Hotseat?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Hotseat?

Post by PantheraTigris »

Hello all. I am an old Panzer Blitz player from the 70s, and am interested in getting into a turn based East Front game. I am only currently interested in the East Front, I don't want to play all aspects of WWII at this time
WITE looks very intriguing but I cannot find any info on if it has true hotseat play, me playing against a friend sitting at the same pc.
I am considering either WITE or Tiller's Campaign Series. Does WITE have true hotseat, and is it more accurately depicted than the old Talonsoft East Front game in the Campaign series?

Thanks!

It is a very detailed game but not really recommended for a hotseat game when playing the full campaign. You could probably play some of the smaller scenarios as hotseat but not the campaigns. On the Axis side you can spend several hours just on one turn and you will definitely spend many hours per turn on the Soviet side as your forces are not as organized as the Axis side.

Thank you for the info. It looks like I'llget the Tiller series. I probably don't have the time to devote to WITE

I disagree with Commanderski here. Yes, the game is very detailed. And if you want to be very 'down in the weeds' the game allows that in spades. But it is also very fun, I would say more fun, to play by mostly just pushing counters and looking at the high level action. The game takes care of all the details for the most part. Now if you are playing competatively, yes it would be a disadvantage, although honestly probably not such a huge one. But you can do gross adjustments quite quickly. For example, when playing soviet, I like to control my flow of replacements in the early stage of the war (when I am watching Arm pts) to the most effective units. So I turn them all off in the beginning, and each turn do a sort on the commanders screen of inf. units by experience or morale and turn on those units that are at whatever level I want. That whole process takes me maybe 5 minutes... that is an example of something where you could put more time into it, but there is very serious diminishing returns I believe.

Now some things like the first German turn, yeah they take a while. But the first several for the soviets are fast!

I play hotseat now more than PBEM and it is a great game for it.

Thanks for that additional info Darby. I want to get a sim that is the most realistic it can be for a pc game. WITE looks like it might be the most realistic of the games I am considering.

I only bought the game recently and I often play hotseat against myself. I find it an excellent way to learn the mechanics of the game.

I am no expert but I think the game is perfect for hotseat play, particularly the smaller scenarios though the main campaign would be fine too.

I am almost hooked. I'm trying to decide whether to order the game plus both addons for $89 from Steam.

It's a shame you didn't ask your question about a month ago as you could have got the base game and expansions for around 50% off when it was on sale.

Still, it's worth the cost even at full price. It's the best wargame I've ever played and I've been playing 'em for over thirty years. [:)]

Amen to that. I just bought the game and its expansions. I don't expect to sleep anytime soon.
