ARRAS-A RUDE AWAKENING
A Three Scenario Campaign
UK-France vs. Germany
Arras France, May 21, 1940
Design: Wild Bill Wilder
General Erwin Rommel's and his 7th Panzer Divsion seemed unstoppable.Together they rolled through Belgium and France and seemd to be everywhere. They would be nicknamed "the Ghost Division" by an enemy soldier for that reason.
Rommel's first encounter with the English soldier would not be a pleasant one. It was a rude awakening to the German leader. Even the unstoppable can be halted in his tracks occasionally.
In a desperate attempt to open the pocket at Flanders, English armored units of the 4th Royal Tank Regiment charge the German lines. The thick-skinned Matilda II tanks seem unstoppable.
The newly arrived Totenkopf SS Regiment guarding the 7th's right flank panics and breaks. It is a disaster in the making. Moving from one weapon to another Rommel steadies his men and has all guns firing.
Quickly he he orders the 88mm AA guns into action. They were designed originally for anti-aircraft protection, but the big spider like guns will assume a new role today, a lethal one. It will prove to be a formidable anti tank weapon and become a deadly nemesis to Allied tankers throughout the war.
The battle will continue throughout the day in three distinct actions. The British attack first in two separate waves. The late arriving French also go into action, but by now the Panzers of the 8th Regiment have arrived and put up a hard fight.
When the day has ended Rommel will have gained a healthy respect for the British. He will carry this experience with him into the desert nearly a year later. Hitler will be so shaken that he calls for a halt in the German advance. Doing so will allow the British time to retreat to Dunkirk and make their famous evacuation.
