[solved, normal behavior] numerous "stopped working" editor

Post by Rongor »

While playing around with the editor, doing steps by the book while studying the editor manual, I got multiple occasions of freezes, mostly including the "has stopped working" Windows messages.
Seems to happen at random. Had it after keystrokes but also mouse clicks. Can't reproduce it with a specific action. Always happened within my first 20-30 minutes or so after starting the editor.

Also a blacked out screen occured in the map editor while being in the hex control defining mode when I accidently pressed the key "d". This time, the screen just went black, the Windows bar on top of the window still is active and this time not displaying the "has stopped" message... With further random key inputs I managed to return to normal editor display and could continue normal use.

16 GB RAM, 2 GB VRAM...

Are you running latest version (1.01.01)? Are you using some modified scenario file or work with the stock files?
Also a blacked out screen occured in the map editor while being in the hex control defining mode when I accidently pressed the key "d".

"d" calls for the air doctrine screen. Is it repeatable?

The one that is repeatable is when I try to assign a TOE to a new made unit. I loaded the Op Dragoon mission into the editor to use the content of this scenario as templates for my own scenario unit build up. So I for example copied a FF HQ Corps TOE to an empty slot where I then edit the nationality to VF. Then I created a new VF HQ unit. Upon assigning the VF HQ TOE to that VF HQ unit, the editor stops working in the described manner.

The black screen in editor map mode (not the map editor) with the D hotkey didn't happen again when testing a minute
ago.

It is 1.01.01 in the top. (Torch was installed on release day)

could it be that erratic issues might appear because I am trying to sell a Western Allies Vichy France faction to the editor?

Some nations are coded as inactive, so yes, it might cause an issue.

As I can see VF is active nations, but it is treated as neutral, so it may cause crashes.

Well from the look of the editor, it appeared I was free to set any nation into the Axis or the W.Allies faction as desired. Can you confirm this being hardcoded?

I set my units to player W.Allies and nation VF. So far the editor lets me do this and there is no indication this shouldn't be done as long as my odd problems aren't a hint pointing on that.

So I guess both France and Vichy France are hardcoded into the Axis then?
Are there any other hardcoded limitations we could run into?

Would it be possible to put Switzerland into the Allies faction and make a scenario of Operation Tannenbaum, the German invasion of Switzerland?

They are not assigned to any player side, which is even worse when trying to hook them in editor.

Very much depends what you are trying to do.
Would it be possible to put Switzerland into the Allies faction and make a scenario of Operation Tannenbaum, the German invasion of Switzerland?

Technically it is possible, but since nation to player mapping is one of the core function, it is very risky and may cause all kind of issues.

I am afraid I am totally unaware of the risks. Frankly I have no idea how all this works. Obviously it is not as simple as offered by the editor. Some more elaborated guidelines about what is not to be touched might be helpfull here.
We can assume I inflicted the issues of this thread by myself while doing something I shouldn't have done. The only issue I have with the situation right now, is that the editor actually lets me do stuff which causes errors, due to some hardcoded limitations which are not really documented and therefore remain hidden for the ambitious user who runs into problems while using the editor to create some creative content.

It is great we got a nice intuitive editor. Even more it would be nice to know how far we are allowed to aim with it, as running into some hardcoded limitations is no fun when riding on that ambitious creativity train [;)]

Yes, it does. General rule of thumb is try to follow basic framework of existing scenarios. i.e. you can change units, air groups, leader, national settings, ground elements, weapons. But changing geography (cities, map), time frame, opposing sides, etc is prohibited.

I suggest you to start your own thread on scenario sub-forum with your design ideas. I'm sure you will get full support from our data guys.

Wilco! Gotta regroup my ideas first, and also study the Torch features for a while.

Thanks a lot!
