Gulf War 1991

Post by jafo657 »

I know it's probaly been done to death but i thought i'd give it a go. At the moment i'm just asking for input for Aircraft No., Squadrons and locations(Bases) for the U.S, U.K. I'll work on the game mechanics later on. Please let me know what you think.

"I know it's probaly been done to death"

Yet so much questions remain, like for example what, where and how many SAMs and radars Iraq actually had (just SA-2: according to some sources Iraq had mainly SA-2B (early Dvina), some SA-2F (late Dvina) and few SA-2E (Volkhov) but according to Hpasp, developer of SAM Simulator Iraq has bought only SA-2E variant - 35 batteries including training ones delivered between 1974 and 1986).

Unfortunatelly I can not help you with Coalition forces (I am struggling with NATO forces in Europe).

Thanks for your comments. I briefly had a look at the Iraqi setup and you're right, they mostly had the SA-2f. Once i finish up with the Coalition setup, l'll start with Iraq.
Thanks

Hi Doug,

I'm concerned that the unit count is going to be extremely high. It's already at almost 5000 AUs and your not even finished placing units. I think your doing a great job recreating the war but I don't know if our PCs can handle it. Would you consider sectioning off the war into smaller scenarios? Maybe divide up the map into quadrants or just place the units for several 24 to 48 hour missions.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see this work but I don't think there has ever been a scenario this large.

Doug,

I am a fan of the Gulf War time period. Would you mind sharing your references with me. Are you using mostly books or have you found any good links with OOB listings?

Thanks,
Rob

I think there are too many tankers on the coalition side
One of the airfields south west saudi arabia do not work - no runway access points

There are no ground units on the coalition
In the near of kuwait

The iraq airbases should not be single unit airbases...
I like this big scenario

French forces ??

Ahem.

Yes.

This.

That said, I'm glad I've struggled through for the 20 months since release with my old computer. A much more powerful machine can be had for the same money as in Sep 2013.

Hmmmm... by that logic, I've talked myself into waiting a few more weeks.

Thanks for your comments. The tanker numbers are correct and I too think it's way too much but I thought I'd just give it a try and see how it flows. I've been adding ground units to the Iraqi side but I haven't bothered putting an on the Coalition as l've haven't setup any attacks by Iraq. I'm also in the process of changing all the Coalition airfields to single bases and the Iraqi ones to their proper ones. I know it's a big scenario so what I'm also doing is breaking it down into 3 parts. Hopefully I'll get some time and get that finished soon.

Good luck
Thanks

Hi Jafo,

I spent some time putting together a DS OOB for falcon 4 and also a scenario for this game that I never finished.
See my attached xls spread sheet (zipped).

I'll look for the sources - don't have them to hand, but will post if I can find them.

What I have listed is from internet sources and cross referenced as much as possible to represent the "Day One" forces.
This lists the US forces only (Sheet 1 is USAF - Sheet 2 US Navy). The UK and allies were actually somewhat tougher to get concrete numbers for.

Please don't take my word for it, these were my references, but hopefully they may be useful to at least put certain units or locations "on your radar" so to speak.

**EDIT - looks like I didn't include forces in Turkey.

Anybody else find it interesting that the E-3 Sentry's were never dispersed? All 8 were located at the same air base.

Doing a bit of work tracking down the allied stuff. Finding some good sources. Info on French Air Force is hard to pin down, have found fragments but nothing solid, so far:

I believe that NATO AWACs were operating out of Incirlik Turkey (3 I think not confirmed) as well. I need to confirm, but think the RAF was flying AWACs (2) out of Akrotiri Cyprus.

Perhaps the concentration of support and repair facilities was more considered more critical than the threat (Scuds?) so they kept them together.

Edit: Screen shot, table didn't format well

I think the older Osprey Combat Aircraft #27 had a good run down of uS and non-US air OOBs. It has been a while, but I thought they had a rundown by location and squadron. The Iraq side was covered lightly.

Haven't checked in detail but found this line in a fairly detailed source:

Aug. 12 Thirty-two KC-135 tankers deploy to Saudi Arabia
as vanguard of tanker force soon to total more than
300 KC-10s and KC-135s
