01. Sep/Oct 1939. Post RTB. Canton, China and Kiungchow, Hainan.

These two ports hold 4-4 marine, 1-4 marine and 1-4 infantry amphibious capable units and Yamamoto's HQ which is transportable capable (but not amphibious).

The strength of the IJN, which consists of most of the large aircraft carriers and battleships are docked and Canton. I made the decision to return them to base and take a naval next turn in order to get them in a higher sea box. If they'd stay at sea then they would have moved down to box 2.

It turns out that I should have kept 6 of the IJN heavy cruisers at sea and not returned them to base. The reason ...

01. Sep/Oct 1939. Use Oil - Japan.

Oil! Japan required 4.6 oil points to fully organize all their units but only had 4 saved, which they began the game with.

01. Sep/Oct 1939. Germany - Use Oil.

Germany also burned through all their pre-game saved oil. The used 3 oil points but only saved 2 this turn. This means that they'll need to be careful about oil usage next turn or they won't have enough to reorganize everything.

01. Sep/Oct 1939. Bessarabia.

Turn to the Soviets, in addition to gobbling up Eastern Poland and the Baltic states, Stalin is eyeing the Bessarabia region of Rumania. Unfortunately for Stalin, there were no chits in the USA Germany/Italy entry pool and he didn't want to risk the USA never being able to declare war on Germany / Italy if the Germans were to deny his "rightful" claim to this region.

01. Sep/Oct 1939. Soviet Pacific Convoys.

In the Pacific the Soviets have established an incomplete convoy line from Vladivostok almost to the west coast of the USA. What is that about? [8D]

Speaking of convoy lines, take a look at the ones that the CW and the French have established. The CW did managed to convoy resources from South Africa, India and Australia to the UK, which gives them 3 additional PP's due to food in flames.

01. Sep/Oct 1939. CW Oil Saved / Used for Production.

The CW did manage to get 3 of the 4 oil points to the CW from the Dutch East Indies before they fell to the Japanese. They did have a convoy route established for the 4th, however, the IJN found and sunk 4 NEI CPs working those sea areas.

Another learning moment for me. I tried to protect those 4 CPs with naval assets from the RN and the French navy but soon discovered that all they could do was to watch as the IJN sent the Dutch CPs to Davey Jones' locker.

The USA choose a chit for the German/Italy entry pool and was given a second one for the Japanese entry pool.

The US choose option 9 so that they can send the Philippine resource to China.

The top priorities for the USA are option 15, so that they can start sending their extra oil to Canada for the CW to save. And, options 22 and 34. Of course they will need to choose other options as necessary to get the tensions needed for these.

I need to readjust my "production" thinking from the end game (i.e., due to my last AAR) to early game. For example, I choose not to reorganize a USA TRS in order to "save" one oil point. However, with the USA production multipler at 0.25, I could use two oil points currently going to production and not effect the USA BP total.

I do not know if I would have put the Netherlands INF in the NEI or in the Netherlands; there are arguments for both places. If the British do not plan to occupy Rotterdam, then I would certainly put it the NEI. Of course, I would have the British plan to occupy Rotterdam.

The Soviets dilemma with respect to Bessarabia shows why I always put three US entry chits into the Ge/It pool, and do not invade the Baltic states on the first turn. This ensures that the Russians can claim Bessarabia on the first turn, and the US will still be able to declare war the Germans deny the claim. In practice, the Germans almost never do, because of the threat to Axis oil.

(All this assumes that Germans don't do the impulse three Yugoslav attack, of course, which I don't think is a great idea.)

To play with Food in Flames is a big advantage for the Allies.
That ontop of a USA joining the war prematurely ... feel free to experiment and tinker but I don't think it will be a long lasting match.

Conquests

1. NEI completely by Japan.

2. Netherlands completely by Germany.
(a) UK is new home country.

3. Poland completely by Germany.

The game turn just prior to the conquest phase is attached.

2. Nov/Dec 1939. Axis #1. Europe.

The axis win the initiative and decide to go first. The weather roll is a 9, which results in: arctic=blizzard, north temperate=snow, med=storm, north monsoon=fine, south monsoon=storm, south temperate=fine).

The Germans don't let the snow stop them. They take a land and invaded both Belgium and Denmark. The conquest of Denmark is a given. The conquest of Belgium isn't.

The Germany DOW on Belgium and Denmark resulted in two chits added to the US Germany/Italy entry pool. So, it appears that the US is beginning to take notice of what's happening in Europe.

2. Nov/Dec 1939. Land Combat. Brussels.

The Germans take Brussels on the surprise impulse, but at a cost. The Germans lose 2 corps and see three other attacking units disorganized. The disorganized attackers are reorganized by Rundstedt.

2. Nov/Dec 1939. Antwerp, Belgium.

The CW and French during their impulse (allied #4) move into and take up defensive positions in Belgium. Antwerp is reinforced by the British. On the next axis impulse (axis #7) the weather is fine across the globe (weather roll = 1) and the Germans launch an all out attack to take the city. The result is no losses for either side but all German attackers are disorganized. This is a success for the allies. Because of the late impulse, the Germans choose not to reorganize any of the attackers so Antwerp holds for this turn.

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark and the North Sea.

The CW took a naval on the next impulse in order to deploy two more corps and a garrison to France and Belgium.

However, Gort and his BEF made a tactical, well really a strategic one. Gort moved the entire BEF including his HQ unit into Belgium. This meant that there were no additional spots to disembark any units to Belgium, which doesn't hinge on any FTC, however with Gort outside of France this meant that no CW units could be deployed there due to FTC until Gort moved back. No a problem, unless the turn ended before the CW got a chance to correct their mistake. You guessed it, the turn ended on the next axis impulse and the 3 CW land units in the North Sea had to return back to Great Britain.
