Blood River 1838

On 15 December, scouts from an advancing Boer commando discovered a large Zulu army moving to engage them. The commando leader, Andries Pretorius, chose to construct a laager close to the Ncome River and wait for the Zulu attack.

In darkness, young warriors of the uDlambedlu regiment forded the river and moved into position north west of the laager.

When morning came, the Boers found them sitting in ranks ten deep only 200 yards away. Across the river three more regiments were spotted marching out of the hills to suround the Boer position.

Historical Outcome:
With the first light the warriors of the uDlambedlu regiment rose up and charged the laager. The first attack came to within a few yards of the wagons before it faltering under heavy musket fire. Six more attacks followed and all with the same result. The battered regiment sought cover in a donga and were then counterattacked and driven away by mounted Boers.

By this time the uMkhulutshane regiment was nearing the northern drift and Pretorius ordered his men to meet them. The uMkhulutshane were unable to cross and pulled back to try again at the southern drift. Two more regiments had joined them by then and they finaly reached the laager.

The uMkhulutshane's attacks failed as well and were followed by more attacks by the older regiments, uDlangezwa and iniZyosi. As midday aproached the warroirs became reluctant to continue.

The Boers then launched a counterattack that drove the Zulus into the river where they were cut down mercilessly.

Boer accounts suggest 1000 Zulus were killed around the lagger and 2000 more as they fled the scene. Only 3 Boers were injured in the battle.

The Zulu Player:
Your regiments have failed to get into position during the night, this leaves you with a tough choice to make. Will you attack immediately with the forces on hand? Or will you wait for the other regiments to arrive and attack as one? If you wait, the uDambedlu regiment will undoubtedly be mauled by mounted Boers. But if you attack now, you may not have enough men to break through.

The Boer Player:
You are surrounded and have barely enough men to cover the laager walls. You must mount an agressive defence and take advantage of the Zulu commander's mistakes. Use your mounted Boers outside the laager to harrass the enemy and destroy isolated units. You may even be able to stop the other Zulu regiments from crossing the river entirely.
