Night Fighters plowing the fields

Post by KWG »

Night fighters are flying the ground support missions of a Corps they are not even in. And the planes in the mission corps are not flying.

Your save game file is for July 10, 1943 while the screenshot above is for Jun 10, 1944.

If your night fighters are set for DO (Day) or DN (Day and Night) then it is possible for them to fly up and intercept enemy air activity without being in a mission. They will show up in the combat report if they fought there.

The planes in the Ground Support mission have a variety of reasons why they may not fly. For one, you can have GS turned off by hitting X. You can see that at the top of the screen..it will say GS-On or GS-Off.

They may not fly because they used up all their miles already. Or because the unit is too beat up to fly. Or because the computer didn't pass whatever check it needs to do to add them to the combat.

Hard to say without looking at a save.

Thanks for catching that I grabbed the first file not the last.

It has happen for several turns. Night fighters being shot down by day fights. Showing no reason for X Flieger planes not to be flying.

KWG,

You did not answer LiquidSkys question about the settings for the air groups which are intercepting these Allied Attacks. I believe that any fighter air groups that are in range and that are set to "Day" or "Day/Night" can intercept daylight enemy air attacks. For example, RAF Fighter Command air groups can intercept any German air groups that are in range and ground attacking or ground supporting attacks on any Allied units. It does not matter if Fighter Command has been ordered to support the units under attack or not.

So I think what is happening here is that the air groups to which the 3 DO217Ns and the 20 JU88C-6s are attached have been set to either "Day Only" or "Day/Night" operations. I further believe that both of these groups are acting as "Fighters" and not "Bombers". So these air groups are not flying Air Support missions for your German units under attack as only bombers and their escorts fly air support missions. Rather these air groups are intercepting the Allied bombers that are flying Air Support missions for the Allied attacking units.

Don't confuse night fighters (aircraft that specialize in night fighting) with the aircraft that you have actually assigned to fly only at night. As Liquidsky said it is possible (though generally unwise) for night fighters to be set to fly during the day and I suppose it is possible for regular fighters to be set to fly at night, though I have never tried the latter.

So you need to check to find out what the settings are for the your intercepting air groups. If they are set to "Night Only" than this is a bug. Otherwise, it is WAD.

I looked at the save and passed it to Pavel. I assumed ground support was only during daylight, in which case this would be a bug. The British planes are set to DN (day/night), but the German a/c are set to NO (night only), so they should only engage only at night.

Yes I should have hit all points instead of a tacit "Yes, Ive checked settings."

I believe the Bf 109-6/N and the Fw 190A-5/U2 are just dayfighters used in the Wilde Sau night fighting operations. I will sometimes use a Gruppe or 2 of them until more radar equipped planes are available.

Thanks, in one battle 23 night fighters took out 90 vehicles but I'd rather limit them to the night, day losses of night fighters too high plus the tech loss.

Ive noticed in battle results that Iam taking ground losses from Allied aircraft even when no Allied aircraft are shown to have been in the battle. Same for the Allies, they take ground losses from the air even when I ,German, have no aircraft in the battle. Is this WAD?

Seems that AI switching night mode when doing air supply and doesn't restore it, which is causing night fighters to react.

The Allies were air supplying units in England and as German player I was able to see it.

Yes, I think Pavel fixed the FOW issue a few days ago as well.
