Kh-32

So pardon my ignorance, but I find this a little confusing. What is being discussed and shown here, the KH-32, the KH-59, the KH-SD, or the KH-MT??? Searching google for information about these designations points to previous weapon designs, none of which look at all like what is being depicted here. "articles 9A-2362" doesn't direct to anything missile-related at all, I'm afraid. Can you perhaps clarify what this post is about? The weapon on the left appears to be a variant of the Klub missile family, and researching the image in google suggests this might be an ARM variant? The weapons on the right appear to be a new type of cruise missile analogous to the JASSM, or the Taurus, but there is very little info as to the purpose, or performance other than it has a limited range of less than 1000km, or 2000km, and may or may not have a nuclear warhead. Due to the nose fairing, there seems to be speculation that these are active radar guided, which leads one to believe that they are intended for anti-shipping?

Anyway, this is all a bit confusing to me.

Well , first news is about Kh-32, this is AShM , upgrade of Kh-22 family based on Kh-22NA with new engine and new radar from "Phazatron"
9A-2362 is military index for Kh-32, so if you see somwhere in russian papers about weapon systems this numbers you can translate this like 9A-2362 = Kh-32
132.0000.000-30 is factory index for Kh-32, so if you see state contract where Russian Air Forces buy this thing it is also Kh-32

second part of my post is about new Kh-59MK2

old Kh-59MK2 cant fit into PAK-FA bays
Image

Altitude range of missile launch km - 0.2 ... 11
The range of Mach numbers flying vehicle at the time of the missile launch - 0.5 ... 0.9
The maximum range of the missile flight, km - 285
Angle to target at the missile launch. - ± 45 °
The height of the missile flight above the earth's surface, depending on the terrain, m - 50 ... 300
Speed of missile km / h - 900 ... 1050
Control system - SNAU based INS + NAP + OE-M
The circular error , m - 3 ... 5
Warhead:
- Type - COEP (penetrator) or KBCH
- Weight, kg - 320/283
Missile launch weight kg - 900
Dimensions missiles, m:
- Body length - 5.7
- Wingspan - 1.3
- Diameter of the body - 0.38 (0.42 in the bow)

so KTRV came with this solution, new Kh-59MK2 , for some reasons dont change missile name
Image
Image

Altitude range of missile launch km - 0.2 ... 11
The range of Mach numbers flying vehicle at the time of the missile launch - 0.5 ... 0.9
The maximum range of the missile flight, km - 290
Angle to target at the missile launch. - ± 45 °
The height of the missile flight above the earth's surface, depending on the terrain, m - 50 ... 300
Speed of missile km / h - 750 ... 1000
Control system - SNAU based INS + NAP + OE-M
The circular error , m - 3 ... 5
Warhead:
- Type - COEP (penetrator) or KBCH
- Weight, kg - 310
Missile launch weight kg - 770
Dimensions missile, m:
- Body length - 4.2
- Wingspan - 2.45
- width, height 0.4

as you can see new Kh-59MK2 have 5km more range, 150 km/h less speed, 130kg less weight to fit on UVKU-50U in PAK-FA bays, both have OE guidance

"weapon on the left" is new KTRV Grom-E1 missile with Grom-E2 submunition

Thank you for clearing that up a bit better. So do know anything about the "KTRV Grom-E1 missile with Grom-E2 submunition?" It looks like a Klub variant. Can you tell us what the intended targets are? What king of range, speed and guidance it has? What is the Grom-E2 submunition, and it's intended target, or mechanism of effect?

Grom-E1 is missile based on Kh-38 with 520kg warhead, Grom-E2 is glide bomb with booster from Kh-38 and 400kg warhead , there is no detail information about this weapon yet

also there is new Kh-58USHKE (IRR) ,basicly Kh-58USHKE with additional IIR targeting systems (as you can see there is two of them, left and right):

Forgive me if this is old news but I didn't see it in this thread or in a search on the forum for "PAK FA OR T-50"

As of March of this year, Russia only has plans to acquire 12 T-50s (including the 8 prototypes) rather than the 52 originally planned by 2020 due to economic woes.

Source 2: http://in.rbth.com/economics/2015/03/25 ... 42179.html

(Google can provide many additional sources as well)

Additionally, the PAK DA is being put off until "past 2023" with a focus instead being on modernizing the TU-160 fleet to the new TU-160M2

Long March 4C successfully lofts Yaogan 27 in China's next surprise Launche

Yaogan-27 Optical Remote Sensing Satellite launched.
Chinese Long March 4C rocket blasted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center on Thursday at 2:31 UTC, carrying the Yaogan 27 reconnaissance satellite to orbit. Chinese officials declared the launch a success about one hour after liftoff and orbital data confirms the identity of the satellite, that is kept secret by officials, as an optical reconnaissance spacecraft. No prior announcement was made regarding the launch, a pattern typical for Yaogan military satellite launches out of Taiyuan, located in the Shanxi Province.

...

The Yaogan satellites either carry electro-optical imaging payloads, Synthetic Aperture Radar systems for all-weather imaging, or Electronic Intelligence payloads that are used to track activity on foreign territory including the tracking of ships across the oceans.

...

As per the usual procedure, no information on the satellite's identity and orbit was provided by Chinese officials. Orbital data released through U.S. Space Surveillance shows the upper stage of the Long March 4C rocket to have reached an orbit of 1,065 by 1,205 Kilometers inclined 100.46 degrees.

This orbit matches that of the Yaogan 8, 15, 19 and 22 satellites, both in altitude and inclination, confirming that Yaogan 27 belongs to this group of 3rd generation electro-optical satellites. Another peculiarity of this satellite series is the use of a 3.35-meter payload fairing on the CZ-4C rocket which can be seen in the images released of this launch.

China now has 37 Remote Sensing Satellites in Orbit (Or 36, if you believe the rumors about Yaogan 1 exploding/self-destructing in 2010), that are part of the Chinese NOSS-like detection network and ASBM-kill-chain. Yaogan-27 is a single optical satellite and not a triplet, like the Yaogan 9/16/17/20 and 25 constellations.

In other news; China plans to launch the GF-4 satellite in 2016 (originally scheduled for 2015), which is a high-resolution (~50m) optical remote sensing satellite. It will cover China and the Asia pacific in geo-stationary orbit.

While this has been advertized as 'civilian', an all-seeing eye with sub-hundred-meter resolution permanently staring down the west-pacific while hovering at GSO, has obvious military implications.

Sure, the resolution is still low by standards of military satellites, but it is already considerably better than other Geostationary Satellites (mostly weather-satellites with resolutions in the magnitude of 500-1000+m). A Nimitz carrier might still be roughly 6 pixels long and 1 pixel broad, but its many times longer wake (and that of its escorts) would be detectable under clear weather conditions. And being at GSO will provide it with good protection against most ASAT weapons that do not have the range to attack satellites that far away.

China's domestically developed Rainbow 5 (CH-5) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on August 27 has successfully completed its maiden flight in northwest China's Gansu Province.

Rainbow 5 is the largest reconnaissance and strike drone developed by China, according to the Chinese Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

"It is successful in accordance with our standards, as the taxiing distance before the taking-off and after landing and the landing point were all within the limits permitted by our calculation," said Ou Zhongming, head of the UAV project at CASC.

Also known as the Cai Hong-5, Rainbow 5 is designed to perform reconnaissance, surveillance, targeting, intelligence gathering, electronic warfare, border patrol, island defense and anti-terrorism missions.

The drone has a maximum takeoff weight of three tons, a maximum payload of 900 kilograms, and an endurance of over 30 hours.

"It will increase the range of reconnaissance from 30 kilometers to 80 kilometers, which will discover targets in a long distance and prevent any danger," said Lan Wenbo, official at CASC.

China unveils ‘Guam Express’ advanced anti-ship missile

Three weeks ahead of President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington, China unveiled several new anti-ship missiles at a military parade in Beijing, forcibly demonstrating that America’s undisputed maritime power was under threat.
Analysts who had been expecting to catch the first public glimpse of the DF-21D “carrier-killer” missile were not disappointed. The missile — for which there is no reliable defence — has been in development since 2011. Its unveiling on Thursday ended weeks of suspense among the global army of specialists who track Beijing’s defence technology breakthroughs.

For all that, however, the missile itself was not seen. Just a launch tube on a motorised carriage with “DF-21D” stencilled on the side was displayed. The main objective of including it in the parade appeared to be symbolic.
Experts were more excited by an offhand comment by the parade announcer, who said that an even more advanced anti-ship missile was already in deployment.

The DF-26 missile, an advanced intermediate-range ballistic missile with a range of 3,000km to 4,000km, had already been fitted with an anti-ship warhead, according to the parade announcer.

“While an ASBM [Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile] version of the DF-26 was predictable, that it is already a deployed system is quite a shock,” said Rick Fisher, Senior Fellow at the International Assessment and Strategy Center in Washington.
The announcer also said the DF-26 was capable of targeting “medium-size ships”, meaning that both US aircraft carriers and their escorting destroyers would be vulnerable.

The longer range of the DF-26 — the DF-21D can only reach 1,500km — means it is capable of reaching the so-called “second island chain” in the western Pacific Ocean, all the way to the US base on Guam.

“A Chinese ability to attack reinforcing US naval forces with precision strikes out to Guam clearly undermines US security guarantees in our multiple Asian alliances, and our implicit security guarantees to Taiwan,” said Mr Fisher.
Patriotic Chinese took to Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, to boast about the weaponry on display, calling the DF-26 “the Guam Express”.

Some analysts say such missiles threaten to consign aircraft carriers — which form the basis of US naval strategy — to the dustbin.

So, the 2nd generation/longer ranged ASBM is in service, as rumoured for years.

The DF-26 is best comparable with the SS-20 Saber/RSD-10 Pioneer IRBM, but with terminal homing anti-ship MARV.

The Chinese broadcast specifically said:

"核常兼备导弹方队,东26能对陆上重要目标和海上大中型舰船实施中远程精确打击,是我军战略威慑力量体系中的新型武器"

"Conventional/Nuclear capable formation, DF26 can perform medium to long range precision attack on both land and large to medium sized maritime target, a new weapon for strategic deterrence" (thanks to sinowarrior @China-Defense.com)

And we have the debut of the much discussed DF-21D ASBM.

In the Chinese broadcaster's words:

"常规导弹第二方队,DF21丁是打击舰船目标的路基弹道导弹,是我军海上非对称作战的杀手锏武器"

"Conventional Missile Second Formation, DF21D, road mobile anti ship ballistic missile, the assassin's mace for maritime asymmetry warfare" (sinowarrior @China-Defense.com)

Outwards, it looks very close to the DF-21C MRBM as shown during the 2009 PRC 60th Anniversary Parade. The only visible difference is the rear end of the cannister: The DF-21D is smooth, while the DF-21C has four stabilizer-legs.

DF-21C MRBM:

Yeah, compare them with the DF-5A single warhead variant:

Image

The new MIRV'ed DF-5B was reported before:

https://fas.org/blogs/security/2015/05/china-mirv/

China had the technology for decades, but refrained from upgrading their DF-5s with MIRV due to minimum deterrence doctrine. But advances and deployment of US ABM changed that policy:
Why Chinese MIRV?

The big question is why the Chinese leadership has decided to deploy MIRV on the silo-based, liquid-fuel DF-5A.

Chinese officials have for many years warned, and US officials have predicted, that advanced US non-nuclear capabilities such as missile defense systems could cause China to deploy MIRV on some of its missiles. The Pentagon report repeats this analysis by stating that China’s “new generation of mobile missiles, with warheads consisting of MIRVs and penetration aids, are intended to ensure the viability of China’s strategic deterrent in the face of continued advances in U.S. and, to a lesser extent, Russian strategic ISR, precision strike, and missile defense capabilities.”

ROK moving ahead with plans to revive the S-3 Viking (!!!)

http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/20 ... 00320.html
SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is moving ahead to introduce refurbished S-3 Viking anti-submarine warfare (ASW) planes to counter threats from North Korea, a military source said Sunday.

The defense ministry insider said the proposal to incorporate 12 former U.S. Navy Vikings into service was approved late last month by a military program review group. The latest development comes after the Navy proposed taking over 20 Vikings that have been kept in storage since 2009 to shore up the country's detection and attack capabilities against Pyongyang's submarine fleet.
