[WAD]Aircraft dropping targets uncommanded, 618.18

Post by AlexGGGG »

I have the save file where the aircraft is targeted against land targets. Targeting lines are green confirming assignment. However, some time later, the aircraft will drop target (because target is not autotargeted and no outstanding weapons or assignments exist).

In previous versions, behavior was to stay on target forever. 678.18 drops targets after some quite short time.

Correct, works as designed. The behavior of (very, very) previous versions was causing problematic AI behavior so we changed it.

Too bad.

Earlier I was able to assign targets immediately after launching aircraft, and then forget about the group; it will fly to the target, bomb it, return back, and get ready for the next sortie, all without me even aware of that. I watch enemy units in meanwhile; if some enemy start threatening the group while in transit, this will get my attention, otherwise the strike is fully automatic process.

With the update, I have to launch the group, plot course near enough to the target, not forget about them when they arrive, and then assign targets. The not forget part is really difficult. As there is often some long time, often a day of wall clock time, between launch and actual attack, quite often I get busy in some other area, and the group will RTB because of bingo fuel.

Maybe we can get the old behavior back for manually controlled groups? or maybe get a staff message that such-and-such group, which is not assigned to any mission, arrived at its last waypoint and is orbiting there awaiting orders?

I think using the mission editor might solve these issues for you.

Please try this:

1. manually take off
2. create a strike mission covering the targets
3. right-click on the a/c group and select to assign the group to the mission

A flight plan will be generated and the a/c will be on their way [8D]

Yes, this is sort of how I ended up doing. Using strike missions lacks the ability to assign specific number of weapons for a specific target, but that's solvable via WRA to a satisfactory extent. I'd say case closed.

I had the same problem as you with the new version until i figured out that there was a way to prevent that.
When you asign the target in the weapon allocation box . Uncheck the "Enable automatic salvo cancelation.... " box.

That did the trick for me.
