Looking for good Anti Virus Software
My AVG license is up in a few days and I'm sort of on the fence about whether I will renew or go try something else. I guess I should keep it because I haven't had any problems with it. On the other hand its $54 and I'd like to find something cheaper out there if it exists. Anyone have any recommendations, or should I keep what's been working for me?
Thanks.
Thanks.

RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software
I have used Avast for years, and never had a problem, plus it's free. However, I am no expert on these matters.

If you're looking for an effective, non intrusive with a small footprint AV than NOD32 should be your choice. [:)]

Mostly I'm looking for cost effective. I'm on a budget these days.

Although the NOD32 appears to be cheaper than AVG. Has anyone else here used NOD32? [:)]
RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software
If you really want to save some money just use Windows Defender that's built into Windows 10. I don't find it that bad and I also have Malware Bytes running. They actually do catch stuff when I wander off the path...

I've been using the free version of AVG for several years. My wife uses the free version AVIRA. They both seem to do what's needed.

I'm running "AVG Free Edition 2015" (I just double checked). And I know it's still updating. This system is still Win 7, but I also have it on my Win 10 Laptop.
Thanks

Interesting. I went to the AVG website and they have a free edition. But this time last year I tried to stick with the free edition and for some reason it told me that it was no longer free IIRC. Maybe they changed their mind? [&:]
RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software
The main problem with AVG and Avast are the false positives.
RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software
The free version of Avast has saved me so many times, I bought the retail version just to thank them.
Yes, falses can get annoying, but quick turn off Avast for 10 minutes from the task bar. It also offers a pretty quick boot scan.
IMO, beware McAfee, it is incredibly intrusive.

Windows Security Essentials/Defender for day-to-day and the free version of Malware Bytes for the occasional scan is all you need. They are free and have little to no resource footprint. Anything too nasty for those will probably get past the paid software as well.

I use it, it's been great so far. Combined with MSE is a pretty good setup.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

I would also recommend the built-in Windows Defender; light, free and it runs well unlike other AVs who are not yet ready for Windows 10.
But layer your defense; use MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit (free version) to run alongside WD and use the free Malwarebytes AntiMalware for the occasional on-demand scan.
Finally, take an image of your drive regularly and you will be fine.

i'll expand on that a bit above as well, cloud storage providers now all give away free amounts, so just have a few accounts and back up to clouds, this way if disaster happens, you have your image and some backed up elsewhere as well to recover[;)]

"CCleaner" is good for cleaning up the junk that builds up on your PC, and there is a free version...highly recommended!
