Saving MacArthur

Post by RayYoung »

Maybe a dumb question.

I set the HQ to strategic move and wait for the appropriate days. I have a Transport TF at Manila I can't get Mac Onboard.

What am I doing wrong?

Nothing Ray, he magically escapes in a few months after the start...not sure when exactly. So no need to move him. In fact you can get two Macs if you are that unlucky! He reenters the game as South Pacific if I recall....

And you learned something about ground troop transport. Even in Strategic move mode, that unit could not be loaded aboard ship because it is restricted (look up that section in the manual).

AFAIK there is not really any special code for MacArthur, there are simply two leaders in the database that are the same in every way, including the name. Because that HQ on Luzon almost always gets destroyed early on, the effect is that it looks like Mac escaped and made it to Australia, in time for that new HQ to appear.

witpqs is quite right. However there is an ability to "save" the Mac in Luzon by airlifting his unit out of the region (designate the hex he is in for a supply run, get the hex targeted and then switch to troop transport). This is one way to get around the white restricted command that is his first unit. I'm not sure why someone would want two Macs (a Big MAC with cheese?) but it can be done....I think. Hal

But the base being transported to must report to the needed HQ. [8D]

Are you saying that it must be under USAFFE control? I've never fully lost all the PI, so I guess I didn't know that. I thought it could be airlifted to any place.... Hal

Yes. Restricted units (as you know) can not board ship at all, but in addition can only be airlifted to bases of the same HQ.

Exploiting this is a standard technique for concentrating the scattered Dutch forces.

They can be airlifted between any Dutch controlled bases.

I start evacuating Dutch units from Borneo on December 8th.

In fact, some players go as far as converting a base in OZ to Dutch control so their forces can be airlifted there.

I also typically airlift the US units scattered amongst the islands in the PI to Cagayan to increase the chances of holding out longer there.

First of all.....thanks for all the responses. I truly learn a great deal here. The learning curve on WITP-AE is fairly steep.

I have started and restarted the game playing the Allies now about 12 different times as the result of what I have learned here. Each time I am more impressed with both the depth of the game and the knowledge base those of you in this forum bring.

Thank you again.
