Well I thought the recovery of the ship's bell was kinda cool, & in keeping w/ Royal Navy traditions.

The 'Cross of Nails' (made IIRC from metal found in ruins of Coventry Cathedral, destroyed in WWII) was retrieved from the sea-floor wreckage of HMS Coventry north of West Falkland, sailed w/ her successor namesake 'til 2003, was returned to Coventry Cathedral, & now sails aboard HMS Diamond.

The bell is as far as I would go with artifact retrieval. It is customized to the ship and can be a lasting memorial symbol for the loss of ship and crew. Removal of anything else is ghoulish disturbance of a grave site (possible exception - recovery of the gold reserves of Norway lost with HMS Edinburgh because these are not directly ship's artifacts).
