Al commented in our last email, that he wasn’t prepared for the Saipan assault, and hoped he still had enough time to take the islands. We have one month remaining after this turn (AUG 6 end date). Pagan (which got hit again) may eventually fall, I can’t do much about his tanks, and he is gradually grinding down my defenders. I could try some more shore bombardments, but Pagan’s not one of the critical islands, so I don’t want to risk too much if it’s a lost cause. Tinian has been able to hold its own, unless he brings another major wave. That’s where I would probably risk my BBs or KB, to prevent another full assault convoy (Division-sized). Otherwise, I am going to continue trying to hit him around the edges.
Speaking of hitting him around the edges, my CVL TF made it into Truk undetected and disbanded last turn. [8D] I refuel and send them south. I spotted a couple small (2-4 ship) TFs north of Truk, but he has too many CVTFs around, and I don’t want to expose them unless I can get a good target. I am searching near Ponape and further east w/LBA, he reloaded the Marine Rgt he used on Wake, he may try to do the same at Ponape.
Meanwhile, further north, search planes out of Marcus spot a full REP TF at Wake! My CA Atago could have tried a full-speed run, but that would have left it exposed, and no guarantee they’d still be there. I am moving closer, to be within range for a night run if he’s still there tomorrow.
