I have a SNES in my den and a NES in the attic.

These are where my wargaming love affair started:

I didn't have a PC at the time so I miised out on all the great wargames of that era, but as simple and gimmicky as these games were, they have a massive nostalgic pull for me.

Modern-day Nintendo? No idea [:D]

There are some great Nintendo (NES and SNES) emulators available for the PC---- FCEUX in particular is very solid.

The games themselves are easy to find, if in a somewhat legal gray area--- though my understanding is that the Nintendo corporation looks the other way as far as they are concerned.

It is a bit awkward mapping an old Nintendo controller to a say a modern XBOX one, but otherwise many of the games do hold up.

My 8 YO girl and 11 YO boy love the Wii U that we got them for last Christmas, when they were 7 and 10, respectively. The PS4 is probably more versatile with lots more titles, but many of these are not for children. The WiiU has kept the promise of the Wii (we have one of those too) of being intuitive and (mostly) safe for young children.

We bought the girls a Wii one Christmas when they were 7 and 5. What a brilliant present that turned out to be. Making your own Mii's and using them in games is a cool idea too (I presume you still can?).

I would recommend the WiiU for children that age without hesitation.

I wonder if the thread starter is a spammer smart enough to get a post to stick.

I suspect so but:

a) probably sensible to give him the benefit of the doubt,

and then even if he is:

b) he has started a thread unwittingly that is of interest to some people [:)]

My family has several NES consoles. North & South was fun wargame in its time :)
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Played North and South on my Amiga 500. Couldn't get the game to save. I admit it was a copy of the game.
I then realized that run and jump was not the game style for me. No idea how often I fell off the train.
