OK, new pet peeve...

ORIGINAL: geofflambert

Another pet peeve doesn't come to mind right now so I'll post a joke.

What does an Inuit wear when relaxing in the igloo?

An eskimono.

What does an Inuit wear when reading a book while puffing on his pipe?

An eskimoking jacket.

...the gorns' jokes!!![:D]

Einstein couldn't believe it when those things classified as nebulae (not all nebulae mind you) were galaxies, some with millions to billions of stars. He had no idea.

I promise I won't tell the one that goes 'what do you have when an eskimo, his wife and sister in law are under a polar bearskin and they're still shivering?'. You know, the one where the answer is 'eskimo pie'? No, I promise I won't tell that one. And don't anyone make any man on husky remarks.

Game related pet peeve..:

When creating a naval fleet, we expend points to obtain a good leader for the fleet, only to lose that leader once the fleet docks.
(In real life that leader would have been a 2nd "bighat" aboard a particular ship, and he often stayed with that same ship when his ships sailed again.)

Perhaps expending points to make a "flagship" would allow retention of the ranking admiral??

Non-game pet peeve:.....I try to not buy any product a child or dog has suggested I purchase..
(Except for goats...I like the Directv goat and "Rick the goat" on another commercial..)[:'(]

Methinks the Gorn needs a new opponent, so he can show us swift and merciful again.

Had my first cherry tomato from the garden yesterday, picking blackberries, blueberries, cucumbers daily now. Asparagus, Spinach has come and gone, but still lots of lettuce.

Something got in and ate some low hanging green beefsteaks. Vegetarian Gorns, I wonder?

No, we bait our hooks with those.

When I was in the scouts we were fishing from a dam. Nobody caught anything and we ran out of bait. This one kid put a booger on his hook and immediately caught a catfish! [:D]

If you tie a booger in a bow, what do you have?

If the problem is ruminants, I found planting rosemary keeps the deer at bay. I also get these cartridges from a company called Sweeny's that the deer hate.

Rosemary eh? Thanks.[&o]

I have Marigolds planted with them, they help with keeping some bugs away, but I didn't know about Rosemary.

Normally the deer leave the garden alone, but rabbits, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds have been known to be terrors.

I planted Kiwi two years ago, and it has grown great, but something eats the fruit when very small. I put a ground fence around them last year, no joy, so this year I netted them which has worked.

Around the 4th of July every year the squirrels I believe get in and eat every peach. Here today, and gone tomorrow. My efforts at stopping this larceny have been 100% ineffective.

Any ideas for Peach protection? More netting perhaps?

I used to grow big beefsteak tomatoes but they don't seem as acid as they used to be. Could be I'm just getting old I suppose. Old people start turning back into kids and eat stuff like Chef Boy-ar-dee and candy and crap like that. [:D] St. Louis moved south a few years back as far as planting zones go. The summer before last I think there was a stretch of six weeks where the temperature topped 100° F every day. A lot of things I used to grow won't anymore. Okra is wooden no matter when you pick them. I've tried two years in a row to grow rhubarb, it comes out of the ground and just withers. I have a friend who gave up on tomatoes too. Hot peppers grow fine (I particularly like the jalapenos) and I have some blackberry plants going. Roses still grow well (some hybrids). I used to grow squash and zucchini, might try that again. Most herbs do fine or at least in spring and fall. Tomatillos do ok.

Found this kind of late. I've never heard of a Santa Rosa Plum. Three years ago I planted a Bruce and a Gold Plum near each other for cross pollination.

Haven't borne any fruit yet. No idea how mature they have to get to start producing.

Florida is a great climate for all but cool weather crops although I do have some cabbage, cauliflower and brussel sprouts growing well so far that I am experimenting with this year.

I have the following fruit trees in my yard:

Loquat x 2
Pomegranate
Fig
Bruce Plum
Gold Plum
Ponderosa Lemon
Key Lime
Banana
Tangerine
Papaya
Nectarine

My vegetable garden is full of tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and peppers of all kinds along with just about every herb under the sun.
Also trying okra, kale, Swiss chard and arugula this year.

Food from the backyard is the only way to go!

I tried a pomegranate here. It survived the first winter, which was mild, but the next one killed it. I have two orange trees and a lemon in our greenhouse. The lemon produces, but getting the oranges to ripen correctly is tricky. I grew up in Los Angeles and we had a Santa Rosa there. It loved that climate. They grow fine here, but the springs are usually too cool to pollinate fully.

Blueberries love it here, we have 5 bushes and they are all doing well. I'm surprised they do OK in Florida, I thought they were one of those crops that needed a certain amount of cold in the winter to do OK.

I have two more plum trees that are bearing fruit for the first time. I looked up when I bought them, it was 2011, so this is the 4th year. The black amber plum has so much fruit on it I bought some poles to prop up the branches. Every branch has lots of large plums that are getting darker by the day.

We're having an abnormally hot spring, temperatures up in the 80s and 90s F before late July are rare. The plum trees love it, but the apple trees didn't set fruit quite as well. My Pippen apple (best pie apple there is IMO) put on two apples and I was watching them. I went out there one day and they were gone. The branch they were on was on the ground. Something broke off the branch. I can't figure out what, it doesn't look like anything was trying to eat the branch. It may have been a young raccoon who got out on a branch that was too thin. The branch snapped off at the main trunk and it looks like it was a quick break, it wasn't as clean as a cut from a took, but it was pretty clean for a broken branch.

I have two Honeycrisp apple trees. I've heard they are even better when allowed to fully tree ripen, but neither of them have produced yet. One won't grow because the deer keep nibbling at it. They have turned it into a bonsai. The other is getting pretty big, but it hasn't even bloomed yet. I'm hoping it does soon.

I agree home grown produce can be so much better than what you buy in the store.

There are some hybrid blueberries that are supposed to do OK in Florida.

I have three plants in containers and they struggle to produce anything.

I get a few very small berries. A handful every now and then to top a bowl of oatmeal.

Strawberries and blackberries however, love the Florida weather.

Plants?...I used to live in Frankfurt am Main roughly two blocks from The Palmengarten(The Palm Garden), where all kinds of so-called tropical plants grew outside every day, including palm trees..
Remember...Frankfurt is as far north as mid Canada, so it has proven difficult to get Midwestern Americans to believe they do grow in the snow, LOL.

Here's a peeve: Everyday I'm on the net I'll see an ad that says "New rule in Missouri has drivers furious". How can we have a new rule every flipping day and stay furious?

I've noticed some sites have links to fake news stories now. One I've seen on several sites is the same thing you're referring to, but it refers to Washington drivers, or occasionally Oregon drivers if their trace back of my IP address says I'm in Oregon. It's all fake trying to sell you something. It would be nice if internet ads had to be designated as such, though it would just make plugins like AdBlock a lot more effective.
