Thanks guys. I think I will add 4 or 5 Surrey class CAs. I found some art work for it. Can anyone give me some names for a British CA? I think adding some British CBs might throw off the game some. In my mod the tonnage limit on cruisers doesn't exist. Also the Hawkins Class was turned into CAVs.

Hi DOCUP - here is 'my list' and rationale for what its worth.

If you are going for the County derivatives I would make the following suggestions:

Historically you have to add:

1. Northumberland
2. Surrey

(although names were changed frequently between design and launching so not set in stone).

Personally I would not use Surrey as the name (for a warship) has always seemed out of place to me.

Other English counties that “sound” okay:

3. Hampshire (previously an armoured cruiser – Kitchener and all that)
4. Lincolnshire (not previously used as far as I can see but the name ‘fits’)
5. Somerset (not used since 1700’s and – like Surrey – I am not a fan but an alternative to the Shires)

Alternatively you could spread the net to British counties as per the post war Guided Missile Destroyer class. Interestingly, although the County-class are sometimes referred to as English counties, Berwick (now abolished) was a Scottish County at the time – although Berwick-upon-Tweed – the former county town upon which HMS Berwick had close affiliations, was in the English county of Northumberland 3 miles south! [something to do with the English and Scots always fighting [:D]]

So on that basis using some of these fine names would also make sense:

6. Antrim (County in which Belfast is situated and was an armoured cruiser in WWI)
7. Glamorgan (County in which Cardiff is situated and, as far as I can see, not used before)
8. Fife (Home county of the naval base of Rosyth and as far as I can see not used before)

Finally here is a Scottish county – not used with the County-class Guided Missile Destroyer class but has a very fine name:

9. Argyll (previously an armoured cruiser in WWI)

If you are going for 5 here would be my choice:

1. Antrim (Belfast connection)
2. Fife (Rosyth connection)
3. Glamorgan (Cardiff connection)
4. Hampshire (Portsmouth connection)
5. Northumberland (the name sounds right)

Now Maitland, now's your time!

There were a series of designs for 9.2" and 8" cruisers in 1939/40. IIRC Churchill favoured 9.2" due to their good performance in the Great War, but there had been little to no development since, so 8" was a more practical design. These actually got far enough for names to be reserved for proposed orders in the 1940 Supplementary Programme that then repeatedly slipped until cancelled in 1943.

The 9.2" would have been 22.5Ktons, 3x3 9.2"
The 8" would have been 15.5Ktons (growing to 17.5Ktons), 3x3 8", 8x2 4" or 4.5" (4 turrets on each beam). Admiral class, names Blake, Benbow, Effingham and Hawke.

Take a look at http://warships1discussionboards.yuku.c ... g5vVvS8CS4, but the Warship Projects board discussion (linked to in the Warships1 thread) is much more comprehensive IIRC.

I'm confused. I thought you specifically wanted detail on the 9.2-inch + ships (which I have given)?

If its the 8-inch and 6-inch, designs and thoughts (but not built) then that's much easier to find.

Warspite you are correct. I wanted info on 9.2 in gun cruisers. The website I posted had 9.2 in plans and 8 in plans on it. Well I hope that's the one I posted.

The 1939/40 9.2" and 8" designs are completely intertwined, they're basically two different design proposals for the same requirement, a heavy cruiser without any treaty limits.
