E13A1 Jakes on Naval Attack and ASW

A Japanese player has an opportunity to train a couple of hundred float plane pilots. Those pilot trainees usually develop their NAVAL SEARCH skills. However I noticed that spotting an Allied sub has become very difficult somewhere along the numerous BETA patches.

I noticed that the only air groups that consistently light-up enemy subs are ARMY planes flying ASW missions. Since NAVAL float planes such as Jakes are pretty useless flying Naval Search anti-sub missions, I was wondering if it is worthwhile in training Jap float planes in ASW skill instead, even though float planes can't do any damage to a sub, at least they could spot it?

I am also noticing that Japanese naval ASW TF groups can't spot Allied subs even though they are sitting on top of it. One can tell that this is happening because the ASW TF is lit-up with detection of something like 4/4.

Also is it worth investment in training Jakes in NAVAL ATTACK skill rather than search? I am also training some float planes groups in AIR SKILL with ultimate intention of using them in Japanese naval fighters?

I've noticed also that groups on ASW missions will "spot" subs on your map more often than naval search. This is not to say that naval search missions can't do it, but ASW does it better. This makes sense, as it takes more time to look for a sub (it's why ASW flies only to half range).

If you want to spot subs, use ASW. Damage to them is a bonus if you are using Jakes, although enough 60kg hits can send them back to the barn. Even just 1 hit can deal enough system damage to the boat to cause it to miss on its attacks or fail to evade surface ASW or fail to control the damage from a successful hit from a larger aerial bomb or depth charge. My subs that get hit by 60kg bombs tend to have somewhere around 10-12 System damage. Not a lot, but enough that I would think twice about risking them in trying to get an attack inside of a shallow water or base hex, for example, where I would be subject to more effective ASW.

When I saw this title I thought it was a discussion about bathroom facilities on ASW. Jakes is another name used for bathrooms.I misread that lol

Since you have a lot of FP airgroups and they are not demanding wrt airfields, ASW jakes are your main awareness enhancer. A good opponent will shift his subs a lot, and you need to find their current area quickly and react by getting real ASW in and cargo routes out.

Also FPs are great platforms for training multiskill IJN pilots, like those needed for torpedo bombers.

I find them difficult to train in specific skill so I import pilots for special units and important ships at times, other I put on general training all the time they are in port. GT can get sometimes 5 skills in one day!

In my experience, Jakes are only effective at Naval Attack very early in the game, when there are not enough Allied escorts or aircraft to go around. Being float-planes, they get shredded by any fighter. I generally train all land based Jakes for ASW where they are of far more use later on. As has been said, they are awareness multipliers and do have some success finding and even sinking allied subs.

"Jakes is another name used for bathrooms". In what country? In the U.S. we use the word "John". Also the word "Bomb". As it pertains to ASW tactics within the restroom arena, one can drop a "bomb" while in the "john" and sitting on the "can". LOL Some of my best strategy was thought out while sitting on the "can" after the morning cup of "joe". Seems like the only place in the house where a man can escape from his wife!

"Jakes" was widely used in the US in the 19th C. and probably up to WWII. I haven't seen it in print except in old novels.

I've heard my father use the term, but he was born in 1920.
