks. This is the first out-and-out naval victory for him in a very long time. I imagine he'll be pleased. However, MKB is not very far away and will try to get some strikes in. The Nells are back to Sabang, searching and attacking with torpedoes. Hopefully we can kill a couple cruisers and make it an even trade. The Mogamis are coming out to play also, in case we cripple some. It's more than a day to safety for him.

Almost everything at Tabiteuea is now dead. The Guards Depot Division fragment succumbs today, so can begin rebuilding at Mili... I might bring them back to Truk and put them somewhere else. I'm not sure there is an island left out here worth a division in terms of defenses.

All in all, we're actually down 208 VPs on the day relative to him. Over 100 VPs of LCUs were destroyed at Shortlands and finished off at Tabiteuea. The aerial victories at Chittagong just lessen the VP sting, but I'm pleased with it. I was losing those VPs anyway. Aside from the loss of ships at Port Blair, it was a great turn. Tomorrow we are trying some LRCAP over Myitkyina from Paoshan to try to continue to bleed his Burma Airforce. Jacks and Franks.

There's the summary VPs for the day right there at the top of the image. -208... we earned 75, he earned 293. 106 of his were from LCUs, and 110 from ships.

We've only shot down 73 P-47D2's so far. Nowhere near enough... Also not many B-25D1's, but we gutted one group today. I think for the most part, his pools are fine. He has been very conservative with his air forces for the last year or so, ever since the battles in SW Australia. I know that during that point he experienced multiple instances of not having any SBDs and few worthwhile fighters in the pools.

I'd love to claw back to a 1:1 overall air loss ratio, but that might be a pipe dream. I'm going to keep hitting his planes as much as I can in Burma.

Also vectoring the southern sub and western sub just a bit. The northern sub will remain as previously assigned.

I hope you are really cranking out the planes, because one day the air war is really going to heat up for you and your air force is really going to start expanding too!

Take a look at using the Frank A as a possible kamikaze.

You have mentioned your spare Tojo IIc; I think it might be worthwhile keeping them in production to build up a substantial pool of them. They are pretty versatile too, point blank kamikaze, great climber. I like the Ki100i better, but you already have the factories for the Tojo so you can spit them out. Having a thousand in the pool come 1945 isn't a bad thing.

I looked, and I get 3 or 4 IJN fighter Sentais on October 1. Can't wait. I need them. They arrive with 2x A6M2, but I have almost 200 A6M5c in the pools and almost 100 A6M3a. I still have factories for each, producing 2 A6M3a per day (I'm anticipating losing them in escort roles) but my A6M5c factories are presently turned off. I have 3x30 of them if I need to turn them back on. I'm still going to be upgrading a few units to the A6M8, which is also in production at 255/month, but I think I am going to use a mix of A6M5c and A6M8 on KB. Can't decide which is going to be the escort and which the CAP. The A6M5c hits harder (1 extra CL MG), but the A6M8 is faster and shorter ranged (can't go to 8 without DTs, and even then it's extended range which is bad for fatigue if I am going to strike 2 days in a row). Because of the range, I have the A6M8 as the CAP plane right now. I am thinking that later in the war I may use the A6M8 exclusively. Its speed may make it better at each - able to compete with the Corsair and such, and an extra MG isn't going to do a whole lot against Allied planes.

It also carries 2x250kg bombs, for a kami role if necessary...

As for total production, I'm at 72/day according to WITP Chart in Tracker. I don't think this is correct, as if I add up all of my active factories it is 55/day, but I have a substantial portion of those turned off (flying boats, some transports, recon, etc.) as my pools are acceptable and they aren't combat craft. I am "producing" up to 48 planes per day in R&D factory size. I'll have the Peggy-t next, I think.

And of course, once R&D finishes on some models that don't have current equivalents (some NFs, Ki-83, Randy, etc.), my production will pick up by quite a bit. And once I've got the Frank-r, I'll be churning them out.

I'm more concerned about my engine production. I think I need to ramp it up by a lot.

I'm going to keep my size 60 factory in production through the end of the war for precisely this reason. Almost 100 in the pools now, so even at just 2/day I will have 1100 minus losses come 1/1/1945. I'm not sure when he'll be able to activate kamis. Yes, right now I'm losing bases left and right, but it's my soft outer perimeter, which I "designed" for weak resistance and lightning strikes by KB/surface forces. I'll try to do it again in the Marshalls. Every CV I sink delays him by months.

I have the Oscar-IV as my SR1 kamikaze. I really think my Tojo-IIc is redundant. I have 158 in the pools... The only thing it has going for it is the climb, and it is a substantial advantage compared to others, but I just don't know!

I have noticed my tracker chart plane production screen isn't accurate.

Definitely need engines...[:)]

The A6M8 is better than it looks in a comparison with the A6M5c I think.

Well, if the maneuver penalty for facing fighters that are >50mph faster is to have the maneuver rating cut in half, then the A6M8 faces off much better against the Corsair. I think both compare favorably to the Hellcat.

We'll see. There's a reason I am making 255 A6M8 per month right now. [:'(]

Wow, top of page 3!

Quick question (and hopefully I'll have time to do some proper updating, sometime [;)])...

I don't have the time to tune the search, and can't find the answer quickly. I remember that these always get mentioned when talking about "capital ship conversions" - but do Ise/Hyuga need to be at Tokyo in order to do their special aircraft/AA upgrades? They stay the same type, I know... which leads me to think no. But they always get mentioned and I can't remember what the answer is. [:-]

I'm thinking I'm going to do them. It would be nice to have bomb/torpedo magnets for CVs later, which is my planned default use for the Yamatos. I have the 2 Hiyos still which are the same speed, and having the float planes to help scout or do ASW with (M)KB would be nice. Also their AA rating at the end goes through the roof, relatively speaking, for IJN. Over 3000!

And they still have 8x 14" guns if I want to bombard, which still ain't bad at all.

Summary of action I haven't reported on to date:
-Burma is going poorly.
-Marshalls will go down sometime soon, but that's OK.
-Rabaul is secure enough, for now.
-No USN/KB battle yet.
