How does it differ from SPWaW?

Get ready for Mark H. Walker's Lock ‘n Load: Heroes of Stalingrad. This is the first complete computer game in the Lock ‘n Load series, covering the battles in and around Stalingrad during World War II.

While it does technically cover similar activity (i.e. tactical-level ground combat), that's about where the similarity ends.

HoS is much more like Avalon Hill's Squad Leader game. Battles will tend to be a bit smaller in scale with HoS than most SPWaW games and there is a more intense focus in HoS on the effects of a single leader, tank, hero, or smoke grenade, etc.

Both are good games, but the look and feel is just entirely different. Where SP makes me feel like I'm watching a battalion or regiment-level battle from a helicopter, I'd say HoS makes me feel more like I'm watching a company-level battle from the third floor of a nearby building. :-)

It's always pilot error. Sometimes the idiot just doesn't know how to fly a broken aircraft.

Thanks a lot. That is very informative.

Is this game still alive? I heard Lock 'n Load left Matrix. Any prospects for the future? I mean player base, community, and so on...

I don't know if it is still alive, but forum is not very active. Lock 'n Load is making new version so it seems better choice if you want community, addons, etc. Although I think it will take them some time to deliver.

I wouldn't Hold your breath for the new Pacific Version of this game, Lock N Load Games looks to be busy with their board games. I have been playing this game for years 1st as a beta testor and now just because its a great game. As close to Advanced Squad Leader as you will get on the PC.
