Diamond Harbor hexes

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

If you see the picture on the left, my TF is trying to cross a "red line"; moving from a hex to another hex through an impassable route.

Would this be :
a) a TF path mistake
b) a potential bug allowing TFs to cross impassable hexex?

I am playing DBB-C

thanks in advance

I'm not sure about this, but I think those hexside colors reference land movement. Caligula could order his troops to march into the sea but they might not come back. On the other hand it should certainly be legal to amphibious assault that hex. That would mean ships can enter that hex through that hexside so the question is not what the hexside color is at their entry but rather the hexside color when they leave.

edit: when and where they attempt to leave.

The way I read the hexside colors is:
red: impassable for all
green: only land units can pass
blue: only sea units can pass
white: both land and sea
purple: river crossing will trigger shock attack

Let me restate that again. Ships should be able to enter that hex through that hexside and obviously (I think) move to Diamond Harbor directly from there. The question is should they be able to move directly to Calcutta? I haven't answered that question, have I?

Without a reef visible in hex #1 I don't see how it can be judged impassable. For instance, if there were a base dot or whatever there but no possibility of a port that would mean that that hex didn't actually abut the sea. Even with the Great Barrier Reef there's a way in. That red hexside can therefor not mean it's impassible to ships.

Additionally, the blue hexside between Diamond Harbor and the hex in question means without a doubt that you can move by sea from one hex to the other.

Doesn't the red hexside only mean that nominally that hexside is the property of the Axis player and cannot be crossed from a hex nominally owned by the Axis player?

if I remember correctly, this is Da-Babes specific... they made it impassable to force you to move through Diamond Harbor if you want to visit Calcutta.

It is also interesting to notice that only that PT boat task force is moving directly... any other TF I tried to set to Calcutta is moving through Diamond

can it be that PT boats are allowed to pass impassable reefs?
if so, hats off to the developers to even think about these kind of things

Yep.. you can be playing a game for 3 years and still miss some little details

4.2.1.2 HEXSIDES
Hexsides are used to represent certain types of linear or “barrier” terrain types, such as coral
reefs and rivers. The hexside types used are as follows:
»» Coral Reef: Hexsides that represent areas of built up coral that hinder
naval movement. Coral Reef hexsides are impassable to all land and
naval units except for ships that have a tonnage of 100 tons or less.

In any case that cannot be an impassable hexside from the sea for at the least amphibious operations. Given that the blue hexside between it and Diamond Harbor is unequivocal. You may move by sea from one to the other. Can you move instead to Calcutta directly? I'm not sure but I would bet the answer is yes.

My post was written before your last two posts but I feel good that the blue hexside between Diamond Harbor and the hex in question means it is passable to any ship except if it's an estuary and certain ships draught is too deep, think Saigon.

Ships of less than 100 tons can cross "red" = coral hexes... so my PT boat TF is able to reach Calcutta without visiting Diamond Harbor

Ships of more than 100 tons cannot cross the red hex, therefore they are forced to move to Diamond Harbor, then hex NW of Diamond, then Calcutta

This might be DBB only

Now I need to figure out why my freaking guns at Diamond Harbor didn't shoot at those damned Japanese cruisers !!!

Could they have been firing at your PT boat TF thinking they were much nearer and consisted of "a battleship, two carriers and numerous cruisers and destroyers"? [:D]
